Abstract

Discourse of women's leadership is never-ending to discuss. Some Islamic theo-logical considerations has always been a major reason to support equality bet-ween men and women. This article presents the textual and contextual analysis of the leadership of women in the public sphere. It is based on textual under-standing of the Sunnah of the Prophet and the opinion of the majority of Muslim scholars poorly stated that the leadership of women in public affairs is prohi-bited, but is based on a contextual understanding is not the case with the proviso able to carry out the mandate. Islamic history records ‘Â`isyah, al-Syifâ, and Queen Balqis including a handful of women leaders who occupy public office. Therefore, in the understanding of women's leadership issues, contextual under-standing must first be considered.Copyright (c) 2015 by KARSA. All right reservedDOI: 10.19105/karsa.v23i1.615

Abstract

Pesantren and its social religious teaching is a complex and challenged issue. This paper analyzed with the historical-critical approach and reflective logic was aimed to claim that pesantren should behave wisely and carefully to confront extremely purification movement and globalization symptom. To purify Islam leads to the failure to understand and identify Islamic power to discuss creatively with local wisdom. Whereas, with the global growth and modern culture, some pesantrens show an ambiguity and unclear direction and the goal in modernizing pesantren. Pesantren has missed its ability to define and place its position amid global reality at the intersection of maintaining the tradition and adopting the new development. For that, with the strong of pesantren cultural tradition, pesantren must be able to make continuity and change to bind local, national, and global values. In other words, the future of pesantren is determined by an education model which relates pesantren cultural values, nationality, and global human issues.Copyright (c) 2015 by KARSA. Abstract

This article describes the background of the rise of an Indonesian moderate Islamic understanding in the midst of a trans-national Islamic movement with the scriptural-puritanical in it’s character which spread out pervasively in the country; and this new Islamic model is intolerant to local traditions.  Meanwhile, historically, Islam Nusantara has been deeply rooted among the Moslems in archipelago, and this traditional-moderate Islam has been developed by Wali-songo. Islam Nusantara is accommodative to the local cultures and traditions. It produces a moderate and tolerant model of Islam. This article also describes the role of pesantren in protecting the heritages of Islam Nusantara. Copyright (c) 2015 by KARSA. All right reservedDOI: 10.19105/karsa.v23i2.718

Abstract

Pesantren is an institution for learning, moral formation, and missionary endea-vor. In Madura, pesantren and kiai are essential elements that could not be separated from the life of the Madurese. Both have become the lifeblood of the Madurese. Being a kiai has its own image in Madura. A kiai is often considered a sacred figure who is always enlightening, who has words and behavior that deserves to be emulated. Inevitably, in Madura they have a lot of mass and followers, which in turn the realms of belief in kiai switch from that of the religious to political nuances in nature. This paper examines how the function of pesantren as a center for religious studies has shifted: from the role of pesantren which is religious nuances to that of more political nuances. From the sample of pesantren in Madura, precisely in three districts (Bangkalan, Pamekasan, and Sumenep) the study found various responses of the function shift of pesantren. In general, although there are some who question kiai involvement in the political sphere, the vast majority of the community supports kiai’s involvement in politics. This fact can be understood because Madurese still position kiai as a major figure and model, thus the involvement of kiai in politics is expected to change the negative image of politics.Copyright (c) 2015 by KARSA. Abstract

This article tries to describe government policies toward pesantren, as the Islamic intistitution, which has been existing from the early  Independence of Indonesia period to present times, and its implications on the progresses of pesantren. This study uses library research on related documents of government policies and the result shows that the government policies tend to indicate to be a positive development. In the beginning of old and new orders, government policies were simply in form of unofficial claim above the role of pesantren in accelerating the nation intelligence. Since the release of decree of UU No. 2/1989 pesantren has been approved and legitimated as the subsystem of national education, though, pesantren keeps and maintains its characterisitc. As UU  No. 20/2003 legitimated and followed by relating policies –especilally PP No. 55/1997, PMA No. 13/2014, and PMA No. 18/2014 – pesantren has been totally awarded as part of national educational system, in turn, such of the institution has more freedom in portraying Islamic values by enhancing its characteristic as the institution focusing on tafaqquh fî al-dîn (an attempt to a totally Islamic understandings) and developing the other competences based on the characteristic of each pesantren.Copyright (c) 2015 by KARSA. Abstract

