Abstract

This research aims to investigate factors affecting willingness to communicate in English in social media. This research was conducted in a descriptive method framework. Specifically, the research described factors that affect students' willingness to communicate in English in social media at English study program at the fourth semester of Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu academic year 2018. The subjects of this research were fourth-semester students of English Education study program of Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu Academic Year 2018 consisted of class A, B, and C.  The populations of the study were 77 students. The instruments used were questionnaire and interview. The data obtained from both questionnaire and interview were then analyzed by the process of checking, classifying, determining, and analyzing the data by using the percentage formula. The results of the study showed that there were five factors affecting willingness to communicate in English in social media. They were self-confidence, personality, motivation, attitude, and anxiety. The dominant factor was motivation since it had the highest percentage. In addition, the study also revealed some reasons why students have the willingness to communicate through social media.

Abstract

There are many researches on readability of reading materials conducted by reading material experts, but very few investigating readability of reading materials used in teaching reading at state-owned Islamic secondary schools. This research dealt with readability of texts used in teaching reading for IX grade students of a state-owned Islamic secondary school. This research is a descriptive research which used quantitative method. It aimed at investigating the readability of texts used in teaching reading for IX grade students of MTsN 2 Kota Bengkulu. The subjects of this research were 63 texts used in teaching reading for IX grade students at MTsN 2 Kota Bengkulu. The instrument used to collect data was Fry readability formula (graph). The data were interpreted by using percentage.The research findings show that 54% out of 63 texts are easy for grade IX students of MTsN 2 Kota Bengkulu; 27% out of 63 texts are difficult; 10 % out of 63 texts are invalid; and 9% out of 63 texts are appropriate. Based on the research findings, there are some suggestions to note; (1) English teachers at MTsN 2 Kota Bengkulu are suggested to apply readability analysis on texts before they are used in teaching reading; (2) Writers of English textbooks which are intended to be used by grade IX students are suggested to be aware of readability of texts they included into the textbooks they wrote; and (3) other researchers are suggested to conduct further researches on the findings of this research by employing other readability formulas, or other methods of readability analysis.

Abstract

Reading comprehension skill seems to be a complecated subject for students time to time. Teachers as the one who must train studentsto master the skill, keep struggling to utter the problem. This condition need teachers to find out probable solutions. One possiblesolution is by using specific strategy in taching, like the one called Read, Cover, Remember, Retell (RCRR). The purpose of thisresearch is to determine the effect of using Read, Cover, RCRR Strategy on students’ reading comprehension skill. The study isdesigned in quasi experimental method. The subjects of this research were students of English study program ofMuhammadiyah University of Bengkulu. In collecting data, researchers used a test. Result of the study shows that there was anincreasing scores on students’ reading comprehension skill who were taught by using RCRR. Based on the study done byresearchers, RCRR has brought positive effect on students reading comprehension skill. Therefore, the strategy is recommended to be used to teach reading comprehension in classes.

Abstract

AbstractThe students do online learning covid-19 pandemic, which makes them study remotely at home, where before the pandemic they did face-to-face learning. The pandemic brings many challenges for students that require students to try to get past the challenges of distance learning. This research was conducted to determine the efforts of students to face the challenges of online learning in English Education, Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu. This research was descriptive qualitative study. This research used a questionnaire as an instrument of the research (Barrot et al, 2021). They were distributed to 107 students of the English Education Study Program at Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu. The result of the research show that there are some of students’ efforts to face online learning challenges, namely: self-regulation challenges, technological literacy and competency challenges, student isolation challenges, technology adequacy challenges, technological complexity challenges, learning resource challenges, and learning environment challenges. Those seven types of challenges are often done by the students as this effort to face online learning challenges in pandemic Covid-19. Based on the results above, it can be concluded that the of students' efforts in online learning challenges is Technological Complexity. Where the highest result is 44% or 48 students often did that effort to face online learning challenges.Keywords: Students’ Effort, Online Learning, Challenges

Abstract

Kegiatan kkn ini dilaksanakan di tiga desa yaitu Desa Pekiknyaring, Desa Bintang Selatan, dan Desa Pasar Pedati di Kecamatan Pondok Kelapa Kabupaten Bengkulu Tengah. dimana  kegiatan ini tentang cara penanganan berita hoax, gerakan membagi masker dan cara mencuci tangan. Kegiatan yang dilakukan untuk menangani permasalahan-permasalahan pada masyarakat. Permasalahan yang muncul: (1) minimnya pengetahuan masyarakat dalam menangani berita hoax. (2) kurangnya kesadaran masyarakat dalam mematuhi prokes seperti tidak menggunakan masker saat sakit dan keluar rumah. (3) kurangnya kesadaran anak-anak akan kebersihan seperti tidak mencuci tangan yang benar. Adapun metode pemecahan permasalahannya yaitu dengan cara memberikan edukasi dan penyuluhan kepada masyarakat. Hasil yang didapat dari kegiatan ini: (1) masyarakat sudah lebih cerdas dalam menelaah informasi yang diperolehnya secara objektif. (2) masyarakat selalu menggunakan masker saat keluar rumah dan mematuhi prokes guna menekan penekanan penyebaran Covid-19. (3) anak-anak mengerti akan  pentingnya hidup bersih dan cara mencuci tangan yang benar. Jadi kegiatan yang dilakukan oleh mahasiswa guna untuk memberikan pemahaman pada masyarakat agar selalu bijak dalam menerima informasi baik itu tentang Covid-19 maupun informasi lainnya, dan harus selalu menggunakan masker untuk melindungi diri dari bahaya Covid-19 serta selalu mencuci tangan benar untuk menjaga kebersihan. Abstract

