Abstract

This study was designed to develop appropriate listening materials based on the needs of users namely the teachers and the students of the English Department of IAIN Palangka Raya. The Research and Development (R&D) design was applied in this study. The research subjects were four listening instructors and the first-semester students (freshmen) who encountered fourteen meetings of this on-going semester. The findings showed that (1) the stages of the listening materials development such as needs survey, developing materials, expert and instructors validation, revision, try out of materials, revision, and final product; (2) the product is in the form of compact disc recorded materials, an instructor’s guide, and a students’ worksheet; (3) the product consists of 14 units for semester 1; (4) the criteria for selecting materials are based on the existing syllabus and the criteria such as language, content, style of delivery, length, speed of delivery, attractiveness, practicality, level of difficulty and effectiveness; (5) the materials are appropriate  for the students since they are relevant to the students’ need, interest, and level of  students’ English ability; and (6) the listening activities can improve the students’ motivation to learn English.

Abstract

This study aimed to portray how a school culture contributed to the learner success factors in e-learning in the middle school level. The ethnographic case study design was applied to explore the school culture and the e-learning success factors more deeply and holistically. The data were collected through observations and in-depth interviews. The cross-case analysis was used to interpret the data. The subjects of the study were four students who won in the national e-learning competition and the setting of the institution was in SMP Tentara Genie Pelajar (TGP) in Malang. The fundamental finding of the study, that might not be found in other research, was that the high-academic performance culture of this school gave an indirect contribution to the students’ e-learning success factors, such as the students’ motivation, the students’ e-learning self-efficacy, the students’ prior knowledge on the e-learning technical competency, and the students’ interaction and collaboration. This study gave a big implication because an ethnographic case study on the e-learning critical success factors might be never done in Indonesia before.

Abstract

Information and Communication Technology is now becoming an essential part of everyday life of most people in the world. This paper analysed the main functionalities and tools available in the Moodle platform and their use through lecturer’s perspectives at English Department of IAIN Palangka Raya. This  study belongs to descriptive qualitative research. In the present study, teachers are expected to implement the Moodle platform of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) in EFL classes, and make the Moodle platform of ICT becoming a complement to conventional teaching in EFL classrooms, especially when developing listening, reading and writing skills in English. The results showed that the Moodle platform contains some of the main tools of the standard Moodle platform like assignments, chats, forums, news and quiz/survey. The most the students purposes of the use of the Moodle platform were ‘download materials’, ‘news’ and ‘deliver assignments’, and the most used information materials are ‘texts’ and ‘slides’.

Abstract

This paper, first of three research parts, attempts to describe the challenges English Letters at IAIN (Institut Agama Islam Negeri/State Islamic Institute) Surakarta faced in implementing gamification for technopreneurial purposes in regard to the transformation of a creative writing class into a ludic writing class, a gamification infused writing class. The challenges revealed are story-game script adaptation, integration portion, and monetization. Specific problems occur on each challenge. Story-game script adaptation exposes three problems namely (1) conditional branching system (2) visualization (3) copyrighted material issues (4) and writing mechanics adaptation. Integration portion challenge displays a problem on the insufficient alloted time for gamifying the creative writing class. Monetization challenge indicates three problems namely (1) the inexistence of monetization team, (2) the inexistence of institutional regulation for monetization management by study programs, (3) responses to gaming trends. Responding to these problems, solutions specifically designed based on the nature of the problems are implemented.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the English National Final Examination for Junior High School. Validity and reliability are the two kinds of characteristics of a good test which are concerned. Since the five packages of the test are the same in content and only different on the placement of the items, so it is considered to take only one package becomes sample. This study was analyzed by using the descriptive method. Content validity was analyzed by comparing the materials in the syllabus to the items of the test, and construct validity was analyzed by comparing the indicators in the syllabus to the items of the test. While the reliability was analyzed by using Kuder-Richardson Formula (KR20). The result of the study shows that the English National Final Examination for Junior High School was valid and reliable. The content validity shows 100% valid, and the construct validity shows 100% valid. While the reliability shows coefficient 0.89, and it is reliable. So, the English National Final Examination for Junior High School has fulfilled the characteristics of a good test.

