Abstract

The integration of digital tools and cultural content has been explored in every level of education, yet there are still few studies that have connected it to Riau local wisdom, particularly its tourism destination. This research aimed to develop an interactive learning media based on Riau tourism places for learning descriptive text. This research followed the ADDIE model by Branch (2009) for its developmental process, involving students’ need analysis, developing the prototype, and evaluation. There were two schools involved in this study as the participants. One private school served as the small evaluation group, and one public school served as the field test. The data were collected using a questionnaire, a reading comprehension test, and an interview. The data were analyzed using qualitative and quantitative approach. This research found that the media was valid and practical due to the average score obtained from the experts’ validation and small evaluation group of 4.02 and 3.29, respectively. Furthermore, it also had a potential effect on students’ reading proficiency in the field test implementation. The experiment group obtained 55.59 for the pre-test, and after implementing the media in the classroom, the score improved to 74.00 for the post-test. The students gave positive feedback as well on the employment of the media in the classroom. This showed that digital media, as an innovative media, could be one of the strategies that should be employed in English reading classes for senior high school students to enhance students’ reading comprehension, contribute positive perception, and promote local tourist sites.

Abstract

This study employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) to investigate the challenges and strategies of teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in rural areas. A total of 14 empirical studies published between 2015 and 2024 were analyzed from databases including ERIC, Publish or Perish, and Google Scholar. Findings indicate that the most frequently reported challenge was the lack of teaching resources and facilities (71%), followed by limited teacher training opportunities (57%), teachers’ non-English educational background (43%), and cultural adaptation difficulties (36%). Strategies to address these issues included the use of culturally relevant materials (64%), community and parental engagement (50%), direct and simplified teacher talk (43%), and the integration of technology where possible (36%). These results highlight the urgent need for targeted professional development, improved infrastructure, and policy support to ensure equitable access to quality English education in rural settings.

Abstract

Folktales often depict gender inequality, such as active and heroic male roles, while women are portrayed as passive. This representation has the potential to lead to unequal social treatment. By critiquing character portrayals, students can consider more equitable narratives. This study aims to reveal the perceptions of an EFL teacher in a vocational school in Pamekasan about gender awareness in Madurese folktales as a medium for critical pedagogy. Using the descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through interviews and analyzed using critical pedagogy theory. The results show that the teacher positively perceives folklore as a learning medium, especially in raising students' awareness of gender issues and improving critical thinking skills. Folktales are considered effective for improving students' learning motivation, language skills, and cultural understanding. In addition, folklore has the potential as a critical pedagogy tool that helps students analyze gender roles, challenge stereotypes, and build awareness of injustice, especially in the context of gender equality.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the impact of teacher participation in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) on the enhancement of teacher competencies in UPTD SMAN 2 Polewali. A quantitative approach was employed, using a Likert-scale questionnaire to measure the level of teacher engagement in PLCs and their professional competencies, including pedagogical, professional, social, and personal aspects. The findings reveal that active participation in PLCs significantly improves teachers' ability to adopt innovative and effective teaching strategies, manage classrooms, and engage in reflective practices. Moreover, PLCs provide a collaborative space for teachers to share experiences, address challenges, and develop joint solutions, ultimately fostering a culture of continuous improvement in educational quality. Despite these promising results, this study is limited to a specific local context, and the use of quantitative methods restricts the exploration of in-depth interactions within PLCs. Future research should incorporate mixed methods and expand to diverse regions to achieve broader generalizability and deeper insights.

