Abstract

This research aimed to seek the light on how the advisors made a use of feedback during supervisory panel and find out how different ways and types of feedback impacted on student-writers’ thesis outcomes. Qualitative study was applied by involving three tenured lecturers at College of Islamic Studies, in Java as the research subjects. Two data collection techniques were applied, such as interview and documentation, to trace evidence on what types of feedback used, how students noticed, and how they impacted on subsequent drafts. This study revealed that indirect feedback using error codes and commentary was the most frequent form used during the advisory session. However, the mere use of feedback could only serve a short-term impact on the development of writing, and even it seemed only to spoon-feed them which could create burdens in writing. It was quite evident that engaging them in such self-regulated and interdependence group works, through problem-solving discussion and peer review, was much worthier as compared to only ask them to process the feedback themselves.

Abstract

This study aims to discuss how teaching and learning activities were carried out by using Genre based Approach in teaching writing descriptive text at junior high school. This study was conducted in the classroom of VII-1. Therefore, the appropriate design was qualitative research design. The subject of the study was the English teacher. To collect data, the researcher used observation and interview. The finding of the study described that the teaching and learning activities that were carried out by the teacher fulfilled the basic competencies. The teacher carried out the opening teaching activities by greeting, asking the students’ preparation during the lesson, checking the student’s attendance list, and informing the learning objective. The teacher carried out the main teaching activities by informing about how to write a descriptive text, giving, and asking opinions, eliciting the students’ understanding, prompting and directing to do exercises. The teacher carried out the closing teaching activities by directing the student to continue at home and eliciting the students’ reflection of what they could learn at that time.

Abstract

To a certain extent, a structural study is good enough to comprehend the very substance of a literary work. Given the above thesis, the researcher attempted to conduct a structural research on Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry (ROTHMC), an African-American novel, using actantial and functional structure analysis. This study aimed at comprehending the basic framework of the story that leads to the revelation of the plot and relations between characters, which indicated the African-American protagonist’s struggle to challenge white supremacy. Method used in the research was descriptive qualitative. Results found that the protagonist was David Logan, an African-American independent farmer that had an ambition to free African-American community from white people’s repressions. It was also found that the ambition and dream of David Logan about African-American freedom and independence and his awareness on the repression toward African-American people (Sender) has made him struggled to make African-American or African-American become a free race with dignity in the United States, where land and other things at the time was dominated by White people. Meanwhile, the functional analysis showed the plot structure of ROTHMC, which was centered on the struggles of David Logan and the family to challenge white supremacy.

Abstract

In reading, it is vital for readers to develop decoding to the extent where each word is recognized automatically. Once this happens, they will have the necessary attention to focus on the sense or meaning of the text. This study investigated adult ESL learners’ reading rate and its relationship with comprehension. This study also examined possible differences in the reading rate in terms of gender and academic semester. Its respondents were 210 Diploma students from one of the universities in Malaysia. Data were collected through Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) Assessment and Reading Comprehension Test. Jameson’s (2005) Reading Rate Formula and Levels of Reading Rate for College Readers were used to examine respondents’ reading rate. All data were coded and computer-scored using the Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) programme. This study revealed that 106 respondents were Excellent College Readers while the rest ranged from Strong College Readers to Good General Readers. It was also discovered that females performed better than males in reading rate and Semester 3 respondents’ reading rate was better than those in Semester 1. The correlation test indicated positive relationship between reading rate and comprehension.

Abstract

English for specific purposes (ESP) have different needs of English language use. These needs will be the fundamental indicators to develop appropriate ESP syllabus. In order to find those needs, a need analysis research is necessary to conduct. This qualitative study addresses the result of ESP needs analysis for 95 Informatics Engineering of Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo students. Brief reviews of ESP, needs analysis, and current learners’ situation of ESP classroom for Informatics Engineering are described as theoretical frameworks. A needs analysis questionnaire is utilized as an approach to find specific needs and to evaluate the current class situation. The results address 10 areas of English language use for Informatics Engineering major.

