Abstract

Grammar teaching has always been a controversial issue of language teaching, since the teaching technique seems tense and boring. Here the researcher’s focus is a way to learn grammar through rhymes and chants to young learners. The researcher presents a technique through Jazz Chants that involving the learners to identify and understand the grammatical point in content. Jazz Chants is a rhyme and repetition in a situational context based on everyday life situation. Each of the chant is accompanied by the target structure that indicates the specific focus of the material. The study is aimed at comparing the students’ grammar aspect through Jazz Chants and understanding the attitude of the students in teaching English grammar through Jazz Chants. The sample is the students of the sixth grade consisted of 50 students in SD IT Hidayatullah, Kota Bengkulu. The design of the study was mixed method design. The quantitative data were carried out from grammar test and the students’ attitude toward teaching English grammar. The qualitative data came from a learning log, an interview, and teacher’s journal. A pre-test and post-test design, 8 lesson plan, and an attitude questionnaire were applied in the study. Percentage, mean, standard deviation, and t-test were used to analyze the data quantitatively. The study findings were as follow: 1. The students’ English grammar ability after using Jazz chants were significantly higher than before their use. 2. Abstract

Poetry is a language that conveys something that is difficult to express and implies either expressed or implied. This aims as a material comparison between poetry writing techniques, both brainwriting techniques and ordinary writing techniques that are tested in class A at MuhammadiyahUniversity of bengkulu .This method used experimental methods. Systematic, logical, and meticulous research in controlling condition based on the results of observations of 24 respondents in class A  the results of Brainwriting technique gives good impact to student to increase the accuracy of writing poetry more free and could devote more creative ideas in writing poetry.   Keywords: brainwriting, technique, poetry,  Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu

Abstract

This thesis examines the linguistic features of women’s speech used by men in characters from 2016 British-American comedy and horror movie directed by Burr Steers and written by Seth Grahame-Smith and Jane Austen entitled Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. The objectives of this research can be further detailed as the following; (1) to find the linguistic features of women’s speech used by men in characters Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016) movie, (2) to find the functions of the linguistic features of women’s speech used by men in characters Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016) movie and (3) to find the kind of social manners which became the background for the men to use linguistic features of women’s speech in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016) movie. With descriptive qualitative as the methodology, the researcher divide activity into three stages: first analyze linguistic features of women’s speech using theory from Lakoff (2004). Second, analyze the function of linguistic features of women’s speech using theory by Holmes (2001). Third, analyze social manners using the theory by Hoppe (2000). After the researcher analyzed data that is collected from sentence, phrase and word used by men characters in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (20016) movie, the researcher conclude that the dominant kind of linguistic features of women’s speech used by men characters is hypercorrect grammar. And the function that dominantly used is function to strengthen (booster devices). And the dominant social manners which became the background for men to use linguistic features of women’s speech is men were dominant. Abstract

Human are social creatures because they interact and communicate a language that they can understand each other. Until they can create social communities. In human life there are many kinds of mysterious in their surrounding such as sign, symbol, word or sentences that had meaning inside. The purpose of this research to describe how the semiotics applied in Maulana Rumi’s poems and to know the meanings of Maulana Rumi’s poems viewed from semiotics theory. The researcher used qualitative research method to analysis the data. The data analyzed  of 10 poems, the titles are, the spirit and body, the spirit ruby, the great wagon, love is the way massagers, Imra’u’L’QAYS, no flag, eyes, the death of Saladin, the many wines & quietness. The result of analyzed data based on applied five codes as follow, hermeneutic code, proareitic code, semantic code, symbol code & culture code. These poems full of the anigma and meanings. Therefore, the anigma and was arranged the beauty words in each stanza those made Rumi’s poems being more wealth of art.   Keywords: Maulana Rumi, poems, semiotics, universal loves

Abstract

In I am Number Four novel by James Frey and Jobie Hughes, there is a main character named John Smith. He is 15 years old and at his age, he is in puberity phase which his characters are influenced by people around him. This research was conducted using psychosocial study. The purposes of this study are to analyze what the factors that influence John Smith’s characters and what the psychosocial problems that emerge in the development of John Smith’s character. The method used was qualitative descriptive method. Data were collected by using content analysis techniques. Based on the findings, that each character of John Smith is influenced by biological factor, familial factor and cultural and situational factor. The character of the biological factor is the genetic character that john smith gets from his grandfather. The character of the familial factor is a character that he imitates from Henri as his adoptive father. The last is the character of cultural and situational factor, this is a character that he gets through the interaction with the people around him and the situation he faces. The psychosocial problems that emerge in the development of John Smith’s character are the emotional problems that he feels, those are; fear, temprament and melancholic.   Keywords: Psychosocial, Character, I Am Number Four Novel.

