Abstract

The increasing food demand coupled with declining water availability meant for food production cause further concerns towards food security due to increasing numbers of the world’s population. System of Rice Intensification (SRI) known as a relevant innovation and has emerge as an alternative to traditional way of flooded rice cultivation and is showing great promise to deal with the problems of water scarcity and low yield. Ithas been introduced to Malaysia in 2009 by Norman Uphoff a renowned SRI researcher. Since SRI just recently introduced to the country, thus the aims of this paper is to determine the farmers’ awareness and perception of SRI practices in their rice cultivation. A survey was conducted in February, 2012 in North-West Selangor district. Using a simple random sampling technique, 111 paddy farmers were selected and interviewed via a structured questionnaire. The results showed that most of the respondents (88%) are aware about the existence of SRI in their area. Further analysis using principal component analysis revealed two factors namely low cost of production and sustainable farming that collectively described farmer’s perception towards SRI practices. It shows that SRI covered both economic and environmental aspects of rice cultivation and it should be adopted by all paddy farmers in Malaysia to overcome the issues of food security and water crisis.

Qualitative method is used in this research. The data collection is completed by using triangulation including non-participant observation, interview in depth, and documentation. The approach used is a case study that is to study the role of social capital in improving the dynamics of the Orange farmer group Sidomulyo IV, Sidomulyo village, Umbulsari subdistrict, Jember regency. The study results show that the members’ trust toward the farmer group Sidomulyo IV motivates their members to work together and to actively participate in the community’s activities to achieve their goals, so that their group becomes more dynamic. Cooperation creates the norms for the farmer group including the meeting schedule, the cash collection, the facility utilization, government help administration, and pest and disease management. It also builds social networks to fulfill the members’ needs involving the official kiosks of production utilities, gapoktan (farmer group alliance), government, Orange traders, and Hippa (association of waterusing farmers). Counseling activity through SL program (field school) also can increase farmer group’s social capital.

Abstract

Aedes aegypti L. is a species of mosquito that carries the dengue virus causes dengue fever. The way to solve the disease is still focused on synthesis larvacides which have a negative impact on the environment, it needs to be replaced with natural larvicides that are environmentally friendly. Annona squamosa L. seeds extract contains annonain and squomacin. Terminalia catappa L. leaf extract contains quinone, saponin, flavonoid and tannin. Acacia nilotica L. leaf extract contains terpenoid, saponin, flavonoid and tannin. This research aims to determine The toxicity of seeds extract of A. Squamosa, leaves extract of T. Catappa, and Leaves extract of A. nilotica on the mortality of Ae. aegypti. The method used in this research was complete randomized design using four replications. Concentration used 5, 10, 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 ppm for the seeds extract of A. Squamosa, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300 and 350 ppm for the leaf extract of T. catappa, and 80, 120, 180, 240, 300, 350 and 400 ppm for the leaf extract of A. nilotica. The data were analyzed using probit analysis to determine the LC50. The result showed LC50 is 109.43 ppm for A. Squamosa seeds extract, LC50 is 171.65 ppm for T. catappa and LC50 is 203.63 ppm for A. nilotica. This result showed the biggest toxicity is seeds extract of A. Squamosa.

Abstract

Fresh water algae such as Hydrodictyon sp.and Oedogonium sp. is common and have wide deployment in Indonesia. Unfortunately, these algae is not widely used by the people except for fish food by the people. In this study, we investigated these algae for synthesizing silver nanoparticle (AgNPs). The AgNPs were prepared by the reaction of 1 mM silver nitrate and aqueous extract of Hydrodictyon sp.and Oedogonium sp. The AgNPs were characterized by spectrophotometer and XRD. From this study, it has been concluded that fresh water algae Hydrodictyon sp.and Oedogonium sp .could be materials for producing AgNPs but it was still not perfectly.

Abstract

The sequence and duration of mating behaviour Crocidolomia pavonana were observed and investigated by using ethogram time budgets. This research was conducted in the dark hours from 18:00 pm to 06.00 am. The results showed that C. pavonana mating behaviour consists of calling behaviour , courtship behaviour, copulation and oviposition behaviour. Behaviour of copulation was dominated among other behaviour. It took about 48% of on all mating steps behaviour. However, the frequency of the calling leaded by 70.8 times among other behaviour.

Abstract

This research was conducted to find out how the protein and water content ten variations of the feed cassapro of yeast tape. This research was conducted in March-May 2016. The results showed manufacture of tapioca pulp and fish flour has increased very high protein after fermentation with yeast tape. Ten variations of feed cassapro of yeast tape according to the highest order as follows: variations 10, protein content of 66.12%; variation 9, protein content of 59.16%; variation 8, protein content of 67.54%; variation 7, protein content of 36.78%; variations 6, protein content of 38.14%; variation 5, protein content of 33.37%; variation 4, protein content of 26.82% variation 3, protein content of 24.76%; variation 2, protein content of 17.81%; the first variation, protein content of 68.63%. From the sequence can generally be seen that the higher the protein content if mixed fish flour higher. Although there are exceptions, namely the treatment of mixtures or variations first, seventh and ninth. It can be concluded that: the highest protein content of 66.12% was found in 10% variation cassapro blended with 90% fish flour and protein content of 17.81% is lowest that is a variation of 90% and 10% cassapro and fish flour. While most high water content is 17, 23% are on a variation of 80% and 20% tapioca pulp fish flour and the lowest water content is 6, 33% are on a variation of 10% tapioca pulp and 90% fish flour.
