Jurnal Studi Agama dan Masyarakat (JSAM) is an academic journal, publishing two issues per year (June and December). JSAM is published by Lembaga Penelitian dan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat of Institut Agama Islam Negeri (IAIN) Palangka Raya, Indonesia. This journal seeks to provide a venue for sharing new empirical research and theoretical analysis of intersections between religion and societies. JSAM publishes original works that contribute to scientific discussion of the relationship between Islam and societies. The journal’s primary focus is on contemporary issues of Islam and culture, politics, economics, law, communication, and history within Indonesian contexts such as local wisdom, multiculturalism and pluralism. However, works on the issues of world religions and global societies are welcome.

Abstract

This article was aimed to discuss the quality of test in textbook, specifically addressing: 1) the type of test used, 2) the level of Blooms taxonomy and 3) the quality of tests which included (a) the objective test, and (b) the subjective test. The method used in this research was the incorporation of quantitative approach and qualitative approach. Textbook used in this study was “Progress A Contextual Approach to Learning English (An English Textbook for Senior High School)”. This textbook was based on Education Unit Level Curriculum/SBC (School Based Curriculum). This book was used on the high school level. The result of the study were as follows: 1) there were two types of test used in the textbook: objective and subjective tests, 2) there were two levels of Bloom’s taxonomy to measure the test: knowledge and comprehension, 3) as for the quality of test, (a) the objective test which were multiple choice items and true-false items were in category of good, whereas matching items was found in category of poor and (b) the subjective test which were Yes No Question, WH Question, and completion items included into category of poor.

Abstract

Value on the philosophical view was considered as propitious. The measurements were ethics and morality. Islam has a different statement, that it viewed value as something or some cases as beneficence. There was value system in family, society, culture, and religion. Idealist community, realist community, and pragmatic community had a different opinion to determine the hierarchy of value. All of religions had a universal value. The value system in Islam, including Islamic education, was based on the normative category and law standard. All of them were based on al-Qur’an and Hadith..

Abstract

The problems of the study were: 1) the role of Darussalam Mosque in Palangka Raya, 2) the problems in maximizing the role of Darussalam Mosque in Palangka Raya, and 3) the implementation solutions of the role of Darussalam Mosque in Palangka Raya.The study used descriptive qualitative. The methods applied in the study covered: a) participatory observation, b) in-depth interview, and c) documentation. The data analysis applied in the study covered: a) data collection, b) data reduction, c) data display, and d) drawing conclusion and verification.  The results of the study could be described as follows: 1) the Palangka Raya Darussalam Mosque was functioned for education and da’wa. This could be seen from education activities and da’wa such as the 7-minute Islamic preaching during the Ramadhan, Islamic teaching for Muslim female, kindergarten and Qur’anic education school (TK-TPA), the Islamic preaching for Friday prayers and Holy days (the Fitri and Adha days), and the celebration of Islamic Great Days (PHBI). 2) As for social functions, it could be seen in wedding ceremony, witnessing to embrace Islam for new Muslim followers (muallaf), meeting for mosque board members, accepting the visiting of guests both from the government officers and Islamic mass organization, giving aids for the poor through iftar activity, distributing the zakat in the Fitri days, and distributing meat at the Adha days. 3) The mosque was also functioned as art and culture covering the Maulid Habsyi activity, MTQ (Qur’anic Reciting Competition), the Anak Saleh festivals, religious competitions, boy scouting for TK-TPA students around Palangka Raya.

Abstract

This study departed from two problems: 1) the religious behavior of boarding students of State Islamic College (STAIN) Palangka Raya and 2) the influence of religion on social life of boarding students of State Islamic College (STAIN) Palangka Raya. The research data was obtained by using field research and library research. After getting all of information which the writer had collected in the field, the data was processed quantitatively by using reflective-systematic method. The results of this study reflected that religious behavior boarding students of State Islamic College (STAIN) Palangka Raya positive behavior, this could be seen from their ethusiasm in carrying out good worship prayer, worshipping in the month of Ramadhan such as tarawih prayer and reciting the Quran, and commemorating the great days of Islam actively. Meanwhile the influence of religion in social life behavior was seen in their life peacefulness, no worries, open and commodious feelings, feeling alive and friendly towards each other or others in general, morale in carrying out activities, and realizing the nature and human mind that the events in human life did not happen automatically.

Abstract

 Al-Qur’an, as the guidance of muslim in all age, included all aspects of life in it. It did not only talk about ritual teachings, but it also gave the followers the comprehensive guidance of how to interact with other people in social life and business and economic life. This article was aimed to explore Qur’anic terms, ethics, and principles in relation to business and economic issue. According to this research, these economic and business terms were mentioned frequently in different suras: al-bay’i, al-riba’, al-tijarah, al-adl, al-qisth, al-rizq, al-mal, etc. Based on the terms, the fundamental ethics, and the principles of Qur’an in business and economy, there were integration (tawhid), balance, justice, mutual trust and advantage, honesty, prime service, togetherness, social care and responsibility, hygiene and legality.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe how the students wrote descriptive paragraph through language learning strategies by using pictures at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Palangka Raya.The approach used in this study was qualitative. To collect the data, this study used observation, interview, and documentation technique. The subjects were 12 eleventh grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah I Palangka Raya. They were selected based on the highest and lowest scores.The findings of this study were: first, the language learning strategies used by successful students in writing descriptive paragraph using the pictures were 1) cognitive strategies as in using resources for receiving and sending messages, translating, and taking notes, 2) compensation strategies as in selecting the topic and coining words, and 3) affective strategies as in making positive statements. Second, the language learning strategies used by unsuccessful students in writing descriptive paragraph using the pictures were 1) cognitive strategies as in using resources for receiving and sending messages, translating, taking notes, and summarizing, 2) compensation strategies as in selecting the topic and coining words, 3) affective strategies as in making positive statements, and 4) social strategies as in asking for correction and cooperative with peers.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to analyze and describe the difficulty level, the item discrimination, the validity, and the reliability of the test items in Madrasah Ibtidaiyah City Cluster II on subjects of Quran Hadith, Morals Aqeedah, Fiqh, Arabic, and SKI in Academic Year of 2010/2011 in Palangka Raya.This study used descriptive quantitative approach. The technique that was used for data collection was documentation technique in the form of exam questions and students’ answer sheets. Meanwhile the technique for data analysis used statistical analysis that consisted of formulas of difficulty level item, item discrimination, validity, and reliability of the test items.The results of the study showed that: (1) the difficulty level on Quran Hadith test items was eligible which there were 6 items found, Morals Aqeedah test items had no difficulty level that met the criteria of good items, as for Fiqh test items, there were 6 items that included criteria for difficulty level of good items, and the last were Arabic test items that had 17 good items which met the criteria. (2) The item discrimination that met the criteria for Quran Hadith were 11 items, Morals Aqeedah were 3 items, Fiqh were not found, Arabic and SKI were only 1 item found. (3) From 50 test items, most of the items on the 5 subjects met the criteria of validity as Quran Hadith had 47 valid items, Morals Aqeedah had 29, Fiqh had 46, Arabic had 47, and SKI had 45. (4) Correlation index for reliability showed that Quran Hadith, Fiqh, Arabic, and SKI included in reliable category, whereas only Morals Aqeedah did not
