Abstract

This article investigated about semiotic that found in instagram logo. This article used Instagram, because many people nowadays used Instagram to express their selves.  The aim of this study was to find out the connotative and denotative meaning through the instagram. The researcher used John theory to reveal this study. In this research, the researcher applied the qualitative descriptive method. The method of collecting data was observation. The object of this research was the instagram logo. The result is there are twelve data that has meaning from different logo on Instagram. They all have different functions based on the logo. The conclusion is Instagram as a social media app that allows users to share photos and videos, add captions, edit filters, engage with others, and explore the world by using this application.

Abstract

This research is a Classroom Action Research (CAR).  It aimed at improving students’ speaking skill of the 7th grade at SMP N 1 Kotabunan East Bolaang Mongondow through the snowball throwing technique. The subjects of this research were 31 students consisted of 21 girls and 10 boys. But, only 25 students who attended the classroom. In this research, the researchers used mixed method (quantitative and qualitative design). To collect the data, the researchers utilized by using tests and observation. The researchers conducted the tests by asking the questions that related to the lessons that students had previously learnt.  Meanwhile, observation was accomplished in order to observe qualitatively about the students’ learning process by the technique. The results showed that, in the first cycle, the mean score was 39.84 with percentage of students who passed the test was 52%. While in the second cycle, the mean score of post-test was 72.16 with the percentage of students who passed the test was 100%. According to the observation in the first cycle, it revealed that students could not carry out the technique properly and some students were not good in speaking such as having bad grammar and pronunciation. Furthermore, the researchers used the papers to construct as a ball in conducting the snowball throwing technique. In the second cycle, it indicated that the students were going better by carrying out the following technique. Based on the indication of the result, it can be said that there was an improvement of students’ speaking skill through snowball throwing technique of the 7th grade at SMP N 1 Kotabunan East Bolang Mongondow.

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative research deals with classroom interaction in teaching English for mechanical engineering students. This research aims at finding out and describing the classroom interaction of mechanical engineering class at Universitas Harapan Medan. The purpose of this study is to figure out the patterns of classroom interaction in English teaching learning process for mechanical engineering class. The methods used in collecting data were observation and interview. The data were in the form of words, clauses, and sentences that carried out by video, and in-depth interview transcripts. The participants were an English lecturer and twenty two mechanical engineering students. The technique of data analysis used data collection, data diplay and drawing conclusion. The result of this research was dominated by the interaction between the teacher and students. The percentage of using English  between lecturer and students’ interaction is 40 %. It happened because the students had difficult to respon the lecturer’s question in English.

Abstract

AbstractThe appropriateness of teaching materials is one of the essential components in gaining the maximum input of knowledge to achieve the success of a language learning. In terms of teaching English for specific purposes, the contextualized material is a prerequisite to encourage the learners’ productivity in using the language. Therefore, the present study sheds light on English teaching material needs of accounting students at IAIN Surakarta and the challenges that accounting students face to fulfil the needs. Descriptive qualitative was employed in this study by administering Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and web-based survey to the first-year accounting students who had finished English for Specific Purposes course as the participants. Semi-structured interview was also conducted with the English lecturers and the head of accounting department to enrich the data. The data were analysed by transcribing the results of FGD and semi-structured interview and describing the questionnaire results as data triangulation. The findings of this study showed that contextual English teaching materials are strongly needed by accounting students to enhance their language production. Moreover, there are some insights from the participants related to the ideal teaching materials for accounting students. These findings offer practical insights in designing a representative teaching material for accounting students to equip them with outstanding language skills in accounting field.

