Abstract

This study analyzes the use of positive politeness strategies employed by the main characters, Elphaba and Glinda, in the 2024 film adaptation of Wicked. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the data consist of 14 selected utterances taken from the film’s official English subtitles, which yielded 19 instances of positive politeness strategies. The analysis applies Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness framework. The findings reveal that seven types of positive politeness strategies were used, with Strategy 15 (Giving gifts to the hearer) appearing most frequently (5 occurrences or 26.3%), followed by Strategy 1 (Noticing the hearer’s needs), Strategy 2 (Exaggeration), and Strategy 6 (Avoiding disagreement), each occurring three times (15.8%). These strategies predominantly occur in emotionally charged interactions where the characters attempt to build solidarity, reduce tension, and maintain interpersonal harmony. The findings demonstrate that positive politeness in Wicked functions not only as a linguistic tool for maintaining social relationships but also as a narrative device that reflects character development within a musical-fantasy cinematic context, where dialogue and emotional expression are closely intertwined. This study contributes to pragmatic studies by providing empirical evidence of how politeness strategies operate in film discourse, particularly within dramatized and performative genres.

Abstract

This study examines the language functions used by Mufasa in Mufasa: The Lion King and the contexts in which they appear. Previous research has applied Jakobson’s model to film dialogue, but most focus on adult or action-based characters, leaving little attention to symbolic figures in animated films. This study addresses that gap by analyzing Mufasa, a character whose speech reflects leadership, morality, and emotional guidance. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, 120 utterances from the film’s official script were collected, coded, and categorized according to Jakobson’s six functions: referential, emotive, conative, phatic, metalingual, and poetic. Contextual details such as tone, setting, and conversational partner were also considered to ensure accuracy. The results show that Mufasa’s speech is dominated by the referential, emotive, and conative functions (24 utterances each, 20%), followed by metalingual and poetic (18 utterances each, 15%), and phatic (12 utterances, 10%). Referential utterances conveyed facts and knowledge, emotive ones expressed love or concern, and conative statements directed Simba’s actions. Metalingual and poetic functions added clarification and symbolic imagery, while phatic expressions maintained social bonds. These findings demonstrate that Mufasa’s language is intentional and multifaceted, reinforcing his role as father, mentor, and king while showing how animated films use language to convey values and relationships.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the use of derivational suffixes in Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech titled “I Have a Dream.” A total of 42 instances of derivational suffixes were identified in the speech. This research applies Katamba’s (1993) morphological theory within a qualitative descriptive analysis framework to examine how suffixation alters word classes and enhances rhetorical impact. The analysis shows that noun derived from verb derivation is the most productive process (64.3% of cases), reflecting the rhetorical function of abstracting actions into powerful ideological concepts. Derivational suffixes are used extensively to strengthen emotional appeal, convey abstract ideals, and reinforce persuasive messages. Words formed through suffixation contribute to the speech’s stylistic depth and ideological clarity, particularly in themes of justice, equality, and freedom. The findings highlight the significant role of derivational morphology in shaping persuasive political discourse and suggest practical implications for discourse analysis and English language teaching.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the types of derivational suffixes found in the novel “The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea” by Axie Oh, which was selected because its rich use of descriptive language and modern narrative style. Morphology, as a branch of linguistics, focuses on the structure and formation of words. One important part of morphology is the use of derivational suffixes. This study focuses on identifying and classifying these suffixes into four types: adjectival, adverbial, nominal, and verbal. The theory used in this study is based on Plag (2002) and McCarthy (2002), which explained the classification and functions of derivational suffixes. This study uses a qualitative method with an observation technique. The data were collected by reading the first three chapters of the novel, identifying words with derivational suffixes, and grouping them using labelling and bracketing. The result showed 214 derivational suffixes, with adjectival suffixes occurring most frequently, indicating that adjectival derivation has an important role in shaping descriptive expressions in the novel.

Abstract

Aiming to examine how meaning is constructed through visual and textual cues, this research focuses on verbal and non-verbal signs used in selected Liverpool Football Club advertisements posted on Instagram. The objective is to analyze how these elements convey identity, emotion, and cultural resonance in digital football marketing. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, with data consisting of two Instagram advertisements from Liverpool FC’s official account. These posts were chosen based on their prominent use of both linguistic and visual features. Observational techniques were used to identify key verbal elements (slogans, captions, hashtags) and non-verbal components (color, gesture, facial expressions, and composition). The analytical framework draws upon Ferdinand de Saussure’s theory of the signifier and signified, Roland Barthes’ concepts of denotation, connotation, and myth, and Cerrato’s approach to color symbolism in communication. Findings indicate that non-verbal signs hold a more dominant semiotic function, with color especially Liverpool’s iconic red serving as a core emotional and cultural sign. Gestures and facial expressions further amplify the club’s message of pride, unity, and inclusivity. Verbal signs, although fewer in number, play a complementary role by anchoring meaning and enhancing brand recall. Through the combination of both sign types, the advertisements function as complex semiotic texts that engage audiences on both emotional and cultural levels, reinforcing global fan connection and brand identity.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of figurative language-specifically metaphor, simile, and hyperbole-in the lyrics of Survivor’s 1982 album Eye of the Tiger. Employing a qualitative semiotic approach, the research analyzes 25 instances of figurative language across nine songs. The findings reveal metaphors as the dominant figure of speech (48%), followed by similes (32%) and hyperboles (20%). These rhetorical devices collectively enhance the expression of resilience, empowerment, and adversity, deepening the emotional resonance with listeners. This study addresses a research gap by exploring how these devices interact within the album’s narrative rather than in isolation. The results demonstrate the essential role of figurative language in conveying complex cultural narratives in popular music.

