Abstract

This research discusses figurative language in the novel "Let The Right One In. This research has two objectives (1) To find out what kinds of figurative language are found in the novel "Let The Right One In". (2) To find out what kind of figurative language is more dominant. This study used the descriptive qualitative method This related to the description of the data in the form of a conversation and narrative. Analysis using domain analysis from Spreadly and theory from Keraf. The results of this study indicate that there are seven types of figurative language found, namely, simile, metaphor, personification, allegory, epithet, synecdoche, and eponym. Meanwhile, the dominant figurative language used in the novel "Let The Right One In" is the simile. Keyword: Semantics, Novel, Figurative language, Let The Right One In.

Abstract

The Color Purple by Alice Walker is a fiction novel that talks about African- American woman. The Color Purple was published in 1982 in New York USA, and made into a film in 1985 won the Pulitzer Prize awards. Based on the novel, African American women whose were struggle in the face of oppression that is dominated by men that occurred in America. This study aims to answer two formulations of the problem, namely; to determine the forms of oppression over women occur in the novel and to find out how the struggle of women in the novel. This study used a theoretical approach of Black Feminism belongs to Barbara Smith who saw a literary work of the whole social and historical context in which literary works are created as concept of criticism used by activists of black feminist at the time. The researcher used qualitative method to get validation data. The results of this study indicate that the form of oppression on women character in this novel is very diverse. There are three forms of oppression which is reflected in the novel that physical oppression, verbal oppression, and relational oppression. Then there are two forms of struggle carried out by the character of women is a direct confrontation and sisterhood bonding. Forms of fight carried out by Sofia and Shug Avery are directly. Sofia indicated the battle confrontation was clearly seen as the empowerment of struggle carried out by Shug Every became the main inspiration for the influence of character a female character in the vicinity. In the next fight Celie inspired by Shug Every also fight and was followed by Mary Agnes. Then do not miss the fight carried out by Netty. Abstract

This research is entitled "An Analysis of Positive Politeness Strategies used in "UP" movie. It aims at finding the kinds of politeness strategies and context produced in "UP" movie. The researcher used qualitative research since the data engaged are displayed in the form of strings of words. The data were collected from a movie "UP" which was realesed in 2010. Analysis of this research is focused on the utterances produced by the character in Up movie. Using the theory of Brown and Levinson (1987), there are 15 strategies in positive politeness, they are 1) notice, attend to the hearer (his interest, wants, needs, goods); 2) exaggerate (interest, approval, sympathy with the hearer); 3) intensify interest to the hearer: 4) use in-group identity markers; 5) seek agreement; 6) avoid disagreement; 7)presuppose/ raise/ assert common ground; 8) joke; 9) assert or presuppose the speaker's knowledge and concern for the hearer's wants; 10) offer/promise; 11) be optimistic; 12) include both the speaker and the hearer in the activity; 13) give (or ask for) reasons; 14) assume or assert reciprocity; 15) and give gifts to the hearer (goods, sympathy, understanding, cooperation). The result shows that the character produced the highest number of positive politeness in the utterances that found in strategy 4: Use in group identity markers. Context of positive politeness strategy also using Brown and Levinson theory where 9 from 15 context theory found in the utterance. The result shows that the character produced the highest number of contexts of positive politeness in the utterances that found in give association clue context Keyword: Movie, Positive Politeness strategy and context, Utterances.

Abstract

Abstract The aims of the study is to analyze Non-Vocal Backchannels of the Indonesian Presidential Candidates on The Second Debate 2019. This research has two objectives: first, to identify Non-Vocal Backchannels that used by The Presidential Candidates on the second debate. Second, to analyze the function of Backchannels used by the presidential candidates on the second debate. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. It is concerned with the description of the data in the form of conversation from the presidential candidates’ debate based on Yule's theories of Backchannels and function of backchannels. Based on the obtained result, it can be concluded thatthe most dominant of non-vocal backchannels of the presidential candidates on the second debate is Eye Gaze and The most frequently performed function is Continuer and Acknowledgement. Abstract

