The recent literature of writing studies suggests that there is a possibility of different perception between instructor and university students on what causes students’ writing reluctance which leads to ineffective writing teaching activities initiated by the instructor. Such ineffective teaching has, then, become the main cause of students’ disengagement in writing classes at university. This paper is aimed at exploring the perception from students’ side as the targeted individuals within the teaching process itself. In order to describe such perception, a critical literary review of previous studies from the relevant area is employed. It is argued that students’ perception on instructor-initiated writing activities are influenced by pedagogical consequences, learner’s linguistic competence, and their original perceptions of the English writing skill. This investigation has found that it is very crucial for instructors to design activities that engage students in three dimensions: cognitive, behavioural, and emotional. The study also finds that instructors' selection of teaching strategies influences students' motivation extrinsically in the form of reinforcement, or in contrast, degradation of their motivation. Finally, this study confirms it is possible for students to respond pedagogical activities differently from the expectation of the instructors.

AbstractThis research focused on investigating the effects of lecturers’ formal and informal talks on students’ understanding of the material. The aim of this research is to elaborate how the lecturer’s talk in terms of its formal and informality could affect the students’ understanding of the material delivered in the classroom. The researcher applied qualitative method to fulfil the aim and collected the data of the research by using three instruments which were classroom observations, recording of the teaching and learning process, and interview of the students. All teaching processes and interviews were recorded and transcribed and analysed using discourse analysis approach. The data was analyzed by adopting the six facets of understanding proposed by Wiggins & McTighe (2018). The research was conducted at the first and fifth semester groups of English Study Program of IAIN Bone. The result shows that the lecturers used both formal and informal language alternately in teaching. The students preferred the lecturer to use informal language in delivering the material. According to them, using informal language made the students easier to understand the material delivered by the lecturer. They argued that teaching method and including the variation of lecturer’s language in teaching gave a significant improvement to the students’ achievement and understanding. The students fulfilled all the six facets of understanding based on the theory Wiggins & McTighe (2018). It meant that the students had a complete understanding of the material delivered by the lecturers.

Intellectual curiosity also known as epistemic curiosity, it is one of the important abilities that determines student’s creativity and motivation. There are three main components of epistemic responses is observed in this study, they are observations, thinking and consultations. Through classroom observations and interview, the researcher found out that students need to be encouraged and trained continuously to improve their intellectual curiosity in the class. Data showed that almost all students were not focused on paying attention to the teacher explanations, lack of ideas, rarely ask or respond the questions and not actively participating in group or class discussion. Overall, the students were passive in developing creative ideas and showing lack of motivation to learn in class. Thus, teachers are strongly advised to encourage students’ intellectual curiosity in learning process because curiosity allows students to think creatively, critically, and boost their academic performance.
