Abstract

Parity gives an indication of physical maturity of cows. Physical maturity state of primiparous was 82 – 90% while that for pluriparous was 100%. In postpartum period, cows have a negative energy balance. Cows experiencing this condition will use the deposit glycogen in their liver and lipids in adipose tissue to be metabolized by liver become glucose. This experiment aimed at studying blood glucose at different parities of post-partum Fries Holland dairy cows. One-way classification design was use to observe 90 heads of post-partum dairy cows (30 heads of cows each in the first, the second and the third parity state. Data were analyze with General Linear Model (GLM) and the significant difference data among blood glucoses of the cows further analyzed with Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT). The results of the study showed that there was a significant (P<0.05) difference between blood glucose of the first parity state of cows (51. 57±5. 56 mg/dL) compared to that of the second (45. 57±8.01 mg/dL ) and the third (46.7±8.62 mg/dL ) cows. This was due to cows in the first parity is in growing state than in producing milk and reproduction function. Cows in the second and the third parities are in opposite function. Blood glucose profile at different parities of post-partum Fries Holland dairy cows was in the normal range (35-55 mg/dL). Blood glucose of the first parity of cows was higher (51.57±5.56 mg/dL) compared to that in the second (45.57±8.01 mg/dL) and the third cows (46.7±8.62 mg/dL). Abstract

An experiment was conducted to study the effect of nimba leaf extract on flies’ (Stomoxys calsitrans) population on animal house. The results were expected to be scientific basic information in developing traditional herbal medicine to control the population of fly that usually be a vector in transferring several diseases on cattle. Extract procedure refers to method developed by Kardiman (1999), the production of pesticide for crops and vegetables using spraying method. Cattle on animal house of Kupang State of Agriculture Polytechnic were arranged into three group of three. Each group of cattle, replicated three times, was sprayed with 50, 75 or 100% of nimba leaf extract. Flies’ condition and their behaviour were observed for about 3 hours. The results  showed that the aplication of nimba leaf extract at concentration of 50% and 75% has no effect on flies’ activities to alight on and to suck the blood of the cattle. After 2.5 hour spraying of 100% extract, it was observed that some flies were less active, some flies almost could not fly, and the behaviour of flies change from gather together to spread out along the skin of the cattle and finally flew away from the cattle. Abstract

Study the marketing efficiency of beef cattle trade was conducted in Kupang Regency. This study was carried out by survey method in four villages of two districts. Sixty farmer’s were sampled using simple random sampling method. Six cattle middle traders and four inter-island cattle traders were sampled with a snowball sampling method. Marketing efficiency was analyzed based on data through a market structure, conduct, and performance approach. Result showed that the market structure of beef cattle in Kupang Regency was an imperfect competition in which the price change was higher at the inter island cattle traders level than at the cattlemen level. The price share and the market margin received by the farmer’s were 60.37% and 39.62% of the price paid by the inter island traders, respectively. Therefore, the profit distribution for the middlemen and for the inter island traders were calculated to be 81.07% and 29.01%, respectively. Therefore, it is recommended that the cattlemen should be informed about the importance of forming or supporting a village cooperation unit enterprise such and the importance of forming a cattlemen group in the beef cattle marketing system as efforts to improve the farmer’s bargaining position. Keywords: Beef cattle, marketing efficiency

Abstract

Soil is growing media for plant growth. It preserves water and nutrients for plants. The physical  changes in soil affect the life of roots and plant performances. The goal of  research  was to  change physical condition in soil through mulching for increasing pepper plant production. Land for pepper cultivation was mulched using rice straws and plastic sheet (PE). Physical condition such as soil suhue and humidity and content of organic matters in the soil were measured or examined. Also, production components such as plant height and stalk diameter were measured as well as fruit production. The result showed that mulching increased significantly soil suhue and humidity as well as content of organic matters in the soil. Mulching increased plat height, diameter of stalk, and fruit production, especially in using  rice straws Therefore, mulching have  a role in increasing growth and production pepper fruit  through modification of physical condition in soil. Keywords :  mulching, growth, production, pepper

Abstract

A study was conducted to evaluate nutrient composition and in-vitro digestibility of organic matter of native grass hay usually used to feed Bali cattle in the Quarantine of Tenau Kupang and cattle during shipping. Method use were sampling the hay grass from five piles of grasses, identifying the species, analyzing nutrient composition and examining in-vitro digestibility of organic matter. Results of the study showed that the dominant hay grasses in Quarantine were native grass and kume grass (Sorghum plumosum var. timorense). Nutrient content of the native grass are dry matter (92.21%), ash (3.85%) and crude protein (5.01%). These numbers are higher than numbers in kume grass but organic matter and neutral detergent fiber. The in-vitro digestibility of organic matter was higher in native grass (48.01%) than that in kume grass (40.81%). It was concluded that hay grass used to feed cattle in the Quarantine and cattle during shipping are dominated by native grass and kume grass. Nutrient composition especially dry matter, ash and crude protein in native grass are higher than numbers in kume grass but organic matter and neutral detergent fiber. Consequently, in-vitro digestibility of native grass is higher than that in kume grass.Key words: nutrient, in-vitro digestibility, hay grass, quarantine, shipping

Abstract

The effectiveness of Liquid Organic Fertilizer, Fermented from Cow’s Rumen, effected to onion’s Production. The objectives of this research were to determine: (1) an effectiveness of liquid organic fertilizer; (2) a dosage of liquid organic fertilizer; and (3) an efficiency of the application of liquid organic fertilizer fermented from cow rumen to increase onion’s harvest. This research used a Randomized Group Design with Factorial Pattern using 2 factors. Firstly, a dosage of liquid organic fertilizer fermented from cow rumen (P) that is using some levels:  0, 8, 16, 24, and 32 milliliter/liter clean water. Secondly, the way of fertilizer application (A): by showering to soil media, and by spraying to all of the onion leaves. Analyses of the onion components were made for onions diametric and the weight of dry and wet union. Analyses were made also for the fertilizer nutrition and for the nutrient-rich soil before and after onions were planted. All analyses were performed in duplicate and the data were calculated based on multivariate analyses and were continued to Duncan’s New Multiple Range Test (DMRT) 5%.The result showed that liquid organic fertilizer fermented from cow’s rumen increased onion productivities especially in onion weight (dry and wet matter) and onion diametric. The variation of liquid organic fertilizer dosages (8, 16, 24, and 32 milliliter/liter clean water) did not affect significantly to onion production. Moreover, fertilizer application by drenching to the soil more efficient than by spraying to the onion leaves. Keywords: Liquid Organic Fertilizer, Cow Rumen, Fermented, Onion