Abstract

The aims of the study are to know how many diphthongs and long vowels that can be mastered by the students at Aliyah Kindergarten and to investigate the difficulties in mastering diphthongs and long vowels experienced by the students at Aliyah Kindergarten. This research is descriptive qualitative research where the researcher collects the data observation, recording, taking notes, and analyzing based on Abdul Chaer (2003). Based on the obtained result, it can be concluded that there are 3 words of diphthongs that can be mastered by the students such as five, phone and here, while there are 2 words of diphthongs that are difficult to say, such as are grape and pear. Then, where are 3 word long vowels can be mastered by the students such as door, bee, and zoo, while the most difficult words spoken by the students are car and bird.   Keywords: Diphthongs, Long Vowels, Phonology, Kindergarten.

Abstract

The aims of the study is to analyze the Asperger syndrome in Alan Turing character on The Imitation Game film. This research has two objectives: first, to describe the characteristic of the Asperger Syndrome in Alan Turing character on The Imitation Game film. Second, to reveal the verbal language problems of the Asperger Syndrome in Alan Turing character on The Imitation Game film. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. It is concerned with the description of the data in the form of conversation on The Imitation Game film based on Tony Attwood theories of characteristic and verbal language problems of Asperger syndrome. Based on the obtained result, it can be concluded that Asperger Syndrome is the dominant characteristic of Alan Turing character in The Imitation Game film namely the difficulties communication and the controlling of emotions. While the minimal characteristics are difficulties a making friends and often teased by other children. Abstract

The aims of this research are: 1) to know the speech functions manifested in English teachers’ instruction at MTs Pancasila Kota Bengkulu, and 2) to infer the dominant speech function used by English teachers at MTs Pancasila Kota Bengkulu. The design of this research is qualitative by applying descriptive method. The subjects of this research are two English teachers in MTs Pancasila Kota Bengkulu. The data was collected using recording and observation techniques. Besides that, the procedure of data analysis are; data reduction, data display, drawing conclusion and verification. All of the data that have classified was interpreted concerned with the description of the situation. The result of this research showed that: 1) the speech functions manifested in English teachers’ instruction at MTs Pancasila Kota Bengkulu were about 102 of speech function that summarized into 48 utterances, and 2) the dominant speech function used by English teachers at MTs Pancasila Kota Bengkulu is directive function, which are 61% utterances. Finally, in great expectation by applying this research data analysis, English teacher can see the benefits and understand how to use the speech function in the teaching-learning process.   Keywords: Speech Function, Teachers’ Instruction

Abstract

This thesis studied about Comparative Study of Novel and Film of Harry Potter The Deathly Hallows. The objectives of this research are to find out the similarities data and the differences data in intrinsic elements of both literary works. This research used theory of  Eneste (1991) to analysis the reduction, addition, and modification in ecranisation study. This research used descriptive qualitative, the data collected from the intrinsic elements of novel and film. In collecting data, the researcher used note taking as the instrument to find out the reduction, addition, and modification of novel into film. In this research, the researcher found that there were 15.49% in plot data, in character 62.97% data, in setting 19.71% data and point of view 2.81% data or 76.34% in total data was similar. While in differences there are 22 data separated in reduction 63.63% data, in addition 23.27%% data and in modification 13.63% data was found. In addition, the researcher found that reduction, addition and modification influenced to the change of some intrinsic elements in both of fiction.   Keywords: Comparative Study, Novel, Film, Ecranisation.

Abstract

Swearing is an action doing by people contain with rude and harsh  words as the expression of stong emotion. This study aimed to describe the swearwords that used by King George VI in King’s Speech film. This is a historical film about King George VI and his daily life with many problems that make him take it especially in empire. The purposes of this study were: (1) to find out the kinds of swearwords that used by the King George VI (2) to know the factors that made him used swearwords (3) to analyze the situation when he used swearwords. The data were collected through the transcript of King’s Speech film. Spradley’s domain analysis, taxonomic analysis, componential analysis were used for analyzing the data in this research. The research finding showed that: (1) The highest swearwords that used by the King George VI in King’s Speech film are death term and the lowest are animal and mother in law term (2) The most factor that made him used swearwords are anger and then the lowest factor is humor. (3) Swearing as the way of the King to express his strong emotion by used rude words. And then, swearwords are only used by the King in certain situation and place such as in his physician’s building.                                            Keywords: Swearwords, King George VI, King’s Speech film.
