Abstract

The purpose of this research is to give a description about translating English sentence into Indonesian and arranging the phrase, clause or sentence structures by the students that may result a number of problems in their translations. The study is done by taking 20 students‟ translations of several sentences from one of the textbook of Civil Engineering in which the writers find that the students make many mistakes. These translations are analyzed and described by using a certain method of analysis. In this analysis the writers describe two linguistic aspects; lexical and grammatical aspects. The writers also describe the factors affected the students when making many errors in their translations. The study reveals that the students‟ way of translating the sentences result in a number of problems such as some mistakes/deviations in the selection of parable words in bahasa Indonesia, the arrangement of phrase and clause structure that affecting the translation of grammatical structure, the way of the students translate that is very literal, the lack of vocabulary, the lack translating experience and the lack translating theory and application.

Abstract

This paper describes and offers writing practice through parallel writing technique to improve students’ writing skill. This technique show, how to express their ability with use their own words in written text. The concept of parallel writing technique is central to teaching of connected discourse since it the students should have a model from which work guide them towards their own ability to express themselves in written English. Parallel writing is one of technique that can improve our own idea, main, and opinion in writing. Parallel writing is written version immediately stage. When the students might see a short piece of connected writing by using the new language and then be asked to write a similar piece with use their own word.

Abstract

This research aimed at describing the  competence of students in understanding narrative reading text at SMAN 1 Soe Kabupaten Timur Tengah Selatan (TTS) NTT. This research used descriptive research method.  The population of this research is first class of SMAN 1 Soe Kabupaten Timur Tengah Selatan (TTS) NTT in academic year 2014/2015. The total number of population is 142 students in four classes.  The researcher  used random sampling technique. There were  20 students  as sample of the research .  The writer took 5 students from each class. It used reading test as instrument. The result of the research shows that Based on the students’ score in reading narrative text, most of them have low competence in answering the question of narrative text.  It is proved by mean students’ means score in poor classification, namely 49.3.  Based on student’ answers in the text, it can be seen that there are some students’ difficulties in reading narrative text, such as they can’t comprehend the part and contents of narrative.

Abstract

The objectives of this research were: (1) to find out te use of jigsaw technique significantly to improve students’ vocabulary of the second semester students at English department students of Cokroaminoto Palopo University (2) to find out te use of mind mapping technique significantly to improve students’ vocabulary of the second semester students at English department students of Cokroaminoto Palopo University (3) to find out which is technique and improve students’ vocabulary cooperative learning jigsaw technique and mind mapping technique. This research employed true experimental design. The population of this research was the second semester students of English department of Cokroaminoto University Palopo in academic year 2013/2014. The sample of this research was the second semester students in academic year 2013/2014 where consisted of 80 students. This research used cluster random sampling technique. The research data were collected by using two kinds of instrument namely: vocabulary test for the students. Data on the students’ vocabulary skills were analyzed by using idependent t-test. The results of the research were: (1) jigsaw technique can improve vocabulary of the students of English department of Cokroaminoto Palopo University, and (2) mind mapping technique can improve vocabulary of the students of English department of Cokroaminoto Palopo University (3) jigsaw technique and mind mapping technique were effective in learning vocabulary.  It can be concluded that the jigsaw technique and mind mapping technique in the teaching process is effective to be implemented in improving the students’ vocabulary.

Abstract

This paper is focused on the teachers at elementary school who teach other subjects in English namely math and science at bilingual class program.  The main matter is what are their strategy in preparing their selves to teach other subjects.  And how they solve the problem and difficulties during the teaching other subjects.  This research can be a good share and information about helping teachers teach other subject in English. This is a qualitative research. There are 2 teachers as respondent of this research.  They are observed and interviewed. Then, the data are analyzed descriptively.  The data are categorized and percentage. Finally the data were discussed.  The result of this research shows that both of the teachers do some preparation before presenting the material in English such as make some notes on important vocabulary that will be taught in the class.  The, the way they handle the problem by repeating some instruction in order to make the information reached the point.  In addition, they need to arrange their lesson plan well in terms of bilingual action in English and Indonesia.  They have to consider many aspects of students’ condition and their need in the subject.

