Abstract

The aim of this study was to elaborate on how religious education can be implemented to community life as the reference and norm of behavior in their life. Religious education developed in legal order remained to be needed inexplicitly. There is a tendency that the community wanted to organize their life corresponding to the religion. For making the religion to be alive, the state’s leadership and participation is needed to regulate it. The constructed religion value in community behavior manifested in legislation will ensure the presence of both law certainty and law enforcement. Thus, religion and law containing regulations and prohibitions will bind to everyone, either ordinary people or rulers. Religion becoming the universal foundation of life. So,  there should be identification and verification of shared religious values before they are constructed to be law in the plural community life.

Abstract

This article discusses one of the important Islamic traditions in the coastal areas of Central Java, Indonesia, where the majority of Muslims receive moral teachings through the recitation of turāth from the local islamic clerics, known as Kiai. This form of Islamic tradition is represented by Pengajian Ahad Pagi in Semarang and Jamaah Muji Nabi (often abbreviated as Jamuna) in Demak Regency. Examining religious movements through a phenomenological approach, this study found that in delivering the religious materials both Pengajian Ahad Pagi and Jamaah Muji Nabi use the transmission method. Such an approach emphasizes the aspect of narration, in which the Kiai reads one of the turāth (classical Islamic books), interprets it word by word, and then explains it comprehensively. Besides, the educational style delivered by the Kiai in the two said turāth-based teachings emphasized the aspect of Sufism that involved sense. It stands to reason that the congregation feels motivated, both in terms of religious knowledge and morals, and is possibly not trapped in a binary mindset seeing religious issues in black and white as framed by the radical groups. The findings of this study indicate that Pengajian Ahad Pagi and Jamaah Muji Nabi found the continuity of their vision and initial idea in response to the culture and life of the surrounding community.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the attitudes and views of interfaith leaders with the existence of regulations related to issues of religious harmony in Indonesia, whether these regulations have significant benefits for efforts to resolve religious conflicts in Indonesia or vice versa. This research was conducted in Central Java using a qualitative approach. The data was taken from the ideas of interfaith leaders in Semarang and various related references. Data collection was taken by interview and literature study. The data were analyzed descriptively critically. The results of the study indicate that religious conflicts that occur due to various factors or the root causes of conflicts are very diverse. Each religious figure has a different view. Some people consider pluralism as the root cause of conflict, there are also opinions that the cause of conflict is discrimination in the formulation of regulated laws and regulations. Although their views differ on the root causes of the conflict, they agree that in order to maintain religious harmony in Indonesia, there needs to be a law that regulates the rules of religious life in Indonesia.

Abstract

Is religion possible to grow without any authority? Generally people responded the question with two speculative answers: “religion can be and grow without any authority” and “religion can not be and grow without any authority”. The first opinion is based on the argumentation that religion constitutes a divine total comprehension. It does not need any other than the submission of human being to God. Meanwhile, the second opinion is based on the argumentation that religion constitutes individual rights to communicate and submit to God, but in social sphere the development of religion needs “distributors” having credibility to speak and transmit religious messages. However, in fact, religious authority is not a static one, but dynamic. Levels of religious authority and inter relation between the authority levels is a part of the dynamics.

Abstract

Islam has some basic set of shared symbols, beliefs, and rituals that are found in the Quran and Hadith. These form the foundations of universal Islam. But even with the “universal” foundations of Islam we find considerable debate and disagreement. Dealing with the diversity in Islam, we will develop our model, especially through the more complete linguistic analogies. The core of our model borrows Saussure’s concepts of langue (language as a system) and parole (speech acts) and applied it to religion. The transcendent form of a religion, which is parallel to langue, is an ideal form in the minds and hearts of believers. The expressed form, which is analogous to parole, includes interpretations, discourse, debates, rituals, and daily life of believers. The aim of this paper is more to elucidate an analytical model than to make declarative statements about the nature of religion. We argue that a fuller linguistic analogy moves us further in our understanding of this relationship. The results of the analysis show that linguistic modeling of variation in Islam applied through several ways, there are: (1) dialects and local religious practice (2) the transcendent and the expressed as parallels to Saussure’s langue and parole (3) linguistic analogies (4) myth, doctrine, and grammar (4) syntax, Islam and ritual and (5) creoles and pidgins.