Abstract

English is a foreign language that can be acquired through formal education and functions as a communication medium (Agustin 2011). It encompasses diverse materials and complexities at each proficiency level, and there are numerous challenges and obstacles in the English language acquisition process. The study of English is not solely a governmental initiative to enhance the quality of human resources in Indonesia, particularly students' knowledge, but is also a means for students to address future challenges that necessitate active English usage, both in oral and written forms. The objective of this research is to develop an English learning approach grounded in local wisdom and to produce pedagogical materials in the form of modules for Basic English Grammar and Reading that are valid, practical, engaging, and effective. These materials aim to facilitate students' development of English writing and reading skills and augment their interest in English learning based on local wisdom. This research was conducted at the Entrepreneurship High School Chevalier Anasai (ECA) in Anasai Village, Semangga District, Merauke. The participants comprised 35 Grade X students. This descriptive qualitative study was predicated on classroom learning experiences and literature reviews from various sources. Data analysis techniques involved descriptive analysis based on observations of the teaching and learning processes. Data collection methods included observations, learning documents, and surveys of students and teachers at the institution. Data analysis was performed through data reduction, data presentation, and verification until conclusions were drawn (Sugiyono, 2010). The findings of this research will be compiled into a pedagogical text, which is anticipated to serve as the primary instructional material for English education in Grade X at the Entrepreneurship High School Chevalier in Anasai Village, Semangga District, Merauke. The expected outcome of this research is an enhancement in students' grammar, reading, and writing proficiency in English, as well as the provision of an English textbook as a supporting resource for English learning, both within the classroom and in domestic settings. The output of this research is an English textbook containing reading and writing materials linked to local wisdom for Grade X students at Chevalier Anasai High School, Semangga District.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of the Elsa Speak application in enhancing speaking skills among students at Universitas Nusa Cendana, Kupang. As English language proficiency becomes increasingly crucial in academic and professional contexts, innovative technological solutions like Elsa Speak—an AI-powered pronunciation and speaking coach—offer promising alternatives to traditional speaking instruction. The research examines how students at the Fourth Semester Students of English Education Department, Nusa Cendana University, Kupang, NTT utilize the application's speech recognition technology, personalized feedback mechanisms, and interactive exercises to improve their pronunciation, fluency, and overall speaking confidence. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study collected data from English language learners through pre-tests and post-tests, questionnaires, and interviews to assess learning outcomes and user experiences. Findings indicate that regular use of Elsa Speak resulted in measurable improvements in pronunciation accuracy and speaking fluency, with students reporting increased confidence in oral communication. However, challenges such as limited internet connectivity and the need for self-discipline in independent learning were identified as potential barriers. The study concludes that while Elsa Speak serves as a valuable supplementary tool for speaking practice, its effectiveness is maximized when integrated with instructor-led activities and peer interaction. These findings contribute to the growing body of research on mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) and provide practical insights for educators in Indonesian higher education contexts seeking to incorporate technology-enhanced language instruction.

Abstract

Roth’s novel Divergent depicts a dystopian society where faction-based identities determine social roles. Using a qualitative descriptive analysis approach, this study explores the character of Peter Hayes, an antagonist whose actions reflect deliberate psychological manipulation. This study uses E. Dotsenko's theory of manipulation. In this study, Peter only employs 4 of 6 traits, consisting of operational object manipulation, conventional manipulation, inference-oriented manipulation, and personality structure manipulation. The data was gathered from dialogues and narratives between Peter and other characters in the novel. The study findings show that Peter consistently uses negative manipulation to achieve what he wants. This article also explores how Peter's manipulative behaviour impacts the other characters and the group represented by the faction. This study contributes to young adult literature discourses by showing how antagonistic characters reflect deeper psychological and social issues. It offers insights into the intersection of literature and psychology and underscores how manipulative dynamics in fiction can shape readers’ views of power, morality, and relationships.

Abstract

Teaching English to EFL students is a challenge for English teachers in Indonesia, where English is viewed as a foreign language. Teachers in Indonesia often use code-mixing to facilitate better understanding of the lessons among students and to help them follow the material easily. However, the use of code-mixing itself must be carefully considered to ensure students can also practice their English specifically. Therefore, the objective of this study is to ascertain whether English teachers’ classroom instructions are affected by the use of code-mixing, and if so, whether code-mixing can positively affect English learning in schools. For instance, code-mixing helps them enhance their understanding of the material. This quantitative study collected data through an online questionnaire and was conducted on EFL teenage students in Indonesia. In this study, data were collected from 165 EFL teenage students in Indonesia through a closed-ended Likert-scale questionnaire. The data were then analyzed using Regression Analysis, which showed a significant impact (Sig. = 0.000, p < 0.05). The findings indicate that code-mixing impacted students’ perception of English language learning with their teachers. It helped them understand the material, develop language skills, and make them feel more confident.