Abstract

Terdapat hubungan yang erat antara politik dan bahasa. Wacana politik tidak bisa dipisahkan dengan bahasa. Dalam kehidupan politik terutama dalam era demokrasi dibutuhkan komunikasi yang intens baik secara vertikal maupun horizontal. Bahasa dipergunakan sebagai media dalam komunikasi politik. Bahasa standar harus diperhatikan dalam menyusun Undang Undang. Dengan demikian bahasa yang digunakan tidak menyimpan berbagai tanda tanya atau interpretasi yang membingungkan. Sebelum Undang Undang disahkan, mestinya dilakukan kajian bahasa yang menjunjung tinggi politik bahasa yang mengedepankan kepentingan publik daripada kepentingan penutur bahasa tertentu

Abstract

Teaching English Vocabulary to the elementary school students is a challenge. Children in age ten to age 15 are in critical period. In this period they can get the lesson easily if they have good motivation to study especially in studying English. In elementary school, the teacher should have a good creativity in order to handle the class very well.  The teacher should find some strategies to make the students keep concentrating on the lesson.  In addition, the main role of teacher is to make their students motivated in learning. This article is aimed at explaining Learning Model Starting with Brain Gym in Learning English Vocabulary at Elementary School. Brain gym is a simple movement which involves some points which is related to the brain of human. It can make the students easily to breath, the blood circular can be in a good circulation.  The movement of brain gym can increase the students’ concentration in learning, strengthen the students’ motivation, develop the students’ self confidence, self esteem, and togetherness feeling and can reduce the students’ stress in learning

Abstract

In teaching and learning process, teachers often focus more on how to teach than on how the students learn. Knowing the appropriate  learning strategies will able to examine not just how to teach effectively, but what the students do to facilitate their own learning. Chosing appropriate teaching techniques become evidence that learner tend to take more responsibility for their own learning. Autonomous leaning is one way to realize that. In autonomous learning the students are forced to be the independent learners. They can take incharge on their own learningwhich sees learners as individuals who can and should control and be responsible for their own learning climate.One way to apply the autonomus learning is by knowing the students’ preferenced learning style. There are different learning styles of students. Three of the most popular ones are visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic.

Abstract

The objective of the research was to find out the Luwu society’s perception toward the custom law “Ripaoppangi Tana” and its existence in the society. The method used in this research was descriptive method and the technique of data collection includes interview and document analysis. The result of the research indicates 1) the society’s obedience toward the custom law “Ripaoppangi Tana” because they believe that Datu was the God descent and all of their decision must be obeyed. 2) Some people are fearful of the custom law because of the sanction that will be applied to them. 3) Bravery, the society is brave to defy the custom law because the unfair sanction and it does not deserve with the violation that they do. The custom law “Ripaoppangi Tana” in Kabupaten Luwu vanished and changed with the national law since the Independence Proclamation.

Abstract

This thesis aimed at finding out the application of Directed Reading Thinking Activity strategy in improving the students’ reading comprehension at the eighth grade of SMPN 2 Palopo. This research applied pre-experimental design and it was conducted for four meetings through lesson study activity in treatment process. The population of this research is 272 students. In determining the sample, the researcher used random sampling technique to choose sample and took class IIA consisted of 30 students. The instrument used to collect the data was narrative text. To collect the data the researcher used SPSS version 20. The researcher concluded that the application of Directed Reading Thinking Activity Strategy can improve students’ reading comprehension. It is proven by the significant difference between the students’ mean score in pretest and posttest. In pretest, the students’ mean score is 71.33 and the students’ mean score in posttest is 80.40. The researcher also finds that the P-value is 0.00 and the α I s 0.05, therefore P< α (0.00< 0.05). It is proven that the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. It means that used directed reading thinking activity strategy can improve students’ reading comprehension.
