Abstract

The problem of this study was “what are the indirect learning strategies in writing skill applied by the eleventh grade students of SMAN 12 Palembang?” The objective of this study was to find out the indirect learning strategies in writing skill applied by the eleventh grade students of State Senior High School 12 Palembang. This study used qualitative descriptive method. The population of this study was 232 of the eleventh grade students of State Senior High School 12 Palembang in the academic year of 2016 / 2017. This study used purposive sampling technique. The data were collected through the SILL questionnaire and documentation. Based on the study, it showed that eventhough there was no learning strategy applied by the students in the high use, but according to the average use of the strategy, metacognitive strategies (Mean = 3.28) became the most frequently strategies applied by the students, then, followed by affective strategies (Mean = 2.65), and the last was social strategies (Mean = 2.46). In conclusion, all the indirect learning strategies in writing skill that are metacognitive, affective, and social strategies were applied by the eleventh grade students of State Senior High School 12 Palembang. Keywords: Analysis, Indirect Learning Strategies, Writing Skill.

Abstract

Writing is one of the four major skills and it is important because it needs a number of activities: setting goals, generating ideas, organizing information, selecting appropriate language, making a draft, reading and reviewing it, then revising and editing. The objective of the study was to find out whether or not there was any significant difference on students’ writing skill in recount text between the tenth grade students who were taught by using PLEASE strategy and those who were not. The population of the study was tenth grade students of SMAN 11 Palembang in the academic year 2016/2017. In doing the study, the writer did the experimental method by using quasi-experimental design to the two groups of students. The X IPA 5 class became the experimental group and the X IPS 2 became the control group. The two classes were chosen because they had the same level of competency in learning English. A test was the instrument for collecting the data. The test was administered twice, as the pre-test and post-test. The result showed that PLEASE strategy had a significant effect on the students’ writing skill.Keywords: writing skill, PLEASE Strategy.

Abstract

The aims of this research were 1) to describe what extent games improve speaking achievement; 2) to identify the situation when games are implemented in the speaking class. The subject of the study was the students of class 8.5 of State of Junior High School 26 Palembang. The research was carried out in two cycles, they were identifying the problem, planning the action, implementing the action, observing the action, reflecting the action and revising the plan. Data were collected through survey, observation and interview. The researcher analyzed qualitative data through constant comparative method. The quantitative data were analyzed by using descriptive statistic, and collected by conducting pre-test and post-test, are analyzed to know the improvement of students’ speaking achievement. The mean score of pre-test is 4.08. This score improved to 5.31 in post-test 1 and even higher in post-test 2 that is 6.05. From the qualitative data, the research finding shows that students’ speaking achievement improved in the term of ability in: 1) answering the teacher’s questions orally, 2) identifying the words and grammar used in the expression, 3) making sentences using appropriate grammar and vocabulary, and 4) expressing their idea. Keywords: speaking achievement games, classroom action research.

Abstract

The problem in the research is whether the hermeneutic method could increase the students‘ understanding in cultural values at SMP LTI IGM Palembang. It aims to find out whether the hermeneutic method could or could not increase the students‘ understanding in cultural values. The reserach used pretest-posttest control group design. In experiment class, the mean value in pretest was 58 and the posttest score was 78 with gain score 20. Kn control class, the mean value in pretest was 57 and the posttest score was 74 with gain score 17. After evaluation, the mean value in the posttest of students‘ results in understanding the shortsory text, both classes got significant value 0,000 which is less than significant alpha 0,05. It can be concluded that the hermeneutic method could increase the students‘ understanding in cultural values through undertanding local shortstories in Sumatera Selatan.Keywords: hermeneutic method, the understanding of cultural values, students of SMP LTI IGM Palembang class VII.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out whether or not there was a significant improvement in writing and speaking abilities in narrative stories of the students who were taught by using Storyboard and those who were not. This study applied a quasi experimental design. The population of the study was the tenth graders with the total number of 224, where sixty-four students were taken as the sample by using purposive sampling. The data were collected by using writing and speaking tests and analyzed statistically by using paired-sample t-test and independent sample t-test. Based on the result independent sample t-test for writing test and the value of t-obtained (6.042) was higher than critical value of t-test (2.000 and 1.994). In addition, the value of t-obtained of speaking (4.649) was higher than critical value of t-test (2.000 and 1.994). This means that there was significant improvement in the abilities to write and speak narrative stories between the students who were taught by using Storyboard and those who were not. Thus, the use of storyboard could improve the students‘ writing and speaking abilities in retelling narrative stories.Keywords: Improving, writing, speaking, abilities, and storyboard

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of modeling model learning the way to the ability to write text fable stories by students of class VIII SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Medan Year Learning 2016/2017. The population of this study is a class of 50 students, consisting of 2 classes. Based on the determination of the selected sample , class VIII A was as the experimental class and VIII B was as the control class. The method used is the experimental method. Based on the results of research, the ability to write fable story text using modeling modeling the way in experiment class was good because 7 students reach the value of 66-79 (32%), while the ability to write fable story text by using conventional learning model / lecture on control class is less because 11 students reach a value of 40-54 (40%). From the result of hypothesis testing where tcount> ttable was dk = (N1+N2)-2=48 by comparing tcount value with table value obtained was higher than t-table that is 13,78>1,78.Keywords : modeling the way, write, fable story text.

Abstract

The objective of study was to improve the students‘ ability in writing personal experiences through clustering techniques to the seventh grade students of SMPN 01 Betung. The research method was the classroom action research (PTK) that consist of three cycles. Each cycles consists of four stages that are planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The cycle 1 was conducted on February 3, 2017, The cycle II was on February 17, 2017 and cycle III was on February 22, 2017. The subject of this study were 34 students. The techniques for collecting the data used were observation of students activities and the results of writing test from each cycle. The indicator of succesful implementing this strategy was that the students had achieved the writing score which is higher than minimum criteria mastery learning score (KKM >65). The results of observation showed that the average score from each cycle was 70.6%. The average score of cycle 1 was 61.79 with standard studying mastery was 44,12%. The average score of cycle 2 was 66.15 with standard studying mastery was 67.65%. The average score of cycle 3 was 76.03 with standard studying mastery was 85.29%. Based on the results of study, it can be concluded that the students‘ ability writing personal experience through clustering techniques improved significantly.Keywords: ability, writing personal experience, clustering technique.

Abstract

This study entitled language acquisition of sentences types by autism children of Pelita Hati elementary school Palembang. The research problem is how far did the autism children acquire the language?. This Study aimed to describe the type of acquisition of sentence forms of autism children. It used descriptive method. The data was gained from these utterances; it was produced by the second graders of Pelita Hati Elementary School Palembang. The data was collected by observation, note taking, and recording. The result showed that all of sentences acquired by the students had achieved declarative, interogative, imperative sentence. Meanwhile, the exclamative sentences had not been acquired yet.Keywords: children with special needs, sentences.

Abstract

The use of Tableau technique in drama class as one of the performance arts has been utilized in recent years. Tableau technique is a kind of technique that allows students to visualize and interpret text in a dramatic pose. The aim of this study was to find out whether or not the use of Tableau technique could improve the students‘ writing achievement, especially in writing plot summary. One group time series design was applied in this study. Thirty students of STBA Methodist Palembang were selected as the participants of this study. The data were collected by using a one-item writing test and were analyzed by using paired sample t-test. The finding of this study showed that the students gained better improvement in their plot summary writing achievement (mean diff=2.267, p=0.000) after using Tableau technique. In conclusion, Tableau technique not only could be applied as one of the performance arts in drama class, but also could be used to improve the students‘ plot summary writing achievement.
