Abstract

AbstractThe students do online learning covid-19 pandemic, which makes them study remotely at home, where before the pandemic they did face-to-face learning. The pandemic brings many challenges for students that require students to try to get past the challenges of distance learning. This research was conducted to determine the efforts of students to face the challenges of online learning in English Education, Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu. This research was descriptive qualitative study. This research used a questionnaire as an instrument of the research (Barrot et al, 2021). They were distributed to 107 students of the English Education Study Program at Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu. The result of the research show that there are some of students’ efforts to face online learning challenges, namely: self-regulation challenges, technological literacy and competency challenges, student isolation challenges, technology adequacy challenges, technological complexity challenges, learning resource challenges, and learning environment challenges. Those seven types of challenges are often done by the students as this effort to face online learning challenges in pandemic Covid-19. Based on the results above, it can be concluded that the of students' efforts in online learning challenges is Technological Complexity. Where the highest result is 44% or 48 students often did that effort to face online learning challenges.Keywords: Students’ Effort, Online Learning, Challenges

Abstract

AbstractThe objective of this research is to find out anddescribe the lack of the rhetorical structure used byEnglish Students in writing the result & discussionsection in the Thesis academic year 2020 period 1. Thisstudy use qualitative research, and used descriptivequalitative. The result of this research, the englishstudents still lack in write there are: in backgroundinformation and summarising result. And thediscussion of this research the english students stilllack in write: interpreting result, comparing result, andecaluating result. This reserach suggested the studentscan used rhetorical structure based on Yang & Allison(2003) model to write of research results anddiscussion section. The reason are: First, this model isbetter than theses guidebook of FKIP. Second, thismodel contains: background information, reportingresult, summarising result. Abstract

AbstractOnline speaking learning is learning that is done indirectly and uses media as a mediator. This study was conducted to determine barriers to learning speaking online and determine the most dominant barriers. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. The researcher used a questionnaire as an instrument which was distributed to 24 English students as research subjects. After analyzing the data obtained, the researcher found 21 problems that became obstacles in learning speaking online. While the most dominant barriers found were learners psychological features with a percentage of 39.21%.Keywords: Speaking skill, Online Learning, Barriers, Covid-19A. Introduction

Abstract

AbstractThis research discusses gender inequality on black women characters in "Hidden Figures" Film. The objectives of this research are to find gender inequality and to show what factors that cause gender inequality in “Hidden Figures” film. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. This is related to the description of the data in the form of a conversation in film. Analysis in this research using analysis from spreadlay and theory from Fakih and Relawati. The results of this reseacrh indicate that there are two types of gender inequality found namely marginalization and subordination. In addition there are four factors that cause gender inequality in “Hidden Figures”film , namely the factor of public confidence in the myth, factor of rationality, factor of Patriarchy and Factor of Capitalist System.Keyword: Film, Gender Inequality, Factor, Hidden Figures

Abstract

Abstract Nowadays, the use of code mixing is easily found in the oralcommunication, especially in the daily communication amongteenagers who like to code and switch their language to show thatthey are modern. The objectives of this research are to find out typesof code mixing used by major characters of Layangan Putus tv seriesand to know the factors that cause the use of code mixing. This studyemployed a qualitative descriptive method as research design.Layangan Putus Tv Series was chosen as the object of this study. Inthis case, the researcher took the utterance from major characters(Kinan, Aris, and Lidya) in 10 episodes of the film as the source ofthe data of this research. The instrument used in this research wasobservation checklist. The checklist consisted of the types of codemixing based on Muysken (2000) theory. There were two findings ofthis research; First, there were three types of Code Mixing used bymajor characters of Layangan Putus TV Series. There were 113insertion, 108 alternation, and 9 congruent lexicalization. Second,there were maybe four factors cause the use of code mixing inLayangan Putus TV series, namely; the participants, the setting orsocial context of interaction, the topic, and the function ofconversation. As a consequence, the researcher recommends thatfuture researchers should make a study of the phenomenon of codemixingin the latest and best TV series and Movie produced byDirector from Indonesia. Abstract