In the world of science, the institutions of education have become the foundation of educators to teach science for the next generation. Pesantren (Islamic boarding school) is the oldest traditional educational institutions, which still exists in Indonesia until now. It is in this institution in which islamic scholars transform Islamic knowledge to society. Globalization has influenced the world of edu-cation, wherever it comes from, including pesantren. This paper discusses the role of boarding schools in educating students so that they not only able to face the challenges of globalization, but also guard their identity as islamic students (santri), in three main discussion: first, how the existence, essence and role of the boarding school in facing the changing times are; second, how the boarding schools face the future; and third, as an example, how pesantren of Tanwirul Hija in Sumenep, Madura changes to face the challenges of globalization. This study concludes that in order to deal with global challenges, pesantren has been continually maintaining the essence of the islamic boarding school, while at the same time appreciating the new educational methods that lead to the inclu-siveness and gender awareness. By standing on two feet, the boarding schools, including Tanwirul Hija, not only exists but also will be able to create new cadres who are ready to compete with other competitors from any different institutions, both in the islamic knowledge and general sciences. In short, reforms in all areas of pesantren, which is the focus of this paper, are absolutely done.Copyright (c) 2015 by KARSA. All right reservedDOI: 10.19105/karsa.v23i2.725

Abstract

The existence of Islamic boarding school (pesantren) as an educational in-stitution has a major influence on the life of community, in cultural, educational, and social aspect. Pesantren has become a center of excellence for the development of human resources that has a base of morality in social life. Based on these considerations, pesantren should position itself as a service industry, which provides services according to the desire of customers. To achieve this, schools can adapt the Total Quality Mana-gement (TQM). TQM emphasizes the personal, ethical, cultural, and system quality that are directed to ensure the commitment of every mem-ber of pesantren in continuously quality improvement efforts. It is required that pesantren affirms itself as an educational institution in which construc-tive ideas constantly arise from to frame the pesantren management for the improvement of education quality. Pesantren needs to make strategic efforts to develop the quality design of education. In so doing, it is required to improve various aspects with regard to educational processes in pesantren, namely leadership, curriculum, learning processes, service orientation, and evaluation. This improvement should be done simul-taneously and consistently, resulting in a boarding school education quality design that can accommodate the needs of students and community.Copyright (c) 2015 by KARSA. Abstract

This research describes the communication process among members of Islamic Boarding School such as kiai, ustadz, and santri. Islamic Boarding School is a kind of spesific subculture with a different set of values compared to dominant culture in the community. Those values form a homogeneous behavior and attitude among the members of the Islamic Boarding School. These results indicate that the tradition of communication in Islamic Boarding School are represented through the communication process between kiai, ustadz, and santri  which happened in such tradition as ‘sowan’, communication model ‘klasikal’, communication model ‘bandongan’, communication model ‘wetonan’, commu-nication model ‘sorogan’, communication model ‘musyâwarah’, and com-munication using symbols like “bell ring sound” and calls. Values acculturation and culture “santri” could emerge as a result of the ‘intra-cultural’ com-munication process in Islamic Boarding School. Because of that homogeneous subcultures, the communication process in the Islamic Boarding School empha-sizes on the process of ‘intra-cultural’ communication.Copyright (c) 2015 by KARSA. Abstract

The construction of theological thought of Islamic scholars about disaster in East Java is based on the dialogue process which is based on the text (the doctrine of theology) and context (a variety of catastrophic events). The scholar thought dia-lectically involves three momentums at once, the moment of internalization, ex-ternalization, and objectification. This cycle can be seen from the understanding of the resource person which is based on the doctrine of theology and catas-trophic events. The dialectics of text and context eventually lead to the concerns of the scholars. This study concludes that in the view of the primary sources, the disaster is interpreted in three categories, namely as mushîbah (trials), imtihân (warning/test), and 'adzab (torture) of God as prime cause for humanity in hablun min Allah (relationship/worship with Allah), hablun min al al-nâs (relation-ship/interact with human), and hablun min al-'âlam (relationship/maintain with universe). Generally, this theological view can not be separated from mainstream theology, the theology of the Ash'arite which is the mainstream ideology of Ahlussunnah wal Jama'ah followers. Polarization of views and interpretations of the Islamic scholars in East Java in Berger’s constructivism theory gives rise typology of scholar thought; conservative, moderate and progressive thought.Copyright (c) 2015 by KARSA.
