Abstract

Despite the progress made with BIM integration into the construction industries of many developed countries, its adoption remains limited in most developing countries. This study systematically reviews 56 articles using the TOE framework to identify and analyse critical barriers that impede BIM implementation within architectural design contexts. Following the PRISMA guidelines, the review categorizes these barriers into three primary dimensions: technological, organizational and environmental. The results revealed that critical technological barriers, such as the high cost of hardware and software, compatibility issues with design tools, and technical complexities in using the technology, hinder architectural innovation and visualization capabilities. Organizational barriers, including insufficient BIM-trained professionals, lack of awareness of BIM capabilities, resistance within design teams and lack of management support, significantly delay BIM integration in design studio workflows. Environmental barriers such as insufficient regulatory frameworks, lack of client demand for BIM-based project design, and weak collaboration across multidisciplinary consultants slow the adoption of digital design practices. The study underscores the interrelated characteristics of these critical barriers, which form a perpetuating cycle that limits the evolution of design practices in developing countries. Addressing these interrelated barriers is crucial for improving design creativity and integrating BIM into studio practices. Future research should examine regional variances and pedagogical strategies for overcoming the BIM adoption challenges in architectural contexts.

Abstract

The utilization of bamboo as a construction material remains infrequent, despite its widespread availability in Indonesia as a natural resource. This reluctance can be attributed to prevailing perceptions of its low durability, deeming it suitable only for temporary structures. Contrary to such notions, bamboo stands as a sustainable biomass material, offering potential solutions to alleviate the environmental impact associated with conventional construction practices. Nevertheless, the incorporation of bamboo in the construction sector, particularly in joint applications, poses notable challenges. This research endeavors to discern the factors influencing individuals' preferences in selecting various types of bamboo connections. Research methods using a qualitative approach from literature and questionnaires. Data analysis involves distribution and correspondence analysis. The findings reveal that internal considerations, encompassing ease of application, connection strength alignment with construction requirements, aesthetics, durability, and material cost, significantly shape the choice of connection types. Furthermore, external factors, specifically the influence of consultants and the expertise of craftsmen, play a pivotal role in the decision-making process. An efficient jointing system typically prioritizes factors such as strength, durability and cost. However, in this context of bamboo jointing systems, additional considerations - such as ease of application, the availability of materials, and aesthetic quality should also be taken into account. This research aspires to enhance understanding regarding the criteria guiding the selection of bamboo connections among the populace, thereby fostering a broader integration of bamboo within the construction industri in a manner that is both sustainable and environmentally conscientious.

Abstract

Navigating complex shopping malls poses significant challenges for visitors, especially when it comes to efficiently locating desired destinations. An ineffective wayfinding system can lead to disorientation and confusion, thereby diminishing the overall user experience. As a multi-functional shopping mall, Uptown Mall Semarang requires a comprehensive evaluation of its existing wayfinding system to facilitate seamless navigation for visitors. On the other hand, this study aims to analyse various wayfinding elements, including architectural design, signage, and sensory information, to assess their effectiveness in aiding visitors' spatial orientation. The objective of this research is to evaluate the impact of wayfinding system on visitor navigation by examining five basic wayfinding elements: districts, paths, edges, nodes, and landmarks, as well as the role of signage in improving wayfinding efficiency in Uptown Mall Semarang. This research employs qualitative methods, using direct observation supplemented by documentation and interviews with visitors for data collection. The evaluation framework incorporates data triangulation, juxtaposing findings from interviews, observations, and literature on wayfinding architecture and signage that influence the wayfinding process at Uptown Mall. Preliminary findings indicate that Uptown Mall has several wayfinding elements and complementary signage. Overall, these components function effectively to assist visitors in navigating the mall. Nevertheless, challenges remain, particularly with regard to multiple entrances and intersections and the legibility of signage. As a result, there is an urgent need for optimization, which should include a blend of clear signage, intuitive floor design, and enhanced landmark visibility.

