Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find out whether or not the students’ reading habit and students’ reading strategy correlated significantly with their reading comprehension and to find out whether or not students’ reading strategy correlated significantly with their reading comprehension. The method of this research used quantitative method in correlation research. The sample of the study was seventeen of third semester students of English Education Study Program of Tridinanti University Palembang. The data were collected by administering reading test and gives two questionnaires; reading habit questionnaires and reading strategy questionnaires. The data were analyzed by using descriptive and correlational analyses. There were two results found: First, the students’ reading  habit had no significant correlation with their reading comprehension. It was found that correlation coeficient  level between reading habit and reading comprehension was (-0.099) with the sig. value was higher than 0.05 (0.705). Second, the correlation coeficient level between students’ reading strategy and reading comprehension was not correlated (-0.451) with the  sig. value higher than 0.05 (0.069).Keywords:  reading habit, reading strategy, reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study was conducted to find out whether or not it was effective to use guessing words in teacing speaking to the eighth grade students of MTs Nurussalam OKU Timur. Pre experimental was used in this study, with 33 students chosen as the sample by using convenience sampling. The data obtained were statistically analyzed by using t-test. The result of the pair sample t-test showed that the value of t-obtained was 4.635, where the critical value was 2.035 at the significant level ɑ = 0.05 and degree of freedom was 32. Since the t-obtained was higher than the critical value, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and alternative hypothesis was accepted. It could be concluded that it was effective to use guessing words in teaching speaking to the eight grade students of MTs Nurussalam OKU Timur. This is also implies the guessing words game expected to enhance students‘ motivation and interesting in learning activities, so they can improve their speaking achievement.Keywords: Teaching, Speaking, and Guessing Words.

Abstract

The reading program, BUGEMM runs twice in one academic year in SMA Plus Negeri 17. It requires the students to write two different kinds of scientific research papers, English and Bahasa. This study attempted to know BUGEMM program implementation, advantages, problems, and the factors prohibiting and supporting the program. 356 students, 11 teachers, parents, and head master participated in this study. Qualitative data were employed to identify the natural settings, and phenomena occurred during the program. The data were collected by questionnaires, interview, observation, and documentation. The study resulted: (1) The program started from the socialization to the tenth grader, continued to the writing process during one semester, examination, and revision; (2) The advantages of the program were: cultivating the students‘ reading and writing habit, critical thinking, and inhabiting them in doing research; (3) the problems were: the program which organized twice in a year, the writing system and conducting chapter IV; (4) Students‘ speaking and writing skills were the teachers‘ problems; and (5) Printer and books prohibiting the students whiles parents and facilitiation supporting the students.Keywords: implementation, BUGEMM program.

