Abstract

Society services activity on cattle waste management system have been implemented in Sido Mulyo Livestock Farmers Group at Pulosari, Jumoyo, Salam, Magelang. Animal byproducts that consist of feces and urine of cattle wastewas processed into organic fertilizer compost and liquid fertilizer. Sido Mulyo Livestock Farmer Group has one unit of 20 m3 biodigester to accommodate the feces from approximately 30 cattle owned by the group member. Biogas has been used as a fuel source for family group members located around the cage. Slurry resulted from anaerobic digestion of biodigester disposed to pastures located on the right side of the cage. Ownership system in the groupis every group member hasa responsibility for taking care of their own cattle. The number of livestock owned by each member of the SidoMulyoLivestock Farmers Group ranged between 1 to 4 cattle. Society services methods that have been implemented was in the form of mentoring for a member of the Sido Mulyogroup. The other activities that have been implemented was the training and development of cattle industry, especially the handling of livestock waste in the form of feces, urine, and the feed residue. The activities was continued by the manufacture of compost packaging design, followed by the last series of activities such as monitoring and program development. The enthusiasm of the group members in joining to the extension activities is very good. The timing of the extension are determined in the afternoon after members of the group have finished searching feed for their cattle. The sustainability forwaste processing into organic fertilizer compost and liquid organic fertilizer becomes a major concern, because it is highly dependent on consumer demand.

Abstract

Limitations and scarcity of natural energy resources has forced the government to develop new renewable energy, one of them by making a pilot hybrid power plant project or Pembangkit Listrik Tenaga Hybrid (PLTH) in coast Pantai Baru, Pandansimo, Bantul. It is an innovative attempt at once problematic, innovative efforts appear because electricity that facilitated community and business opportunity to improve their welfare. Instead, the change still leaves the problem and contestation among stakeholders. Vulnerable groups like women are the groups that most affected by such change. They perform a dual role at the domestic level as well as the public, unfortunately these changes make them as objects rather than subjects of the new renewable energy projects. An effort to shift the women from the position of an object to be the subject of renewable energy is not easy task. In response, the methodological attempt to do is to choose action research to strengthen women as agents of change in the post-construction PLTH. The result, although not all involved, a group of coastal women can no longer be considered vulnerable, but it has become one of the new strengths of coastal communities around PLTH.

Abstract

Salted fish is a fish product with simple preservation method as a solution to increase value added, extend shelf life and expand the distribution chain, and provide convenience and distinctive taste to be consumed. The groups of small industries and marketer “POKLAHSAR SRIKANDI” and “BOGOWONTO” have produced 10-50 kg salted fish per day. The fish is taken from Congot coastal areas, to increase its value added when it was in low price because it was abundant and to maintain the stability of Pohlaksar’s income when it was scarcity. Both the POKLAHSAR have commitment to produce healthy salted fish (without formaldehyde) but they had problem, especially in the rainy season, in drying process that took a long time and attrack the flies so it can be harmfull. Program of Science and Technology for community has applied dryer as innovation product to improve  productivity, hygiene and quality of salted fish. The dryer which was made of affordable material, has affordable operation manner and maintenance, so it can be adopted by fishermen. The design of dryer combine solar heating systems and air heating units using modified furnaces. This dryer is capable to dry 25 kg of fresh fish by reducing their water content from 72.2% to 12.3% within 9 hours. The salted fish processed within this dryer was more white, crunchy and not fishy than the salted fish dried by convensional drying. In addition, the programs also consist of packaging advisory, marketing and business coach to trigger the motivation of both POKLAHSAR for their development and sustainability.

Abstract

The availability of medical record quickly and accurately when needed will greatly help the quality of health care provided to patients. If the medical record filing system were poor then there will be problems that can interfere with the availability of medical record. In the case of medical record filing system, the staffs at Dlingo I Bantul community health center do not using tracer to mark the medical records that were out from storage. This will have an impact on the wrong location, misfile, and complicates the return of medical record in the right order. Method used in this community service was the diffusion of science and technology to design the tracer which is suitable for use in Dlingo I Bantul community health centers. Furthermore, the training was also implemented, started with counseling. Community service was running smoothly. At first, the tracer was not used as a tracker and a guidance of medical record which was out from the storage. After counseling and training, the staffs finally realized that it is necessary to use tracer.

Abstract

Serang village, Karangreja, Purbalingga is a plateau area with an altitude of about 650—1300 above sea level, has high rain fall around 6,240 mm with an average temperature of 20°C. This village is a leading commodity for strawberry with plant area has ever reached 64ha. The main problem faced by the strawberries farmers in the village of Serang is a problem of plant health management to support the production, especially on rainy season. Awareness about healthy seedlings as a main aspect of plant health managed mental so needs to be improved. Therefore, a collaborative research and empowerment of farmers is arranged to assist farmers in identifying problems and how to solve by their own that in maintaining the health of the strawberry plant. This project was conducted firstly in 2013 by KKN-PPM UGM students in collaboration with Ibaraki University, Japan, Bappeda Purbalingga, and government of Purbalingga Regency. The methods were direct survey of field, farmers interview, extension and discussion among students and farmers in formal and informal meetings, then continued by some trainings. The informal meetings were conducted on site in farmers field and it was assumed that although it was not really efficient in time and energy, but it was effective for farmers to emerge their idea on identifying problems and solving methods therefore the farmers empowerment was done in this matter. Due to problem identification activities, it was known that healthy seedlings were the main problem in strawberry cultivation there. The involvement of farmers in the group also needs to be improved as a forum for exchange of ideas to move forward together. As this activity in 2013 is the first project of long-term project to contribute for Serang farmers in plant health management. Some creative methods need to be designed and improved in the future.
