Abstract

This study aims to determine and describe lecturers' English language skills, which can be seen through the TOEFL test. This research method is descriptive qualitative. The researcher gave a TOEFL-like test to 109 lecturers as research subjects. TOEFL ability is mapped into the Common European Framework of Reference for Language (CEFR), measured at four different levels, namely A2, B1, B2, and C. The results show that no lecturer has C1 ability in the Listening section. Two lecturers are at level B2, 12 people are at level B1, and the remaining 95 people are at level A2. The average for Listening is in the A2-SD level category. For Structure and Written Expression, only four lecturers are at level B2; 25 at B1 level; and 80 at level A2. The average for SWE is 40 in the A2 elementary level category. As for the Reading section, only one lecturer is at level C1; 2 at level B2; 6 at level B1; 98 at level A2. The average score for Reading is in the A2-SD level category. In conclusion, most of the lecturers' English skills (Listening, Structure and Writing Expression, and Reading) are still very weak. Abstract

In this research, the researcher wants to know what are the forms and what is the request strategy that frequently used by the English department students. The objectives of this research were to know and describe the form of request expressions used by the English department students, and also to find out what is the request strategy they used. The design of this research was descriptive method. The data were collected by using the cards, and the samples expressed the instruction based on the cards. The data were analyzed based on the category framework of request strategies proposed by Blum-Kulka et al (1989). From the three categories of request strategies written by Blum-Kulka et.al (1989), Direct level, Conventionally Indirect Level, and Non-Conventionally Indirect level.  The students only used the conventionally indirect level when they expressed the request to the hearer, there were ‘can’, ‘could’, and ‘would’ that involves in query preparatory. From the result of this research, the researcher can conclude that there are some forms of request expression that used by the English Department students, such as can you, could you, and would you. From the categories of request strategies written by Blum-Kulka et.al 1989, the students only used the conventionally indirect level when they expressed the request to the hearer, there are can, could, and would.

Abstract

The Independent Learning Campus Teaching Program (MBKM) organized by the Ministry of Education and Culture. The Teaching Campus Program is currently the third batch assigned to teach in accordance with Literacy and Numeracy guidelines, assist with technology adaptation, and assist school administration and teachers. One of the schools that houses the Teaching Campus is SMP Negeri 39 North Bengkulu which is located in Batik Nau, Batik Nau District, North Bengkulu Regency, Bengkulu. Teaching Campus students also have a responsibility in correcting students' low behavior and interest in learning. The results of this Teaching Campus program are as a process in adding relationships, adding experience outside the world of lectures, developing insight, character and soft skills of students, encouraging and spurring national development by fostering community motivation to participate in development, as well as increasing the role and real contribution of universities and students in national development

Abstract

Program bimbingan belajar Bahasa Inggris merupakan salah satu bentuk program pengabdian masyarakat (KKN) Manndiri tahun 2021 yang bertujuan untuk menumbuhkan kemampuan anak-anak usia dini dalam mempelajari Bahasa Inggris . Selain itu yakni dari pelaksanaan program ini bagi mahasiswa dapat menerapkam ilmu dan teori yang sudah didapatkan dari dunia perkuliahan selain itu bagi kampus dapat memperlihatkan kepada masyarakat bahwa mahasiswa mampu mempertegas eksistensi perguruan tinggi yang mampu menciptakan mahasiswa yang mampu membawa perubahan yang lebih baik kepada masyarakat. Sasaran pengabdian ini adalah anak-anak SDN 69 kota Bengkulu , Rt 01 kelurahan kandang limun. Dari program ini memiliki tujuan utama yaitu melalui program bimbingan belajar Bahasa Inggris anak-anak usia dini bisa mendapatkan pengetahuan dasar Bahasa Inggris seperti bagaimana cara pengucapan yang baik dan benar baik itu kata atau kalimat yang digunakan dalam kegiatan sehari-hari yang berhubungan dengan kehidupan dan usia mereka. Program bimbingan belajar ini berlangsung  sekitar 5 hari yang masing-masing pertemuan selama 120 menit yakni hari kamis, jumat, Rabu, kamis jumat. Dari program ini bisa terlihat bahwa sebelum adanya kegiatan ini anak-anak belum mengerti sedikitpun tentang Bahasa Inggris dan setelah adanya kegiatan ini anak-anak memiliki perumabahan kemampuan berBahasa Inggris level dasar. Abstract