Abstract

This study explains that religion-based housing has significantly developed in Indonesia; however, the integration of local Islamic organizational traditions into modern housing and traditional villages has not been widely explored. The aim of this research is to identify the manifestation of Islamic values in the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) village of Sekarpuro and in the Bukit Az-Zikra Housing, Sentul. A comparative case study approach is used, employing Henri Lefebvre’s theory of the production of space as the analytical framework. Data collection techniques include participatory observation, in-depth interviews with housing managers, religious leaders, and residents, as well as document analysis of relevant regulations and policies. The findings reveal a significant difference in spatial formation: the NU village of Sekarpuro organically embodies Nahdlatul Ulama values through historical social practices, while Bukit Az-Zikra Housing produces space through planned design by a foundation authority. The study concludes that the presence of central religious figures and strong community networks are key to the successful manifestation of NU values. The theoretical contribution of this research lies in the development of Lefebvre’s spatial theory by adding local cultural dimensions as a significant factor in the production of religious value-based space.

Abstract

Colonial buildings in Surabaya are an important part of the city's architectural heritage, representing its visual identity and the result of acculturation between European and Indonesian cultures. This study aims to examine the composition of facades as elements that shape the visual character of colonial buildings in the Jembatan Merah area. The study uses a qualitative-descriptive approach with a case study method, involving field observations, visual documentation, and analysis based on D.K. Ching's theory of visual composition and Hamid Shirvani's theory of visual character of the environment. Four colonial buildings were selected as objects of study: Singa Building, PTPN X Building, Maybank Building, and NILLMIJ Building. The results of the study show that the four buildings share common principles in terms of geometry, symmetry, scale, and façade rhythm, which create visual cohesion in the urban landscape. The proportion of openings ranging from 25–40% reflects the design adaptation to the tropical climate through the optimisation of natural ventilation, while the dominant proportion of massive surfaces reinforces the monumental impression characteristic of colonial architecture. Façade elements such as prominent main doors, limasan roofs, and decorative ornaments play an important role in shaping the visual identity of the buildings. These findings confirm that façade composition is an integral part of the visual heritage that must be preserved in efforts to conserve and revitalise historic areas. Understanding this visual composition structure is expected to serve as a reference in contextual design planning that is sensitive to the city's historical values.

Abstract

Samarinda Seberang is a historical area in East Kalimantan that has historical value and spirit of place, reflected in the existence of rumah adat Kampung Tenun, masjid Shirathal Mustaqiem, and langgar Al Washielah. Modernization poses challenges to the sustainability of cultural heritage that forms the identity of the Samarinda Seberang urban area. This research aims to formulate a preservation strategy based on the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) approach through a multi-aspect analysis (history, basic physical conditions, demographics and economy, and socio-culture), analysis of challenges and opportunities, and formulation of a preservation vision and proposal. Data collection of area morphology and visual interpretation of architectural elements became the basis of this research. The research method used was descriptive qualitative, with field observation techniques, purposive sampling interviews, and literature studies from government archives and local history sources. The results show that the application of HUL is effective in understanding the relationship between urban morphology and social and cultural structures, as well as providing direction for preservation actions. Recommendations in the form of preservation, reconstruction, restoration, and adaptative-reuse strategies for langgar Al Washielah can be the first step for the preservation of the Samarinda Seberang and the basis for the proposed cultural heritage preservation policy in Samarinda.

