Abstract

Research on IR64 rice shell ash activation with KOH was carried out. Then, this activated ash known asadsorbent was applied to absorb H2O2 solution. This adsorbent was then applied to absorb peroxide number oftraditional coconut oil.The research includes activation of rice ash with 5%, 10%, and 15% KOH, followed by determination ofrate and isotherm adsorption towards H2O2. Finally, the ash was applied to absorb traditional coconut oil, in order todecrease peroxide number of the oil.Research results indicated that, adsorption rate of the ash with KOH activation is higher than without KOHactivation. Adsorption isotherm patern of the ash with and without activation is following Langmuir adsorption. Riceshell ash activated with 15% KOH can increased adsorption capacity of H2O2 about 297.16 mg/g, whereas withoutactivation the adsortion capacity is about 271.66 mg/g. Activated ash with 15% KOH was the applicated to decreaseperoxide number of traditional coconut oil. In this study, we obtain that the ash can decreased peroxide number until84.4%.

Abstract

Isolation of steroid-alkaloid compounds from Banyan leaf (Ficus benjamina L.) has been carried out. As much as 27.13 g of concentrated ethanol extract was resulted from 1.0 kg dried powders of Banyan leaf that was macerated using ethanol as a solvent. Further, this extract was partitioned with n-hexane to obtain 11.39 g concentrated extract of n-hexane. Ethanol extract was dissolved in ethanol-water (7:3), then was evaporated leaving water extract. Futhermore these water extract was partitioned with chloroform to obtain 0.7 g concentrated chloroform extract which was dark green and 2.21 g concentrated water extract which was green.Separations of n-hexane extract containing steroids using column chromatography (stationary phase : silica gel 60 and mobile phase : chloroform-ethylacetate (4:1)) resulted in fourteen fractions with F8 fraction being the most positive toward Liebermann-Burchard reagent, but this fraction contains at least in five components. Purification of the F8 fraction using TLC preparative resulted in six fractions (F8.1, F8.2, F8.3, F8.4, and F8.5) with F8.1 fraction being the most active steroid. The infrared spectrophotometer analysis suggested that the isolate (F8.1 fraction) was a steroid-alkaloid compound having functional groups including O-H stretching at 3448.72 cm-1 that was supported by one band C-OH streching at 1381.03 cm-1, the band of C-H aldehyde group at 2924.09 and 2854.65 cm-1 and the carbonyl group C=O of aldehyde at 1735.9 cm-1. Absorption at 2337.72 cm-1 indicated C?N stretching which was supported by N-H aliphatic and C-N aliphatic groups at 1172.72 and 1111.00 cm-1 respectively. The other groups were C=C aliphatic (1558.48 cm-1), C-H aliphatic bending (1458.18 cm-1), and C-O-C stretching (1257.59 cm-1). The gas chromatogram and mass spectra showed an isomer compound with Mr of 393 and molecular formula of C24H27O4N which was an alkaloide.

Abstract

Adsorption of Pb (II) and Cr (III) cations by ladgestone activated with 2 N sulfuric acid, and 4 N sodium hydroxide have been studied. The activation aims to increase the adsorption capacity of the ladgestone which was characterized by measuring its specific surface area and the acidity of the ladgestone surface. In addition, equilibrium adsorption time, isotherm adsorption, and the adsorption capacity were also determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS). The results showed that activation with 2 N sulfuric acid increased the acidity of ladgestone surface but it decreased the specific surface area, while activation with 4 N sodium hydroxide increased both the acidity and the specific surface area of the ladgestone. Hence, ladgestone activated with 4 N sodium hydroxide gave the highest adsorption capacity both for Pb (II) and Cr (III) which were 12.4976 mg/g and 12.4945 mg/g respectively.

Abstract

Intercalation of Bentonit clay with quaternary ammonium salt, N-cetyl, N,N,N –trimethyl ammoniumbromide in the presence of palmitic acid was investigated in this research. The aim was to improve the capacity ofBentonit clay as adsorbent for lead ion (Pb2+). The salt used has a capacity of 8 mmol/10kg clay, which equal to itscapacity as cation exchanged. After intercalating process, palmitic acid was added and then clay was ready to beused as adsorbent for lead ion (Pb2+).Characterisation of physical chemistry properties of the intercalated Bentonit clay was performed using Xraydiffractometer for basal spacing distance between interlayer Bentonit clay, infra red spectrometer for Brownsteadacid site, and atomic adsorption spectroscopy to determine the capacity of adsorption by analyzing isothermadsorption and equilibrium temperature data.It was found that the intercalation of Bentonit clay with quaternary ammonium salt, N-cetyl, N,N,N –trimethyl ammonium bromide increased the distance between interlayer Bentonit clay (basal spacing from 15.9236Ao to 21.0554 Ao. The infra red spectra data revealed the appearance of Brownstead acid site at n 1419.5 cm-1. Theresult also found that the capacity of Bentonit clay as adsorbent for lead ion (Pb2+) improved from 1.9565 mg/gbefore intercalation to 4.0263 mg/g (after intercalation process).

Abstract

Isolation, identification, and anti-oxidant assay of triterpenoid compound  from Euchresta horsfieldii lesch benn) have been conducted. Maseration of 600 g pranajiwa leaves powder with n-hexane produced 6,1 g n-hexane extract which gave yellow to purple colour change with Lieberman-Burchard reagent. The separation with column chromatography using silica gel 60 obtained 3 fractions (F1, F2, F3) which were then analyzed with triterpenoid test. The positive fraction of triterpenoid (F1) produced 2 g yellow isolate. Infrared spectra indicated that the isolate was a triterpenoid, with characteristic functional groups of OH, –CH, C=O, –C=C, –CH2, –CH3, and C–O alcohol. Ultraviolet-visible spectra showed broad peak at 217 nm. The result of anti-oxidant capacity test of triterpenoid was 94,67%, showing that triterpenoid from pranajiwa leaves can be use as an anti-oxidant.