Pemberlakuan pembatasan tersebut bertujuan untuk mengurangi penyebaran COVID-19 di dalam dan sekitar Bengkulu, selain itu juga akan berdampak pada perekonomian masyarakat Bengkulu. Dampak ekonomi akan paling dirasakan oleh para pelaku UMKM dan pelaku komersial lainnya yang kurang berminat untuk membeli produk sehingga mengakibatkan berkurangnya pendapatan bagi pelaku UMKM bahkan tidak ada pemasukan sama sekali bagi sebagian pelaku usaha. Hal ini dapat berdampak pada pemutusan hubungan kerja (PHK) untuk menekan biaya produksi atau bahkan berujung pada kebangkrutan para pelaku ekonomi atau perusahaan, khususnya di wilayah Bengkulu. Salah satu cara untuk menambah penghasilan dalam situasi ekonomi pandemi seperti ini adalah dengan memproduksi atau menjual barang-barang yang berhubungan dengan kebersihan dan meningkatkan sistem imun tubuh. Ada banyak minuman tradisional Indonesia yang memiliki manfaat untuk tubuh. Beberapa diantaranya yaitu ada wedang jahe, wedang ronde, wedang secang, dan wedang uwuh. Wedang uwuh adalah salah satu minuman tradisional yang kerap digunakan dalam pengobatan tradisional. Wedang uwuh adalah ramuan tradisional yang terbuat dari 100% rempah alami yang sudah turun temurun sejak zaman Raja-raja Mataram.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to find out the readability level of the texts in English textbook based on Fog Index (FI). This research was categorized as descriptive quantitative research. The object of this research was reading materials English textbook entitled English in Mind Second Edition by Cambridge University Press for tenth grade of Vocational Senior High School. FOG index was used to determine the readability level of the texts based on the average number of sentences and hard words (polysillabic). The finding of this research revealed that the readability of the texts in English in Mind second edition textbook by Cambridge University was easy based on FOG Index (FI) analysis result. Based on FOG Index (FI) analysis result, the percentage of level of readability of English in Mind textbook showed that there were 26 (68%) of texts were easy and 12 (32%) of texts were moderate. Overall, the readability of the texts in English in Mind second edition textbook by Cambridge University was dominantly easy for grade tenth of SMKN 3 Kota Bengkulu. It was suggested for the teachers or the readers to understand readability level of reading materials and know whether the reading materials given to their students are appropriate for them or not.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out and describe the types of character educational values conveyed in Encanto animation movie. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The researchers used Kemendikbud formulation to analyze character educational values. The 18 types of character educational values, based on Kemendikbud includes religious, honesty, tolerance, discipline, hardworking, creativity, independent, democratic, curiosity, national spirit, love for the homeland, appreciate achievement, communicative, love peace, likes to read, cares about the environment, cares about social, and responsibility. In this research only 11-character educational values were found. They are honesty, tolerance, discipline, creativity, curiosity, love for the homeland, appreciate achievement, communicative, love peace, cares about social, responsibility. So, there are 7-character educational values that have not been conveyed in Encanto animation movie. They are religious, independent, democratic, hardworking, national spirit, likes to read, and cares about the environment. There are 58 dialogues conveyed as the character educational values. Those are 2 values of  honesty, 1 value of tolerance, 1 value of discipline, 3 values of creativity, 13 values of curiosity, 1 value of love for the homeland, 2 values of appreciate achievement, 4 values of communicative, 8 values of love peace, 22 values of cares about social, and 1 value of responsibility. Then, the researchers found the dominant character educational values in the movie is cares about social which is conveyed in 22 dialogues.

Abstract

AbstractThe objective of this research is to find out and describe the EnglishStudents’ Speaking Performances in English Webinar Series Activitywhich had been conducted on January 4th – 10th, 2021 with the theme“Teaching and Learning English is Easy, Fun, and Cool”. Theresearch design of this research uses descriptive qualitative method.The instruments used were: (a) The Analytic Rubrics; and (b) thevideo recording from Zoom Meeting Application of students’ speakingwho had followed the English Webinar Series Activity. The result ofthis research showed the English students have a quite good score tomaster the components of speaking performances as fluency,pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar accuracy and comprehension.This research is suggested to English students should understand thecomponents of speaking performances when they perform in publicspeaking.Keywords: Speaking Performances, Evaluation, Webinar Activity.

Abstract

This study is aimed to find out English as a Foreign Language (EFL) college students’ speaking constrains in research proposal seminar presentation. The design of the research was a qualitative descriptive. The subjects of this research were 29 students of English Study Program of Muhammadiyah of Bengkulu who presented their proposal on April 2020 – June 2020. The researcher used observation checklist as the instrument of this research. The checklist was designed based on Gan (2012). The questions were divided into five aspects; limited number of vocabulary, hard to apply grammar rules, and not perfect pronunciation and Intonation. The findings revealed that speaking constrains encountered by the students of English Education Study Program of Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu in proposal seminar presentation were limited number of vocabulary, hard to apply grammar rules, not perfect pronunciation and intonation. It is suggested that students take a lot of practices and make a good preparation. Structure your talk by the same order that you have structured your research proposal. Moreover, you can also attend English offline academic seminar and watch English seminar on You Tube more frequently.Key Words: EFL college students, speaking constrains, proposal seminar.
