Abstract

Leadership has an expansive meaning because it is a field study that comprises several different dimensions such as psychology, management, organization, and politics. On the other hand, the study of leadership’s role on urban development issues is still relatively scarce, especially in developing countries. The literature shows that local governments under the mayor as the highest-ranking position of municipal prioritise urban development is very much a function of socio-cultural norms and leadership styles. Therefore, mayoral leadership is vital regarding local government interventions to promote urban beautification in Indonesia. It is undeniable that leadership is a significant aspect of urban governance. Taking a case study in Surabaya, evidence shows that leadership plays important roles in urban governance, especially in facilitating and advising processes. Drawing on analysis of relevant documents, literature, and interviews with key decision-makers in Surabaya, the findings indicate that the quality of mayoral leadership has played a vital role in enhancing the beautification of urban form in Surabaya as a result of the urban design process. The mechanisms underlying this role include that the mayor has a sound understanding of the urban design and has been able to intervene to insist on good urban design as policy and has the standing to approach officials and community members on the urban beautification process. The quality of mayoral leadership has played a vital role in shaping the better urban beautification of Surabaya. A Mayor who has a wide-ranging grasp of urban design has advantages for the local government.

Abstract

Indonesia is prone to natural disasters that can occur unexpectedly and gradually. Natural disasters implement surprising impacts due to a lack of awareness and preparedness in facing the threats. One of the reasons caused by such a disaster that can be seen is through human behaviour. Human behaviour is challenging to predict in an emergency, stressful and chaotic. Spontaneous behaviour is distinguished by location factors, indoor or outdoor, with indoor, divided by Home and Public Building. This research aims to reveal spontaneous human behaviour during natural disasters while inside and outside the building. This research was conducted with a qualitative exploratory method. Data were collected using an online questionnaire with open-ended questions and distributed freely. The findings show tendencies to withstand when in the public building while going to distance themselves from building while at home, as for those outdoor opt to surrender as not to do anything

Abstract

This study aims to describe the influence of the Malay culture and customs on the Malaysian peninsula on the architectural forms of houses and mosques. The discussion is carried out on architectural elements with the object of discussion of houses and mosques. The traditional Malay house has a house topology on stilts with high poles, a layered roof, the primary material with wooden structures, and many openings (ventilations) that illustrate adaptation to the tropical climate. The type of house is determined by its roof shape, namely Bumbung Panjang, Bumbung Limas, Bumbung Perak, and Bumbung Perak Bumbung Limas. On the other hand, a mosque is a very important building for the Malay community because it is a space for congregational prayer and a formal education/teaching center for religious education, and an administrative center for communities. The overall impression of the mosque is described as a building with a flat hypostyle roof. This typology follows a religious concept of Malaysian people regarding many aspects of design on the holiness of mosques designed to develop seven architectural elements

Abstract

Spatial invasion is a subjective expression of low-income communities in the riverbank areas. This lifestyle is one of the expressions of society to meet the lack of spatial space in residential areas, especially in riverbank areas. The previous study stated several things, the invasion of the lifestyle of the riverside community has occurred especially when the settlements were divided spatially. Besides, the precedent for the rusunawa in Surabaya shows its design by providing spaces that connected spaces, units, and buildings, which are usually invaded by the inhabitants for domestic and social activities. Qualitative studies were obtained to find the configuration of spatial invasion through activity observations and in-depth interviews with several participants living in riverbank settlements. This study analyses whether the use of space in the flat can be designed under similar activities and the use of spatial intervention in the kampung settlement, in this context near the river border. The results showed that there were similarities in the use of public spaces in residential areas and rusunawa, namely eventual space invasion that is used as the design concept. Shared space for community activities in the settlements can be adopted and provided in flat design with the support of several architectural elements. These expressions are then simulated into several concept illustrations of a flat design proposal with several required conditions. The result proposes several potentials of space in the flat that can be used for domestic and social interests.

Abstract

Competitions are a significant means of focusing on specific spaces in cities and forming public opinion. Competitions result in many professionals such as architectures, urban planners, urban designers, landscape architects, civil engineers, etc. proposing lots of designs for the same space, and thereby submitting various solution offers for it. Therefore, competitions are important not only for their results, but also for increasing knowledge about the occupational groups of design and the shaping of urban open spaces and built environments, in other words, cities. This study analyzes competitions’ contributions to urban design based on the experience of Merzifon Municipality’s Business and Life Center Architectural Project Competition. The discipline of urban design, which plays an important role in forming the urban open spaces and built environments, is enriched by competitions. The approaches developed in the projects that compete for the urban spaces focused on the competitions play an important role in shaping cities.

Abstract

A slum settlement constitutes a residential environmental condition with a quality far below the occupancy worthiness standard. Slum neighborhoods are characterized by high building density, low environmental quality, poor infrastructure, and social problems that occur. One area in Denpasar City that belongs to slum settlement is Wanasari subvillage, Dauh Puri Kaja, North Denpasar. Kampung Jawa settlement area is divided into 9 RT (Neighborhood Associations). This area is not fully qualified for a slum, which can be divided into typologies of mild slum, moderate slum, and heavy slum levels. In general, each RT's physical conditions have various characteristics. This study was at least to analyze the characteristics of each typology group of slums. The research method used was mixed methods, in which the research stages were started by identifying the characteristics of the slum settlements in each RT area having been categorized according to the existing slum levels. The process of classifying these categories was carried out by observing and identifying slum settlements by looking at the physical aspects of the environment, the socio-economic conditions of the community, environmental facilities and infrastructure, and the environmental hazard conditions. The results of the study obtained indicate that the basic factors influencing the characteristics of Kampung Jawa settlement are the level of education, the type of occupation, the level of the economy, and the locations of the RT. The lower the factors that are owned, the lower the quality of the physical environment, infrastructure, and the level of hazard formed in the area of Kampung Jawa settlement. Keywords: slum settlement, characteristic identification, Kampung Jawa.

Abstract

Indonesia is a super cultural power country, rich in customs and culture line from Sabang to Merauke, from Nias to Rote Island. Cultural wealth breeds architectural diversity. The potential of original Indonesian architecture has begun to be left behind and eroded by foreign cultures. The postmodern era has raised Nusantara Architecture to the world stage. Researches on the wealth of Nusantara architecture begin to bloom like mushrooms in the rainy season. The phenomenon of the skills or expertise of the masters has made traditional houses an endless research material. The purpose of this research is to explore the treasures of the Indonesian nation's wealth, especially the craftsmanship skills of Indonesian ancestors. The phenomenon of tying, knitting, and stringing materials into architectural masterpieces is a uniqueness and uniqueness that other nations do not have. The method used in this study uses the phenomenological method. Where in the vernacular architectural phenomenology is divided into two branches; first: related to space, place, and atmosphere, second: related to tectonic or the art of construction more on the elements of craftsmanship. The results of this study reveal that simple and straightforward technology becomes effective when it comes to craftsmen who have special skills. The conclusions of this study indicate that the skill of the masons is more dominant than the tools used, on the other hand, currently tools are more dominant than the skills of the masons.
