Abstract

T.S. Eliot, a towering figure in the literary world, casts illuminating beams across the fragmented and spiritually barren modern landscape. This paper thoroughly examines Eliot’s oeuvre on modernity through an Islamic lens. By drawing upon Islam's philosophical and spiritual traditions, this research juxtaposes Eliot’s poetic evaluation and tapestry of Islamic perspectives as an ointment to heal the wounds of modern society. At the core of this inquiry, Islamic concepts such as the acknowledgment of the oneness of God (tawhid), mystical Islamic belief and practice (sufiism), and social solidarity (ummah) challenge Eliot’s perspective on modern sickness. This analysis also delves into Eliot’s poetic tapestry to explore how Eliot weaves a solution to the chaos of the modern era, including the fragmentation of identity, the decay of traditional values, and the existential crisis of humanity. This comparative discussion reveals how Islamic thought offers an alternative framework for comprehending the challenges of modernity. Ultimately, the research aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of Eliot’s enduring critiques and the multifaceted Islamic responses to the complexities and disorders of the modern man living under the influence of modern Western civilization.

Abstract

The development of psychosexual stages in children significantly influences their behavior. There are five stages: oral, anal, phallic, latent, and genital. Disruptions or fixations during any stage can impact societal conduct and relationships. In Kafka on the Shore, parental abandonment causes fixation in one of these stages, as seen in the main character, Kafka Tamura. This disrupted bond leads to repressed emotions and unfulfilled desires manifesting as sexual deviance. Therefore, this study aims to describe the development of sexual deviance due to traumatic parental abandonment in Haruki Murakami’s Kafka on the Shore, using a descriptive qualitative method and analyzed through Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory. It affirms that neglectful parental figures can significantly impact a child's psychological development.

Abstract

This article investigates into Kaiser Haq’s poetic masterpiece, “Ode on the Lungi”, exploring its theoretical underpinnings and critical insights. The study employs a multidimensional approach, integrating postcolonial theories, literary analysis, and socio-cultural inquiry to unravel the symbolic significance of the lungi as a representation of subaltern voices. Haq strategically uses the lungi to challenge power imbalances, resist sartorial hegemony, and advocate for sartorial equality in the face of globalization. The research method includes qualitative analysis, theoretical engagement, and empirical evidence, aligning with postcolonial scholars such as Gramsci and Guha. The article underscores the poem’s role in breaking down divisive dichotomies and promoting democratic ideals. Through theoretical insights and close textual analysis, the study explores how the lungi, as a symbol of the underclass, resists aggressive modernism, demanding equal standing in the postcolonial and globalized reality. The poet’s call for “sartorial equality” transcends fashion, becoming a rallying cry for broader societal equality and recognition of marginalized voices. The research concludes by positioning Haq’s “Ode on the Lungi” as a powerful articulation of the subaltern voice within the complexities of postcolonial discourse.

Abstract

Wordplays are fun and pleasurable, yet challenging for translators. The researcher translated the Paperboy novel by Vince Vawter and found many wordplays in it. In this research, the researcher aims to find the various wordplays contained in the novel, determine at what level of language the wordplays are, classify the wordplay into the appropriate taxonomy, and find out the most suitable translation strategy for each wordplay. The methods used are introspective and retrospective. The results of this research show that there are 26 data of wordplays that cover 3 lexical plays, 19 sound plays, and 4 visual plays. In terms of taxonomy, those data cover 7 homonyms, 7 paronyms, 5 malapropisms, 6 rhymes, and 1 eggcorn. The translation strategies used are 19 wordplay to wordplay, 3 wordplay ST to wordplay TT, 1 wordplay to non-wordplay, 1 non-wordplay to wordplay, and 2 editorial techniques. Based on the most used translation strategies, i.e. wordplay to wordplay, it can be seen that even though wordplays are challenging, they are not totally impossible to translate.