Abstract

This study was a research and development (R&D) which is basically aimed at developing English instructional materials based on School-based Curriculum for the first-year students of MAN Model Palangka Raya. This study involved: need analysis, reference study, material development, expert validation, try out (empirical validation), and revision. The data were gathered through observation, questionnaires, interview, and validation technique.  The result of the need analysis shows that the students are in need of English instructional materials relevant to their major content needs and school characteristics. However, the existing English instructional materials used by the teachers and the first-grade students of MAN Model Palangka Raya as a senior high school with Islamic feature still served from available published course books which are too general and still do not reflect the need of the students and particular characteristics of the school. English instructional materials developed in this study is intended to develop English instructional materials which could provide a set of instructional materials to accomodate the Islamic characteristics and the needs of the first-year students of MAN Model Palangka Raya. For the purpose, the materials were adopted and adapted from some Islamic textbooks and Islamic reading websites.

Abstract

This study was aimed at investigating the difficulties and problems faced by non-English major lecturers when they were taking a part in English discussion. This study was a qualitative descriptive research involving 10 non-English major lecturers who took a part in a twice-a-week discussion so-called English Corner. To collect the data, in-depth interview and observation were used. The collected data were analyzed by using Miles and Huberman’s interactive data analysis data model consisting of data reduction, data display and data verifying. The result of the study showed that those barriers could be classified into three problems namely socio-cultural, linguistic and interpersonal problems. The found barriers were expected to be a consideration to find out the solution to make the betterment of English learning among lecturers with the non-English background of study.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate foreign language reading strategy use of a group of intermediate level adult Turkish EFL learners. The participants of the study were 87 Turkish first-year university students who were taking intermediate level English courses at a state university in Turkey. The main instrument of the study was a reading strategies survey which consisted of 30 items with three sub-scales: global or metacognitive reading strategies, problem-solving or cognitive reading strategies, and support reading strategies. Semi-structured interviews were also conducted to support the quantitative data. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation, frequencies, percentages) and one-way ANOVA with repeated measures. As for the analysis of the qualitative data, tape-recorded interviews were first transcribed and then analyzed by grouping each interviewee’s response according to the sub-scales of the survey. Results of the study indicated that intermediate-level adult Turkish EFL learners show the moderate overall use of reading strategies; problem-solving strategies are the most favored strategies, and they are followed by global reading strategies and supplementary reading strategies.

Abstract

This study focuses on the way of parents involving themselves in supporting their children learn English. In order to encourage children to learn better as English language learners, some parents send their children to have a continual program in non-formal institutions after schooling time. A common reason is that parents have the low capability in training their children to speak English or at least utter some meaningful words or phrases. Small scale survey by using open and closed-ended questionnaire was conducted among respondents from two elementary schools in Palangka Raya, Indonesia. They were, first, parents whose children learn English formally in SDIT Al-Furqan Palangka Raya and MIN Langkai Palangka Raya and take English course privately at home or courses center, and, second, the children as students. The questionnaires are focused on the students’ attitude and motivation towards learning English and parents’ opinions and involvement in learning the process, mainly practicing English at home. The result offers teachers some important points to consider in the teaching of English, especially the way to work with children and to build a positive relationship with parents in the regard of better learning.

Abstract

This study is intended to describe the quality of writing self-efficacy scale when it was applied in foreign language context. The design used is Correlational analysis by using Cronbach Alpha statistical tool. The participants of the study were 55 students of English Education Study program of STKIP PGRI Pasuruan who joined Writing II course and who were randomly chosen to fill out the questionnaire. The data were collected from 10 to 11 September 2014. The result of the study shows that the reliability is r = .785, lower than the reliability claimed by the maker (r = .9249). The possible cause of the reliability difference is discussed as well as the recommendation for future researchers.