Abstract

School is an educational facility that arranges teaching and learning activities according to the levels. In carrying out the learning process, students spend almost their whole time in the classroom to fulfill their learning targets. This can end up in students’ physical and mental disruptions. Therefore, there should be a design principle that can accommodate students’ health and well-being. One of the design principles that reconnects humans with nature or their environment to create a harmonious system that can provide benefits to humans in the form of health and well-being is biophilic design. This study aims to identify biophilic design strategies, evaluate their effects on student health and well-being, and examine the challenges of their implementation in case studies. The method used in this article is an integrative literature review method to see the strategies and effects of biophilic design, then a comparative study is conducted on the implementation of the theory to documented case studies using secondary data sources in three schools under the Green School International. The results of the literature review on the 14th biophilic design patterns show that there are three categories for connecting humans with nature, which were evaluated in case studies. Based on the results of the analysis, it was found that the implementation of the Nature in the Space category was seen in the integration of human sensory with natural elements, the Natural Analogues category was seen in the organic shape and materials of the building, and the Nature of the Space category was seen in the space designed to arouse students' curiosity and exploration in schools through prospect and mystery patterns.

Abstract

The Buka Luwur tradition is a cultural ritual held annually on the 15th of Muharram in Kaliputu Village. This tradition serves as a form of respect to an ancestor, Mbah Depok Soponyono. The procession involves local community members who carry ritual items such as kain luwur (sacred cloth), offerings (sesajen), jenang (traditional porridge), and tumpeng (cone-shaped rice), all of which are considered cultural symbols. The ritual begins with a procession on foot from the main road of Kaliputu Village to the tomb of Mbah Depok Soponyono. This study aims to examine how the Buka Luwur ritual transforms public space into sacred space through meaningful cultural symbols that shape a temporary cultural space. A qualitative approach with a case study method was used, involving the subjective experiences of the local community. The findings reveal that the interaction between cultural symbols and collective community action can symbolically transform a space into a sacred one. Ritual elements such as kain luwur, offerings, jenang, tumpeng, and the procession route function as markers with deep spiritual, social, and cultural meaning for the community—signifying the construction of a temporary cultural space.

Abstract

This paper explores the effectiveness of daylighting strategies in tropical vertical residential buildings, focusing on enhancing daylight performance to improve the physical and mental well-being of the dwellers. With more time spent indoors post-pandemic, optimizing daylight access is essential. A systematic review was conducted using databases such as Science Direct, IOP Science, and Research Gate, resulting in six studies that met the criteria of daylighting, vertical residential, and tropical context. These studies were analyzed to identify key strategies side lighting, atriums, and shading devices evaluated through metrics like Daylight Factor (DF), Spatial Daylight Autonomy (sDA), and glare indexes. Findings show that side lighting is the most common strategy, enhanced by innovations such as light shelves and adjustable shading. This approach improved Target Daylight Illuminance (TDI) by up to 300%, increased Illuminance Uniformity Ratio (IUR) by 180%, and reduced over-illumination by 32–86%. Atriums, though less frequent, showed potential in deeper layouts, increasing indoor illuminance by 0.9–19.2% and reducing corridor over lighting by 41–57.1%. Effectiveness varies by building type and climate, reinforcing the need for context-specific design. The main contribution of this paper lies in synthesizing quantitative evidence into actionable, climate-responsive design insights, providing architects with a concise reference for creating healthier and more sustainable tropical residential environments.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the integration of prayer spaces (mushola) in the design of cafés and coffee shops as part of supporting facilities and services for Muslim visitors, as well as the influence of mushola availability and design quality on visitor loyalty. The research was conducted through an online survey by distributing questionnaires via social media platforms. A total of 288 respondents participated, selected through purposive sampling with criteria including having visited a café or coffee shop in Makassar City within the last six months, having used the available mushola facilities, and residing in Makassar or surrounding areas. The variables in this study include the availability of mushola facilities, the quality of mushola design, and visitor loyalty. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and multiple regression analysis with SPSS 26. The findings indicate that both the availability and design quality of mushola facilities in cafés and coffee shops significantly affect visitor loyalty. Respondents showed a strong preference for the presence of mushola when choosing a place and identified key quality aspects such as cleanliness, ablution area accessibility, spatial comfort, completeness of worship equipment, room size, and interior aesthetics as important factors supporting loyalty. These results underscore the importance of inclusive spatial design, particularly in cafés and coffee shops, and offer practical recommendations for designers and business owners to enhance the experience of Muslim customers.
