Abstract

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the household waste sector in Medan City show an increasing trend and are an important contributor to the city's total emissions, in line with the national increase. This problem is not only caused by limited infrastructure but is more influenced by people's behavior in waste management, as explained in the framework of Lawrence Green's theory (Precede-Proceed Model), which includes predisposition, enabling, and reinforcing factors. This study aims to analyze the relationship between knowledge, attitudes, availability of facilities, availability of waste bins, and willingness to sort waste with GHG mitigation in the waste sector. The method used was a quantitative survey with a cross-sectional design of 270 households in Medan City using the two-stage cluster sampling technique. Data was collected through interview questionnaires and analyzed categorically based on median, then tested using Chi-square (α=0.05). The results showed that knowledge, attitude, and willingness to sort waste had a significant relationship with GHG mitigation behavior (PR 4.84–4.95; p=0.0001). On the other hand, the availability of facilities and garbage cans was not significantly related (p>0.05). These findings confirm the dominance of psychosocial factors over physical means factors. In conclusion, efforts to mitigate GHG in the waste sector need to be focused on increasing knowledge, forming positive attitudes, and encouraging waste sorting behavior.

Abstract

Scabies is a skin infection caused by tiny mites that burrow into the skin, resulting in intense itching and rashes. This issue is common in developing countries and significantly contributes to skin disorders. Islamic boarding schools (pondok pesantren) are among the locations where scabies outbreaks occur, and various factors influence their incidence. This study aims to identify the factors associated with the occurrence of scabies among students at Al-Khairaat Islamic Boarding School in Tideng Pale Village, Tana Tidung District, in 2025. This research employs a quantitative analytical observational approach with a cross-sectional design. Data are analyzed univariately and followed by bivariate analysis using the chi-square test to identify significant relationships. The results indicate that the variable of clothing hygiene (p = 0.046; OR = 4.000) has a significant association with the incidence of scabies. On the other hand, knowledge (p = 1.000; OR = 1.031), housing density (p = 0.616; OR = 0.654), bed hygiene (p = 0.593; OR = 1.684), towel hygiene (p = 0.375; OR = 1.860), and bathing hygiene (p = 0.587; OR = 1.643) were not significantly associated with scabies incidence. The incidence of scabies at Al-Khairaat Islamic Boarding School is associated with clothing hygiene. Therefore, efforts to improve personal and environmental hygiene through education, sanitation facility improvements, and collaboration between the boarding school, community health centers, and the Health Office are essential to prevent and control scabies sustainably.

Abstract

Indoor air quality in office buildings plays a crucial role in human life as it directly impacts the health and productivity of building occupants. This study aims to assess indoor air quality and compare it with Ministry of Health Regulation No. 48 of 2016, examine the relationship between temperature and humidity on indoor air pollutants, and map the distribution of CO, CO2, PM10, and VOC concentrations in staff rooms. The analytical methods used include descriptive analysis, quantitative analysis using the Spearman correlation test, and spatial analysis using Surfer 16. The results of the study indicate that several parameters, such as temperature, humidity, light intensity, CO₂, and PM10, do not meet quality standards at most points. However, for CO and VOCs, concentrations were found to be significantly below quality standards. The Spearman correlation test showed a significant relationship between temperature and VOCs with a p-value of 0.021<0.05 and a correlation coefficient of -0.467, indicating a negative relationship with a moderate level of strength. The distribution mapping results are shown in red for areas with high concentrations or those not meet quality standards, while green indicates areas with concentrations below quality standards. This is an important step in evaluating and developing ventilation and lighting systems, as well as maintaining indoor air quality in accordance with established standards.