Abstract

The aims of this research were 1) to describe what extent games improve speaking achievement; 2) to identify the situation when games are implemented in the speaking class. The subject of the study was the students of class 8.5 of State of Junior High School 26Palembang. The research was carried out in two cycles, they were identifying the problem, planning the action, implementing the action, observing the action, reflecting the action and revising the plan. Data were collected through survey, observation and interview.The researcher analyzed qualitative data through constant comparative method. The quantitative data were analyzed by using descriptive statistic, and collected by conducting pre-test and post-test, are analyzed to know the improvement of students’ speaking achievement.The mean score of pre-test is 4.08. This score improved to 5.31 in post-test 1 and even higher in post-test 2 that is 6.05. From the qualitative data, the research finding shows that students’ speaking achievement improved in the term of ability in: 1) answering the teacher’s questions orally, 2) identifying the words and grammar used in the expression, 3) making sentences using appropriate grammar and vocabulary, and 4) expressing their idea.  Keywords: speaking achievement games, classroom action research.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to find out: a) whether or not there was any significant improvement in writing descriptive text between the students who were taught by using DLC strategy and those who were not at the Eight Grade Students of SMPN 1 Sembawa. b) whether or not there was any significant difference in writing achievement between the students who were taught by using DLC strategy and those who were not at the Eight Grade Students of SMPN 1 Sembawa. In this study used a quasi experimental design, there were experimental group and control group. Both of them were given a pre-test and post test (before and after treatment). The population of the study was the entire eighth graders of SMPN 1 Sembawa in Academic Year 2017/2018. In this study, the writer used purposive sampling that consists of 35 students for experimental group and 35 students for control group. To analyze the hypotheses, the data from pre-test and post-test from the experimental and control group were analyzed by using paired sample t-test and independent sample-test. Based on the result of paired t-test with t-obtained < t-table and with the mean of pre-test was 40,32 to 69,85 in post-test, it meant that the students‘ writing skill on descriptive text was significantly improved. Based on the result of independent sample t-test of post-test results of both experimental and control group, the output sig. level 0,05 in two tailed testing with df = 68 and the critical value of t-table = 1,995 since the value of t-obtained 6,999 was higher than the critical value of t-table. It meant that the students‘ writing skill on descriptive text was significantly differenced.Key words: DLC strategy, descriptive text, writing skill.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out whether or not there is a influencing of media sentence building grid to the increasing writing ability on midwifery students. This research was descriptive study and the sample of this research was taken by using total sampling with total 70 midwifery students at STIK Bina Husada Palembang. The data were obtained by using writing test that were analyzed by using t-test and paired sample correlation analyses by means of Statistical Product and Service Solution (SPSS) version 12.00 computer program. Based on the data analysis, the influencing of media sentence building to the increasing writing ability in paragraph was 4.750 at the significance level p< 0.05 in two tailed. Since the value of t-obtained was higher than the critical value of t-table and the paired sample was 0.540. Most of students got the improvement and the outstanding level after giving the treatment. It meant that there was a significant influencing of building sentence grid to the increasing writing ability.Keywords: influencing, media sentence building grid, and writing ability.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out whether or not there was any significant improvement on students’ writing skill between students who used paragraph frame strategy and those who used sentence combining strategy of the seventh grade students at SMPN 33 of Palembang. The research method was quasi-experimental method. The design of this study was non-equivalent control group design. The technique for collecting the data was the test. The population of this study was all Seventh Grade Students of SMPN 33 of Palembang, and the sample of this study was VII.1 and VII.2. The experimental group had 33 students; meanwhile, control group had 35 students. The data were collected by giving pretest, treatment and post-test for both groups. The data were analyzed by using independent and paired sample t-test. The result of the data analysis showed that the mean score of post-test of experimental group was 81.36 and post-test of control group was 63.14. Furthermore, it shows that the value of sig, (2-tailed) was 0.00 and it was lower than 0.05 as the significant level. The value of t-obtained was 4.809 which was higher than t-table critical value of 1.996 and the degree of freedom was 66. Based on the result of data analysis, It can be concluded that there was any significant improvement on students’ writing skill between students who used paragraph frame strategy and those who used sentence combining strategy. Keywords: paragraph frame strategy, sentence combining strategy, writing skill.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to know factors thataffect the emergence of fear of public speaking of students’ English education at Universitas PGRI Palembang in terms of experiencing panic and dread, fearing at the fear itself, and negative beliefs about themselves and the audience.The method of this study was descriptive qualitative analysis.The participants of this study were 40 students of English Education at Universitas PGRI Palembang in the Academic Years of 2017/2018. The data were analyzed by checking the respond of the questionnaire and calculating the percentage analysis. Results of the study showed that those factors were experiencing panic and dread in categories feeling shame and feeling being alone, and then perceives something to be a significant danger or threat;fearing at the fear itself in categories pounding heart, trembling/shaking, lightheaded, numbness, and fear of losing control; andnegative beliefs about themselves and the audience in categories negative beliefs about themselves and the audience. Keywords: students’ ability, and public speaking.

Abstract

The aimed of this research was to find out whether the use of Annotating Text Strategy could help teacher or not in teaching and learning process, especially in teaching report text. There were 58 students of eleventh grade SMA Nurul Iman Palembang in academic year 2016/2017. They were divided to be two groups, experimental (29 students) and control group (29 students). In this study, the writers used Non-equivalent group design. We taught the experimental group students to read a report text by using Annotating Text Strategy. Meanwhile, we taught the control group students to read a report text by using lecturing method. The data from two groups were collected from the results of pre-test and post-test scores which were analyzed to get mean score differences. The writers find out that mean score of the experimental group improved significantly from 54,48 pre-test to be 74,14 in post-test. Based on the independent sample t-test analysis, it was found that the significant level was 0,04 < 0,05. It meant that there was any significant difference in reading comprehension between students who were taught by using Annotating Text Strategy and those who were not.Keywords: reading comprehension, report text and annotating text strategy.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out whether or not thereis an improving speaking active ability by using direct method on 2nd semester of midwifery students of STIK Bina Husada Palembang. This research was true experimental design the sample of this research was taken by using total sampling with total 70 students of midwifery students at STIK Bina Husada Palembang. The data were obtained by using speaking test on pre and post. To verify the hypotheses, the primary data were analyzed by using t-test and paired sample corellation analyses by SPPSS version 22 computer Program Based on the data analysis, the improving speaking active ability by using direct method Based on the data analysis, t test in the pre test and post test experiment was pre 68 and post 81 and the paired sample correlation got 0.770 at the significance level of p <0.05. Because the t and r-obtained values were higher.And from the average score obtained by students it can be seen that there was significant improving speak active ability especially in comprehension and fluency. It can be concluded that, the direct method usage in the class can improve the students’ speaking active ability Keywords: direct method, and speaking.