Abstract

This study investigates syntactic errors in the narrative essays of Indonesian EFL students, specifically third-semester English Literature students at Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia. Writing is among the most demanding skills in language learning, requiring mastery of grammar and sentence structure in addition to idea organization. Using a descriptive qualitative design, ten student essays were analyzed and classified based on the Surface Strategy Taxonomy (Dulay, Burt, & Krashen, 1982), which includes omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. A total of 101 syntactic errors were identified: misformation (31.7%) was the most frequent, followed by omission (28.7%), misordering (27.7%), and addition (13.9%). The results revealed that omission errors were mainly caused by interlingual transfer from Indonesian, while misformation and misordering resulted from intralingual factors such as overgeneralization and incomplete rule acquisition. These findings confirm that syntactic errors are systematic and developmental in nature, representing the learners’ interlanguage progression rather than failure. Pedagogically, the study underscores the need for focused instruction on verb tense, auxiliary usage, article application, and word order, supported by contrastive and technology-assisted approaches. The study concludes that understanding learners’ syntactic errors is essential for designing effective grammar pedagogy in EFL writing, allowing errors to serve as valuable indicators of language development rather than mere deficiencies.

Abstract

This study aims to determine 1) the effect of using Educaplay media on the English learning outcomes (specifically vocabulary mastery) of fifth-grade students at SDN 24 Pakkanna in Wajo Regency, and 2) the perceptions of fifth-grade students at SDN 24 Pakkanna regarding the use of Educaplay media in English learning. The type of research used is a quasi-experimental design using the Nonequivalent Posttest Only Control Group Design. The population and sample in this study consisted of 40 fifth-grade students, with class V B (20 students) as the experimental class and class V A (20 students) as the control class selected through purposive sampling. The intervention in the experimental class was carried out over three treatment sessions. The data collection techniques used tests, questionnaires, and documentation with descriptive and inferential data analysis. The results of the descriptive analysis of the questionnaire showed that students' perceptions of the use of Educaplay media in English learning were in the very good (85%) and good (15%) categories. Based on the results of inferential statistical analysis, p < 0.001 is smaller than α = 0.05 using an independent sample t-test, which shows that H₀ is rejected and Ha is accepted, indicating that there is a significant difference in learning outcomes between the class receiving treatment using Educaplay media and the class not receiving the same treatment. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that there is an effect of using Educaplay media on the English learning outcomes of fifth-grade students at SDN 24 Pakkanna, as well as very good perceptions from the majority of students.

Abstract

This qualitative case study examines the pedagogical challenges faced within the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) preparation program at the Police Language School (Sebasa), with a specific focus on the instruction of Police Academy graduates. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations involving eight instructors, comprising two representatives from each of the IELTS modules (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking). The thematic analysis reveals that the primary challenge is a "motivational deficit" stemming from the clash between the students' regimented, command-based training background and the critical thinking demands of the IELTS exam. While the graduates often display passive behavior and "clique" isolation, findings indicate that Direct Instruction remains the dominant pedagogical approach as a pragmatic adaptation to the students' hierarchical culture. To mitigate disengagement, instructors utilize hybrid strategies, including gamification and English for Specific Purposes (ESP) contextualization, to bridge the relevance gap. The study concludes that effective instruction in this paramilitary context requires a pedagogical balance that respects military discipline while scaffolding the autonomy necessary for academic proficiency.

Abstract

This research is based on the background of problems in learning to write narrative texts, including the low writing skills of students in paying attention to spelling, vocabulary, and difficulties in developing their ideas to be poured into a narrative text. In addition, based on survey data from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) conducted by the Programme for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in 2022, students' literacy and numeracy skills are still low. The purpose of this study is to improve the ability to write narrative texts using digital series image media through a deep learning approach. The method used is classroom Action Research, with the Kemmis and Mc Taggart models through 2 cycles, each cycle through four stages, namely planning, action, observation and reflection. The data collection technique used a narrative text writing test using digital series image media, observation, interviews and documentation. Meanwhile, the analysis technique uses data triangulation. The research subjects of grade V elementary school students. The results of the study showed that 38% of pre-tests, 78% of the first cycle and 81% of the second cycle. The results of the observation of the first cycle were 80% and the second cycle 90%. It can be concluded that students' narrative writing skills can be improved through digital series drawings through a deep learning approach because the images produced are in accordance with the students' daily lives, making it easier for students to express their ideas.
