Abstract

Terrorist organizations are now transforming into small cells and spreading their ideology to various parts of the world. The acts of terrorism in the Surabaya bomb case provide a new paradigm of the involvement of family members or an inner circle in their actions. The involvement of family members is considerably related to some psychological aspects. This study aims to provide a psychological analysis of suicide bombing terrors involving family members. The data obtained were analyzed using the perspective of Moghaddam’s theory, ‘staircases to terrorism’. The result indicates that the suicide bomber who has brought their family members in the action has gone through these six stages of psychological aspects: (1) Search for meaning. Actors seeking self and social meaning and finding reasons from the radical ideology adopted; (2) Presenting the ideology. The idea arises to fight those who are considered to do injustice, and the desire to change the system of government and politics is legitimate; (3) Cultivation stage. The process of ideology processing justification for resistance to those who are considered to be doing injustices; (4) Control over members. The stages of correct or wrong assessment based on the fatwa of the leader; (5) Moral engagement. The stage of identity confirmation and the process of polarization of groups of friends and opponents; (6) Recruitment, which is the stage of active involvement in acts of terrorism ranging from planning, targeting, techniques used, time and location of targets to implementing recruitment.

Abstract

The paper discusses the teachings of nationalism by KHR. Ahmad al-Hadi bin Dahlan al-Falaky in his poems. This research tried to explore aspects of local wisdom and accordingly to figure out the values of nationalism within the poems of a traditional Kiai living in the Balinese society where the majority were Hindu’s people. Data were primarily sourced and collected from “Kumpulan Sya’ir KHR. Ahmad al-Hadi bin Dahlan al-Falaky (1895-1976).”It uses discourse analysis to reveal the meaning of the poems. This finding shows that the poems firmly teach and emphasize the values of nationalism to society. In this regard, such values are vital to fostering the people’s nationalism for living side by side and in harmony with “the others” in the Balinese local context to the Indonesian national context and dealing with the challenging globalized ways of life.

Abstract

Currently the development of western science has been very advanced. However, the development of western science only concerns towards big profits without any consideration about the side effects of science development itself. The western science has marginalized the aspects of metaphysics and theology so that the western science arises materialistic characteristics for human beings, ecological damage, and disharmonic situations between nature and human. This writing discussed Ziauddin Sardar thoughts about Islamic science applying descriptive analysis approach. In Sardar’s thoughts, Muslim community must not follow western science; nevertheless, Muslim community may have Islamic science, having the Islamic characteristic and value. The characteristics of Islamic science cannot be separated from the ten parameters such as tawḥīd, khilāfah, ’ibādah, ’ilm, ḥalāl, ḥarām, ’adl, ẓulm, istiṣlāḥ and diyā’.

Abstract

War of opinions about the victims of Bali blast in public media was observed in two national newspaper, Republika and Kompas. Although the both newspapers are of national level, but in fact the request to be objective in informing opinions toward all community class and groups is some-thing difficult to achieve. This is based in the idea that every communication action contains any interrest—the more in mass media. In the side of Republika the execution of Amrozi seen as universal humanity problem, meanwhile for Kompas it only seen as local case that is related to the persons involved in the incident. Republika provides enough room for developing the discourse on jihad and terorism in order to build a counter opinion on the news that oftenly offense Amrozi meanwhil Kompas convines it self for not to involve in the discourse of theology.***Perang opini tentang korban ledakan Bali di media massa diamati di dua surat kabar nasional, yaitu Republika dan Kompas.

Abstract

Treasures of the Javanese Muslim clerics (Kiais) thought on nationalism contained in their books have made a valuable contribution in maintaining Indonesia as a unitary state. Their papers discuss not only religious issues but also the values of nationalism. This study is aimed at examining the linguistic dimensions, the praxis-discourse, and the socio-cultural-political aspects of their books. It incorporates both critical discourse analysis and content analysis. From the profound analysis, the study concludes that, first, the texts concerning nationalism in a number of the Kiais’ books can be seen through their linguistic dimension. These linguistic dimensions are partly found in the books written by Kiais from coastal areas. Second, at the level of praxis-discourse, those books are mostly written in Pegon script. The preservation of Arabic Pegon is meant not only to facilitate Javanese society in learning but also to indicate the Kiais' love of the local language, which is part of the national identity. Third, those books were mostly written during the struggle of the Indonesian people against the colonizers. While writing and teaching their religious texts, the pesantren Kiais instill values of the importance of loving and caring for the motherland.

Abstract

The variety of da‘wa (Islamic preaching) in Indonesia indicated not only the diversity in Islamic groups and identities, but also the varieties and changes in values and principles embraced by Indonesian Muslims. This paper argued that these da‘wa activities constitute searches of most suitable Indonesian Islamic principles that inevitably include the negotiation of Islamic, global, and local values. For this purpose, this paper showed examples of various international and Indonesian Islamic scholars and leaders who help change social, political, and religious rhetorical landscape through various arguments involving especially Islamic and modern-international values. This paper maintained that, in addition to Muslims exposure to modern global principles such as democracy and human rights, the increasing popularity and resilience of local-traditional rituals, performances, and expressions in Indonesian da‘wa have significantly shaped the search of the Indonesian Islamic noble values.