Abstract

Disinfection is a method aimed at reducing or killing harmful microorganisms on certain surfaces or objects to minimize the potential spread of infections and diseases. This study used a quasi-experimental design to evaluate the effectiveness of cocoa husk extract (Theobroma cacao, L.) as a disinfectant in reducing the total microbial count on eating utensils. The research design was implemented using a pretest and posttest method without a control group. After treatment with the cocoa husk extract disinfectant on plates, the total microbial count was measured at concentration variations of 25%, 50%, and 75%. The average microbial reduction recorded was 2.07 colonies/cm² at 25% concentration, 2.2 colonies/cm² at 50% concentration, and 2.3 colonies/cm² at 75% concentration. Plates in the cafeteria of PT. X showed the highest microbial reduction at the 75% concentration. However, this study did not determine specific types of microorganisms, such as Salmonella spp. or other harmful bacteria. Furthermore, the extraction process was not followed by purification and quantitative analysis of bioactive compounds. Therefore, future researchers are recommended to conduct extract purification and active factor analysis to identify the compounds most responsible for antibacterial activity and to establish the most effective concentration.

Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes remains a significant health issue in Indonesia. While synthetic repellents such as DEET are effective, they carry risks of skin irritation and environmental impact. Essential oil from cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmannii), containing compounds like cinnamaldehyde and eugenol, shows potential as a safer natural repellent. This study aimed to investigate the effect of varying concentrations of cinnamon essential oil spray on the repellent efficacy against Aedes aegypti mosquitoes and to determine the concentration most effective at repelling mosquitoes. An experimental post-test only control group design was employed, using three spray concentrations (5%, 10%, 15%) with six repetitions per group. The repellent data obtained were tested for normality and homogeneity and then analyzed using one-way ANOVA, followed by Tukey HSD post hoc test. The average mosquito repellent efficacy observed was 62% at a 5% concentration, 70% at 10%, and 85% at 15%. One-way ANOVA results indicated significant differences among the three concentrations (p < 0.001). Tukey HSD further confirmed that the 15% concentration had a significantly higher efficacy compared to the other two concentrations. However, this concentration also produced a stronger and longer-lasting heat sensation on the skin, making it less comfortable for users.

Abstract

Hospitals are environments that have the potential to experience indoor air pollution. RSUD X Samarinda is a type C hospital in Samarinda that provides emergency, outpatient, and inpatient services. The inpatient room is a place for patients who are recovering and is often a place of interaction between patients, medical staff, non-medical staff, and visitors. Thus, sanitation in the treatment room is important to note. The method used is the quantitative method with a descriptive design. The measurement results show that the temperature and humidity in all inpatient rooms have abnormal temperature, pressure, and humidity levels. The measurement results of PM2.5 concentration in accordance with the standard in TB isolation room 1 amounted to 0.25 µg/m3, and isolation room/HCU with a concentration of 0.24 µg/m3. And the results of measuring PM10 concentrations in inpatient rooms are all in accordance with hospital environmental health quality standards. The quality standard used is the Regulation of the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia Number 2 of 2023 concerning the Implementation Regulation of Government Regulation Number 66 of 2014 concerning Environmental Health. have a large proportion to highlight the interest of your research.

Abstract

Eating utensils contaminated with microorganisms can transmit foodborne diseases. Swab results from tablespoons in the Food Court of PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital showed Escherichia coli contamination of 20 CFU/cm², which did not meet the quality standards. The disinfection stage in the utensil-washing process is rarely practiced due to limited facilities. This study utilized Eco-enzyme, a fermentation product of vegetable and/or fruit waste, as a natural disinfectant. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of Eco-enzyme in reducing E. coli counts on tablespoons. This research was a True Experimental study using a Randomized Pretest–Posttest Multiple Treatment Design with 3 treatments: dishwashing soap (1:25 mL), Eco-enzyme (1:10 mL), and a combination of dishwashing soap and Eco-enzyme (1:1:10 mL). Each treatment was applied to 6 tenants, resulting in 18 spoon samples. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test followed by a Kruskal–Wallis and post-hoc Pairwise Comparisons. The Wilcoxon test showed significant differences in E. coli counts before and after treatments (p < 0.05). Post-hoc analysis demonstrated that the Eco-enzyme treatment reduced E. coli more effectively than dishwashing soap (p = 0.008), and the combination treatment was also more effective than dishwashing soap (p = 0.036). No significant difference was found between Eco-enzyme and the combination treatment (p = 1.00). In conclusion, both Eco-enzyme and its combination with dishwashing soap effectively reduced E. coli on tablespoons. Future studies may explore various formulations and concentrations of Eco-enzymes for disinfecting other food utensils.