The objective of the research is to find out the readability level of the texts in English textbook based on Fog Index (FI). This research was categorized as descriptive quantitative research. The object of this research was reading materials English textbook entitled English in Mind Second Edition by Cambridge University Press for tenth grade of Vocational Senior High School. FOG index was used to determine the readability level of the texts based on the average number of sentences and hard words (polysillabic). The finding of this research revealed that the readability of the texts in English in Mind second edition textbook by Cambridge University was easy based on FOG Index (FI) analysis result. Based on FOG Index (FI) analysis result, the percentage of level of readability of English in Mind textbook showed that there were 26 (68%) of texts were easy and 12 (32%) of texts were moderate. Overall, the readability of the texts in English in Mind second edition textbook by Cambridge University was dominantly easy for grade tenth of SMKN 3 Kota Bengkulu. It was suggested for the teachers or the readers to understand readability level of reading materials and know whether the reading materials given to their students are appropriate for them or not.

Abstract

Rhetorical factors in speech composition is an essential element, it is make speech organized and effective. However the most difficult part of speech in debate match is the speeches delivered by each other debater can be accepted logically and clearly both from the july and audience. The objectives of this research to find out the rhetorical factors in speech composition in building speech of debaters on novice grand final NUDC and for the subject of this research are deabters from novice grand final NUDC 2020 – 2021. Rhetorical factors in speech composition consists of 4 components, such as : coherence, unity, emphasis, ethical and inclusive of language. The result show that the debaters on novice grand final NUDC 2020 – 2021 used all component of rhetorical factors in speech, they delivered at the debate match. This implies that the rhetorical factor in speech composition is very important in speech to build strong and believable arguments, especially in developing the style of language in speech itself, it is suggested that in order to be able to make a good rhetorical in speech, so speech can be more organized and effective.

Abstract

The Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) is getting more and more important every day for both further study and career advancement. Accordingly, many educational institutions, both state-owned and private in Indonesia carry out innovative programs to increase their graduates' TOEFL scores. Universitas Muhammadiyah Bengkulu (UMB), as an educational institution is also carry out a program aiming to improve its graduates’ TOEFL score. The program is called as the TOEFL workshop for UMB students. This study is an evaluative study analyzing a program administered by UMB, TOEFL workshop for UMB students. The researchers used Stake Countenance Model as a method in the current study. The results of the study show that there is a contingency between antecedent, transaction, and outcome of the program of TOEFL workshop for UMB students.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to determine the effect of Read, Cover, Remember, and Retell (RCRR) Strategy on students’ reading comprehension. This current study was carried out by using quasi experimental method. The subjects of this research were 14 Eight semester students of English Study Program of UMB . The instrument used in this study was a reading comprehension test consisted of pre-test and post-test. Pre-test was given before the treatment and post-test was given after the treatment. The result of the study show that there is an increased scores of students who used RCRR Strategy. After conducting the measuremnet,  researchers found that T-count value was lower than T-table (1.1904 < 1.70562). However, the total score was 590 and mean score was 84.28 for experimental group, which was higher than the total score in the control group, 555 and mean score was 79.28. This indicate that RCRR has a significant effect on students reading comprehension skill.

Abstract

Test items or questions play an important role as a tool to measure the students’ ability in a process, like the process of education and learning. The objectives of this research are to find out the kinds of higher order thinking skill used by English teachers and to find out the dominant kinds of higher order thinking skill used by English teachers in designing test items at SMAN Argamakmur. This study used descriptive study which tries to potrait the use of Higher Order Thinking Skills in designing test items. This research used test items designed by English teachers in SMAN Argamakmur. The researcher asked permission to the teachers to copy the latest test items. The instruments of this research was observation checklist. In collecting the data, the researcher used the composition of higher order tinking skills. The data was collected based on the reading task on the test items designed by English teachers. There were two conclusions of this research; firts, the kinds of higher order thinking skill used by English teachers in designing test items at SMAN Argamakmur were analyzing, evaluating, and creating. Second, the dominant kind of higher order thinking skill used by English teachers in designing test items at SMAN Argamakmur was analyzing. Keywords : Higher Order Thinking Skills, Test Items