Abstract

This research aimed at finding out speech variety used by elite people in Makassar which was the phenomenon of Indonesia–English code switching and code mixing in four aspects namely (1) conversation function and reasons of code switching by the elite people, (2) the switched segments which were frequently used, (3) combination patterns of code switching, and (4) the types of code switching. In this research both qualitative and quantitative methods were applied. The data were obtained through recording for two hours. The population was the elite people in Makassar who were divided into five groups namely doctors, government officials, lawyers, lecturers, and politicians living in Makassar. There were 100 conversation produced by 25 respondents. The result show that the function of code switching which most frequently occurs in conversation tends to play with English popular expressions. In terms of switched segments, the most frequently used are noun phrases, while the most often employed combination is the combination of verbs (VP) and nouns (NP). In relation to type of code switching, intra-clausal is the most frequently used by the elite people in conversation.

Abstract

This paper focused on exploring the teachergrams phenomenon and English language learning. Thus, this paper outlined two main points including the the teachergrams existence in Instagram and their roles in English language learning. The result discussed showed that teachergrams have ability to turn instagram into interactive learning tool in English language learning. The discussion concludes that the existence of teachergrams have become a useful tool to spread English materials and contents for the followers/English learners in Instagram. Additionally, the content written in this paper is expected to be valuable resources for the people who teach and learn English in digital platform especially Instagram.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the students' competence in answering questions on TOEFL structure and written expression. It mainly focused on Information and Technology students because the current curriculum in the institution requires them to take TOEFL. Ninety-two students from three different classes participated in this study. Data collection was done by utilizing an adopted test consisting of 40 questions was used. The data shows that the students' competence in the TOEFL structure and written expression is low. It is revealed by observing the mean scores of the students, namely 23.75 (class A), 27.5 (class B), and 42.5 (class C). One of the main reasons to explain this scenario is due to their poor English Grammar. Therefore, the study suggests the students should be guided in learning basic-to-advanced level of English Grammar before introducing them to the TOEFL's structure and written expression.

Abstract

This research aimed at analyzing the types of maxims of the cooperative principle that were used in the novel entitled The Fault in Our Stars. The data source of data was a novel entitled The Fault in Our Stars that fulfilled cooperative principle based on four maxims of cooperative principles: Maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relation, and maxim of manner. Theory that the researcher used in this research was theory of Grice. In this research, a descriptive qualitative method was applied to answer the research questions. The observational method and non-participatory technique were applied by the researcher in collecting the data. In analyzing the data the researcher used pragmatic identity method based on the theory of Sudaryanto. The results showed that the level of cooperative principle was mostly used in the novel. The researcher found 30 data related to cooperative principle. The maxims of quantity have 15 data, 3 for maxim of quality, 10 for maxim of relation and maxim of manner has only 2 data.

Abstract

This research aims to reveal Fagin’s criminal thought in Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist and to examine the factors that influence Fagin’s criminal thought presented in the novel. This research is classified into library research. The subject of the research is Oliver Twist, Charles Dickens’ fiction novel. The novel is used as the primary source, while books, journals, and articles related to criminal thought theories in psychology were taken as the secondary source. A psychological approach is applied to analyze the data. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively. In analyzing the data, the researcher took five steps. The data were collected from reading and re-reading the text, identifying those that embody criminal thinking, categorizing them based on the objectives of the research, comparing them to the theoretical frameworks, and finally interpreting them using a psychological approach. After conducting the research, it can be drawn some conclusions; first, by seeing the eight aspects of criminal thought, Fagin has five aspects which are classified in the high category, and second, the factors that influence Fagin’s criminal thought reflected in the novel are societal and economic, neighbor-hood and local institutions, and drugs.

Abstract

Talking sticks is an alternative teaching technique to support students in developing their speaking performance. Holding the talking sticks empower the deep communication between people and allow opportunities to speak up during the classroom. Thus, the present study is to stimulate the students' speaking performance in EFL classroom by utilizing the talking sticks.  It applied classroom action research which was conducted in four stages; planning, action, observation, and reflection. A total of 22 students is the subject of speaking tests, observation, and interviews. The results demonstrated a significant improvement of students' speaking performance which can be seen in the mean score result and the number of students passing the minimal standard score. The mean score gained 9.43 higher than in the pre-test and 77% of students passed the minimal standard score. Both of these criteria indicated that utilizing the talking stick can boost the students' speaking performance