Abstract Speech act is an action performed or conveyed by means of speech. The aims of this research is to analyze speech act used by three governors of Indonesia in the Mata Najwa Talk Show Episode “Kita Bisa Apa” Tiga Gubernur Ditantang Tiktok, Siapa Paling Jago?”. This research has two objectives : first, to analyze speech act used by three governors of Indonesia in the Mata Najwa Talk Show Episode “Kita Bisa Apa” Tiga Gubernur Ditantang Tiktok, Siapa Paling Jago?”, and to analyze the function of speech act used by three governors of Indonesia in the Mata Najwa Talk Show Episode “Kita Bisa Apa” Tiga Gubernur Ditantang Tiktok, Siapa Paling Jago?”. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. The description of the data is in the form of utterances and examined based on Austin theories of speech act. Based on the obtained result, it can be concluded that the three governors, Ganjar Pranowo, Anies Baswedan, and Ridwan Kamil applied three types of speech act (locutionary act, illocutionary act, perlocutionary act). Ganjar Pranowo and Anies Baswedan mostly used locutionary act, while Ridwan Kamil used illocutionary act the most. The least used speech act by three governors was perlocutionary act. While three of them did not employ commissive and declarative function, they only used representative, directive, and expressive function of speech act. Abstract

The title of this study is Slang Word Used in Movie “Ant-Man”. The aims of the study are to identify the types of slang and meaning conveyed in movie Ant-Man. The data of this study were collected from” Ant-Man” movie as the data source. The theories used in the study are theory proposed by Allan and Burridge (2006) entitled Forbidden words: Taboo and The Censoring of Language used to identify the types of slang word, and theory proposed by by Leech (1974) entitled Study of Meaning used to analyze the meanings conveyed in the movie. The documentation method is used to collect the data, and derive qualitative method is used to analyze the data. There were forty slangs either in the form of words or phrases that are analyzed based on theory mentioned above. There are five types of slang in theory of Allan and Burridge (2006) but only four types were found in the movie. Those are fresh and creative, imitative, flippant, acronym, and clipping. Flippant type was the most found in the data source. For the meaning, there were seven types of meaning based on the theory proposed by Leech (1974) but only six types were found in the movie. Those are conceptual meaning, connotative meaning, social meaning, collocative meaning, reflected meaning, and affective meaning. Affective meaning type is the most found in the data source. Abstract

This qualitative descriptive study intends to examine the equivalence technique in the English-Bahasa Indonesia translation of slang and profanity in the film Joker. The formal and dynamic equivalences concept proposed by Nida (1964) serves as the theoretical framework for this study. Prior to equivalence analysis, slang and curse words were identified. This study employed two concepts for identification: Yule's (1996) word formation processes and Finegan's (2004) lexical semantics. The investigation identified 24 swear words terms. And most of translation technique used in translating swear words is Literal, appearing 21 times from this research, it can be concluded that Joker the movie didn’t use a lot of swear words even though the main character is evil. Abstract

Social deixis usually can be found in series. So that, this study purposed to describe the kinds of social deixis and aims of social deixis in the series entitled Upin-Ipin Series. The writers analyzed this study by using theory of Stephen C. Levinson. In analyzing the data of this study, the writers used qualitative method. The findings of the analysis revealed that there were 34 utterances that containing social deixis found in the series Upin-Ipin Series. The writers found 68 styles of social deixis in the series Upin-Ipin Series, 28 styles of social deixis were categorized as kinds of social deixis and 28 styles of social deixis were categorized as the aims of social deixis. The writers found two kinds of social deixis, they were; 12 styles of social deixis in relational social deixis and 16 styles of social deixis in absolute social deixis. Besides the writers found, three aims of social deixis, they were; 10 styles of social deixis have categorized as to express politeness and respect, 9 styles of social deixis had categorized as to express intimacy, and 9 styles of social deixis had categorized as to identify authority. Abstract

In speaking activities, speakers not only communicate messages, but also develop social relationships with other speakers (speech companions). Based on Hymes' theory, this study focuses on the function of context in conversational discourse between close characters in the Harry Potter: The prisoners of Azkaban. The purpose of this study is to determine the role of context in conversational discourse between characters, as well as to analyses conversations between close characters based on hymes theory; from these conversations, it can be seen that paralinguistic elements are very helpful for understanding each other's illocutionary.
