Abstract

AbstractThe purpose of this study was to determine the differences in the cloze test result and open-ended test result as well as students' perceptions of the cloze test and open-ended test in reading comprehension.This research used descriptive quantitative method. The subjects of this study were 25 students in the first semester who took reading comprehension course in the English Study Program, Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu. Researchers used tests and interviews as research instruments. The results of this study indicatedof cloze test was higher than the result of open ended. From students’ perception, they were familiar to both tests however cloze test was easier than open ended test.Researcher suggests students to be more familiar with many types of tests, so that students' reading comprehension can be further improved.Keywords: Cloze Test, Open-Ended Test, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

AbstractThe objective of this research is to find out and describe the EnglishStudents’ Speaking Performances in English Webinar Series Activitywhich had been conducted on January 4th – 10th, 2021 with the theme“Teaching and Learning English is Easy, Fun, and Cool”. Theresearch design of this research uses descriptive qualitative method.The instruments used were: (a) The Analytic Rubrics; and (b) thevideo recording from Zoom Meeting Application of students’ speakingwho had followed the English Webinar Series Activity. The result ofthis research showed the English students have a quite good score tomaster the components of speaking performances as fluency,pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar accuracy and comprehension.This research is suggested to English students should understand thecomponents of speaking performances when they perform in publicspeaking.Keywords: Speaking Performances, Evaluation, Webinar Activity.

Abstract

AbstractThe students do online learning covid-19 pandemic, which makes them study remotely at home, where before the pandemic they did face-to-face learning. The pandemic brings many challenges for students that require students to try to get past the challenges of distance learning. This research was conducted to determine the efforts of students to face the challenges of online learning in English Education, Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu. This research was descriptive qualitative study. This research used a questionnaire as an instrument of the research (Barrot et al, 2021). They were distributed to 107 students of the English Education Study Program at Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu. The result of the research show that there are some of students’ efforts to face online learning challenges, namely: self-regulation challenges, technological literacy and competency challenges, student isolation challenges, technology adequacy challenges, technological complexity challenges, learning resource challenges, and learning environment challenges. Those seven types of challenges are often done by the students as this effort to face online learning challenges in pandemic Covid-19. Based on the results above, it can be concluded that the of students' efforts in online learning challenges is Technological Complexity. Where the highest result is 44% or 48 students often did that effort to face online learning challenges.Keywords: Students’ Effort, Online Learning, Challenges

AbstractThe objective of this research is to find out anddescribe the lack of the rhetorical structure used byEnglish Students in writing the result & discussionsection in the Thesis academic year 2020 period 1. Thisstudy use qualitative research, and used descriptivequalitative. The result of this research, the englishstudents still lack in write there are: in backgroundinformation and summarising result. And thediscussion of this research the english students stilllack in write: interpreting result, comparing result, andecaluating result. This reserach suggested the studentscan used rhetorical structure based on Yang & Allison(2003) model to write of research results anddiscussion section. The reason are: First, this model isbetter than theses guidebook of FKIP. Second, thismodel contains: background information, reportingresult, summarising result. Abstract

AbstractOnline speaking learning is learning that is done indirectly and uses media as a mediator. This study was conducted to determine barriers to learning speaking online and determine the most dominant barriers. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. The researcher used a questionnaire as an instrument which was distributed to 24 English students as research subjects. After analyzing the data obtained, the researcher found 21 problems that became obstacles in learning speaking online. While the most dominant barriers found were learners psychological features with a percentage of 39.21%.Keywords: Speaking skill, Online Learning, Barriers, Covid-19A. Introduction

Abstract

AbstractThis research discusses gender inequality on black women characters in "Hidden Figures" Film. The objectives of this research are to find gender inequality and to show what factors that cause gender inequality in “Hidden Figures” film. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. This is related to the description of the data in the form of a conversation in film. Analysis in this research using analysis from spreadlay and theory from Fakih and Relawati. The results of this reseacrh indicate that there are two types of gender inequality found namely marginalization and subordination. In addition there are four factors that cause gender inequality in “Hidden Figures”film , namely the factor of public confidence in the myth, factor of rationality, factor of Patriarchy and Factor of Capitalist System.Keyword: Film, Gender Inequality, Factor, Hidden Figures

Abstract

Abstract Nowadays, the use of code mixing is easily found in the oralcommunication, especially in the daily communication amongteenagers who like to code and switch their language to show thatthey are modern. The objectives of this research are to find out typesof code mixing used by major characters of Layangan Putus tv seriesand to know the factors that cause the use of code mixing. This studyemployed a qualitative descriptive method as research design.Layangan Putus Tv Series was chosen as the object of this study. Inthis case, the researcher took the utterance from major characters(Kinan, Aris, and Lidya) in 10 episodes of the film as the source ofthe data of this research. The instrument used in this research wasobservation checklist. The checklist consisted of the types of codemixing based on Muysken (2000) theory. There were two findings ofthis research; First, there were three types of Code Mixing used bymajor characters of Layangan Putus TV Series. There were 113insertion, 108 alternation, and 9 congruent lexicalization. Second,there were maybe four factors cause the use of code mixing inLayangan Putus TV series, namely; the participants, the setting orsocial context of interaction, the topic, and the function ofconversation. As a consequence, the researcher recommends thatfuture researchers should make a study of the phenomenon of codemixingin the latest and best TV series and Movie produced byDirector from Indonesia. Abstract

Abstract Speech act is an action performed or conveyed by means of speech. The aims of this research is to analyze speech act used by three governors of Indonesia in the Mata Najwa Talk Show Episode “Kita Bisa Apa” Tiga Gubernur Ditantang Tiktok, Siapa Paling Jago?”. This research has two objectives : first, to analyze speech act used by three governors of Indonesia in the Mata Najwa Talk Show Episode “Kita Bisa Apa” Tiga Gubernur Ditantang Tiktok, Siapa Paling Jago?”, and to analyze the function of speech act used by three governors of Indonesia in the Mata Najwa Talk Show Episode “Kita Bisa Apa” Tiga Gubernur Ditantang Tiktok, Siapa Paling Jago?”. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. The description of the data is in the form of utterances and examined based on Austin theories of speech act. Based on the obtained result, it can be concluded that the three governors, Ganjar Pranowo, Anies Baswedan, and Ridwan Kamil applied three types of speech act (locutionary act, illocutionary act, perlocutionary act). Ganjar Pranowo and Anies Baswedan mostly used locutionary act, while Ridwan Kamil used illocutionary act the most. The least used speech act by three governors was perlocutionary act. While three of them did not employ commissive and declarative function, they only used representative, directive, and expressive function of speech act.
