Abstract

The aims of this study was to determine the spatial distribution and the risk factors associated with theincidence of rabies in Bali on the year of 2014. A total of 1286 brain samples from all over the Bali wasexamined.  Out of  all brain samples, 130 samples were diagnosed positive for rabies. Based on these data,we collected the dogs location coordinates using a tool of Global Positioning System (GPS). Thosecoordinates  were, then, analyzed with GIS software. The results showed that spatial distribution of theincidence of rabies in each regencies in Bali varied, however, it had a same pattern. The factors ofcounseling, breed, trade, and geographical condition associated to the incidence of rabies. Further researchis needed to map the incidence of rabies over a longer time (more than 3 years), to improve theeffectiveness of surveillance in connection with the eradication of rabies in Bali.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to prove that the molecular marker of Bali’s rabies virus is still conserveand to develop a diagnostic method based on molecular marker. Thirty brain samples of dog that had beeninfected by a rabies virus from 2014 and 2015 were used for this research. The sequences of nucleotidewhich were obtained and the sequences of nucleotide accessed in GenBank were analyzed using  MEGA5.2 software. The result provided that the specific amino acid (isoleusin) at position 308 (open readingframe) as a molecular marker of Bali’s rabies virus was still conserve. Fragment of N gene amplified byReverse RT-PCR method with a specifically designed primers showed that every isolate of rabies virus hadit’s own typical band, and could distinguish Bali isolate from the others in Indonesia.

Abstract

A study to determine the presence and prevalence of bovine tuberculosis and Klebsiella pneumoniae atcattle slaughterhouse in Bali was carried out in Pesanggaran and Mambal abattoirs from January to March2015.The Lungs and lymph nodes were inspected for lesions and then examined through DNA analysis forMycobacterium bovis and culture for isolation of Klebsiella pneumoniae. Of the samples examined, no onehad lesions suggestive of tuberculosis in two abattoirs. However, Klebsiella pneumoniae was observed1/4513 sample (0.02%) only in Mambal abattoir. This study is the first report of the presence of Klebsiellapneumoniae in Bali. Therefore, a aware of this zoonotic Klebsiellosis and its control managementformulation are need.

Abstract

Seroprevalence of Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) infection and the presence of paramyxovirus on ducksat the farmland and the poultry market in Bali have not been known. The purpose of this study was todetermine the comparison of seroprevalence of NDV infection and the presence of paramyxovirus on duckat farmlands and poultry markets in Bali. Locations sampled were Gelgel, Tojan, Akah, Takmung, Tusanvillages in Klungkung Regency, as well as Mengwi, Mengwitani, Lukluk, Sangeh, and Blahkiuh villages ofBadung Regency. The poultry market samples were Galiran of Klungkung Regency, and Bringkit ofBadung Regency. Serum samples and cloacal-tracheal swabs were taken using stratified-random samplingfrom adult ducks of both markets and farmland that had  more than 500 individuals in a flock. Samplingwas carried out every month for 6 months. Antibody against NDV was detected with InhibitionHaemagglutination test (HI). Tracheal and cloacal swabs were propagated in fertile chicken eggs of 9-11days old. Paramyxovirus was detected by the haemagglutination (HA) test and Reverse TranscriptasePolymeraseChain Reaction (RT-PCR). The correlation between NDV seroprevalences at farmland andpoultry markets was analyzed using non-parametric test of Chi-square. The results showed that theseroprevalence of NDV on March until August 2012  reached 45% on farmlands in both regencies, while inthe markets were up to 32.6%. There was no correlation between NDV seroprevalence at farmlands andpoultry markets in the two regencies (r = 0.522, P> 0.05). The paramyxoviruses detected were APMV-5and APMV-8, while NDV was not found.

Abstract

Kintamani dog is the emerging breed of dog from Bali Indonesia. The study was conducted to determinethe prevalence of the type of musculoskeletal disorders in Kintamani dogs based on the data presented atmany veterinary clinics in Bali during a period of five years from January 2009 to December 2013. A totalof 475 samples was obtained and their variations in prevalence were analyzed on the basis of age and sex.The prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in Kintamani dogs included accidental wound (3.2%), arthritis(1.3%), lameness (0.8%), nail injury (0.2%), and hip dysplasia (0.0%). Based on this study we concludedthat Kintamani dog could be expected not susceptible to musculoskeletal disorders.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of leptospirosis in Kintamani dogs in Bali. Bloodsamples were collected from 55 Kintamani dogs. The sera examination was conducted in the VeterinaryResearch Centre, Bogor. Microscopic Agglutination Test was performed to detect the presence ofantibodies against 14 leptospira antigens. The results showed that the prevalence of leptospirosis inKintamani dogs in Bali was 18.18% (10/55). Two out of 10 positive sera samples (3.64%) reacted withthree serovar; 5 (9.09%) reacted with two serovar; and 3 (3.64%) reacted with one serovar. There were fourtypes of serovars detected in this study, namely: Leptospira interrorgans serovar Celledoni, Leptospirainterrorgans serovar Canicola, Leptospira interrorgans serovar Cynopteri dan Leptospira interrorgansserovar Ichterohemorrhagiae. The research found that Leptospira interrorgans serovar Cellodini was verycommon in Kintamani dog.