Abstract

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO₂), which reflects the effectiveness of ventilation systems. Elevated levels of CO₂ are often associated with the occurrence of Sick Building Syndrome (SBS), a collection of symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, eye irritation, and concentration problems experienced by building occupants. This study is a structured literature review conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines for reporting the process of article identification and selection.The keywords used were “carbon dioxide,” “indoor air quality,” “sick building syndrome,” and “office workers.” From the eight studies reviewed, five (62,5%) reported a significant association between elevated CO₂ concentrations and the incidence of Sick Building Syndrome, while three (37,5%) found no statistically significant relationship. Most studies indicated that CO₂ concentrations exceeding 1000 ppm were correlated with an increase in SBS symptoms, particularly headaches, fatigue, and respiratory irritation. Other factors such as temperature, humidity, and ventilation effectiveness were also found to influence the relationship. Most studies indicate an association between increased CO₂ concentrations and the occurrence of Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) symptoms, although results across studies still show some variation. Monitoring CO₂ levels can serve as an indicator of indoor air quality and as an early preventive measure against SBS. Improved ventilation management and air quality control policies are essential to create healthier and more productive indoor working environments.

Abstract

Indoor environments should protect occupants from unwanted pollutants and hazards; however, indoor pollutant concentrations are often higher than those outdoors. Indoor bioaerosols pose a risk factor for clinical conditions such as asthma, irritation, allergies, and respiratory disorders. The growth of airborne pathogenic microbes can be inhibited using extracts of snake plant (Sansevieria sp.) and citronella grass (Cymbopogon nardus), which contain citronellal, nerol, phenolics, triterpenoids, alkaloids, and tannins as antibacterial compounds. This study aimed to determine the difference in mean total airborne microbial counts following the application of a single extract of 70% ethanol Sansevieria sp. 30% and a combined extract of 70% ethanol Sansevieria sp. 30% + Cymbopogon nardus 10% using a humidifier. A Posttest Only Control Group Design was employed in a 100 m³ miniature room using 81 petri dishes as air sampling media. The mean total microbial count for the single extract was 161.1 CFU/m³ (62 % reduction), while the combined extract yielded 54.2 CFU/m³ (88 % reduction). An Independent T-test revealed a significant difference between the single Sansevieria sp. extract and the combined Sansevieria sp. and Cymbopogon nardus extract (p-value < 0.001). The combined extract of Sansevieria sp. and Cymbopogon nardus was proven to be more effective in reducing total airborne microbial counts compared to the single extract.

Abstract

Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) is a health complaint that arises when a person works in a building. When he left the building, the complaint disappeared. SBS complaints often result from environmental conditions in the building (physical, chemical, biological, and psychological factors) that are not adequately controlled and can cause financial losses. The purpose of the study was to analyze factors related to SBS complaints in Management Section Employees at Bhayangkara Anton Soedjarwo Pontianak Hospital. The type of research is observational analytics with a quantitative approach and a cross-sectional research design. The research population comprised all employees of the Management Section at Bhayangkara Anton Soedjarwo Hospital, Pontianak, totaling 62 employees, and the research sample comprised 54 people. The techniques and procedures for data collection are through physical environment measurement and filling out questionnaires. Data analysis was carried out univariately, namely, bivariate analysis using the chi-square test and multivariate analysis using logistic regression. The results of the chi-square analysis showed that there was a significant relationship between individual characteristic factors (gender) and work environment factors (temperature, humidity, lighting), and SBS complaints. The results of the analysis showed that the lighting variable had a high risk. In conclusion, there is a relationship between gender, temperature, and lighting with SBS complaints in Management Section Employees at Bhayangkara Anton Soedjarwo Pontianak Hospital, and the strongest relationship with SBS complaints is the gender variable.