This research paper aims to describe the linguistics form and the meaning of register in champion League News used by goal.com. Goal.com is a website where all about football is shared. This site is always post updated news about football, before updates, news of last match, and news of the player or the specific club. There are many new words created in football news. The type of research is descriptive qualitative. The object of this research is the register used in champions league news. The data are register words and phrases included in printed material used in goal.com. The data source is the news report of Real Madrid in Champions League. The researcher collects the news in goal.com, reads the news, and writes down the register words and phrases, and analyses the data In analyzing the data, the writer classifies the data into categories as the register, anafy7.es the data by identifying the linguistic form of the register, Identifying the differences between lexical and contextual meaning based on Larson's theory. Based on the analysis, the researcher finds that in linguistic form there are 98 data of noun, 25 data of verb, 10 data of adjective, I 04 data of compound word, 7 data of abbreviation, and 11 data of noun phrase, 7 verb phrase, and 4 adjective phrase and there are two types of meaning: 30 data of lexical meaning and 82 data of contextual meaning This means that the more frequently appear of linguistic forms are in compound word and meaning is in contextual meaning. Abstract

The lookup is a descriptive translation learn about focusing on the methods and ideology of translation offigure of speech used in the text of Srimad Bhagavatam into Indonesian. It departed from atranslation paradigm that considered Srimad Bhagavatam as a product, and the have an impact on of the strategies and ideology applied to the readability stage of figure of speech translation contained in Srimad Bhagavatam from English to Indonesian. Thisis a library study and the approach used in accumulating the statistics is observation, by reading the studied text carefully on the sentences that comprise discern of speech. To view the translation readability level, three informants are concerned to entire a questionnaire containing about the readability stage of translation. This study shows that the ideology held by way of the translator is domestication by means of applying communicative technique of translation on most sentences with parent of speech. Abstract

Literary theory is the systematic study of the nature of literature and of the method for analysing literary works. Literary Theory is an examination of a piece of literature which can be addressed to examine a single aspect of the work in its entirety By literary theory we assume not to the meaning of work of literature but to the theories that reveal what literary works can mean. Moreover creative writing focuses on writing from emotions and thoughts which tends to be expressive, imaginative, and literary. Any writing refers to individual expression as a social practice falls to this category. It is believed that creative writing cannot be formed as an acquaintance outside literary theory instead of one that is fashioned within. Abstract

This research aims to reveal: the types of speech acts used by the main character in “Ben 10’ the movie and the previous studies in speech act analysis for knowing the way of the directives of speech act appears. It employed descriptive qualitative research in the explaining of speech acts types used by the main character. There is still a lack of research about the analysis of speech act categories in cartoon movie or animation movie, it is substantial to be carried out. The finding of this research is the directives speech act is the most frequently in Ben-10 the movie with data 118 or 44,36% from a total of 266 or 100% of the whole data. Abstract

This research discusses psychological conflict using Anna Freud's Defense Mechanism theory in the short story “The Rocking Horse Winner”. This research has two objectives, namely to find out the defense mechanism and to find out the factors that cause the defense mechanism in the main character in the short story “The Rocking Horse Winner”. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method. This relates to the description of the data in the form of the utterances of the main character Paul in the short story. The analysis in this study using Spradley's analysis. The results of this study show that of the ten defense mechanisms, six were found, namely rationalization, displacement, repression, projection, denial, and identification. Neurotic anxiety and moral anxiety were found as two of the three factors causing defense mechanisms. In this study, the most common type of defense mechanism found is rationalization and neurotic anxiety is the dominant factor that causes the use of this defense mechanism by the main character

Abstract

This research discusses gender discrimination in the “Precious” movie. This research has two objectives. (1) To find the forms of gender discrimination in Precious movie. (2) To investigate the factors cause gender discrimination in the Precious movie. This study used descriptive qualitative method. This is related to data descriptions in the form of conversations and descriptions of actions in the his. The analysis in this research uses analysis from spreadlay and theory from Zulhayatin and Relawati. The research's findings demonstrate that 3 of the 5 forms of gender discrimination namely violence, stereotypes, and marginalization were discovered. Additionally, the rationality factor and the patriarchy factor are the two causes of the gender discrimination that Precious experienced in the “Precious” movie. Based on the research that has been completed, there are 7 data sentences or actions that contain gender discrimination experienced by the character Precious in the “Precious” movie. In accordance with the data, researcher found that 5 data were caused by patriarchy factors, and 2 data were caused by rationality factors.