Abstract

Vegotesky theory is a paramount for the vocabulary development with its multidimensional approach, which has the impact on the cognitive affective contextual aspects and social interaction.Socio-cultural theory(SCT) is the mental development of specific sphere human. It also concerns mediation and the different kinds of mediation tools adopted and valued by society.This paper highlighted that learning as a mediated process in social in origin and then becomes individual as a result of linguistically mediated interaction between the child and more experienced members of the society including parents, teachers, and peers. The relation of mediation of SCT and environment is to enhance vocabulary development in teaching EFL students. It also helps EFL students to use the target language in their daily life .With the help of this theory, the students can master vocabulary and improve their language.This theory focuses on the interaction with the students and shows the social environment. It links the learners with the trainer, if a child/student gets a guidance in an appropriate way he/she can learn more and can enhance his/her capacity of learning.This study tried to look at the influence of SCT on learning and teaching vocabulary. Consequently, This study recommends the use of the SCT while teaching EFL Libyan learners to enhance English language vocabulary.

Abstract

Proper Teacher Talk (TT) used in the EFL classroom contributes to the effective communication in TEFL. Teachers who are expected to implement proper and effective teacher talk are apparently seeing this as one of the most complicated elements to be appropriately integrated in EFL class due to the different context between target language and first language and also the excessive target language exposure that is given by English teacher to the students as one of authentic learning process in the classroom. Many research focus on researching effective TT strategy in general EFL classroom, however, there is ony limited number of them that focuses on researching this concept in Islamic classroom with its Islamic culture, Islamic learners and Islamic situations. This descriptive qualitative study discussed and proposed the effective teacher talks in supporting the success of teaching english as a foreign language classroom in Islamic context. This article had anaysed the interview result from 7 English-Islamic lecturers in Islamic Broadcasting and Communication Learners (KPI) major and used TT features which later focussed on its ammount, diction and questioning type under SLA theory. This article aims to explain why and what types of language of the proper communication style and strategies should be applied by the English lecturers in Islamic higher education for having the effective teacher talk to English-Islamic learners, specifically to Islamic Broadcasting and Communication Learners, that could contribute to a professional development in English Language Teaching.

Abstract

This research compared the effects of two types of instruction: Processing Instruction (PI) and Meaning-based Output Instruction (MOI) on the interpretation and production of English passive structures. Ninety EFL intermediate tertiary level female students (PI group= 30, MOI group= 30 and control group = 30) participated in this study. The instruments were a proficiency test, a test to assess English passive structures and two instructional materials (PI and MOI). The data were analyzed by running one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and mixed between-within ANOVA. The study indicated the effectiveness of PI and MOI on English passive structures. PI had considerable enhancement on interpretation tasks all the time. It supported the use of PI rather than the use of traditional instructions in which mechanical components were emphasized. Also, the PI and MOI had long term effects on the interpretation and production of English passive sentences. This study supported the use of PI and MOI rather than the use of traditional instruction (TI) in EFL settings. The implication for particularly classroom teaching is that successful grammar instruction has to related to ultimate learning outcomes. Also, creating communicative tasks to offer opportunities for teaching grammar can lead to long-lasting learning effects.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the difficulties of pronunciation and conversation faced by EFL learners who undertook a Preparatory Year Program (PYP) in Saudi Arabia, It highlights the main issues in pronunciation and conversations (e.g., textbooks, teaching methods, and students' attitude and motivation) and techniques to address these problems. The instruments used in the study were classroom observations and teachers' discussions. The results revealed that firstly, students did not have a sound knowledge of grammar. Secondly, students' outside environment was influenced by their mother tongue. Thirdly, the teaching methods did not suit their proficiency levels. Finally, they were demotivated and thought that they have an impossible mission to improve their English pronunciation and conversation.

Abstract

This research was about the analysis of EFL teacher and students in using classroom language. The aim of this study was to find the errors in using classroom language. A descriptive research was used in this research. The samples of this research were an English teacher and science class students of a state senior high school. The researchers collected the data by using field note and voice recording. Then, the data findings were analyzed in using four steps. They are: identifying error, describing error, explaining error, and error evaluation. While data collection techniques were coding, revision, final coding, and result. From the result of the research, the researchers concluded that the errors found from respondents could be classified as local errors. It implies that those errors only affect a single element of sentence, but do not prevent a message from being hard.
