Abstract

Teaching internships provide essential experiential learning that connects theoretical coursework with real classroom practice. This study examines the challenges faced by pre-service English teachers during a three-month internship in Islamic schools across East Java, from 10 February to 16 May 2025. Using a qualitative design, data were gathered through semi-structured interviews and reflective journals from eight English Education students at UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya. The findings reveal three main categories of challenges: (1) teacher-related difficulties such as limited preparation, low self-confidence, insufficient pedagogical competence, challenges in designing assessments, and limited classroom management skills; (2) student-related challenges, including students’ low self-confidence in using English and diverse learning styles; and (3) school-related, including limited technological facilities and curriculum constraints that reduced instructional hours due to religious and institutional priorities. The study emphasizes the need to strengthen practical pedagogical skills, particularly in lesson planning, differentiated instruction, and assessment development, supported by enhanced supervisory mentoring and closer university–school collaboration. These insights underscore the importance of context-responsive teacher education to better prepare future English teachers for diverse educational settings.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the structure and function of al-balāghah in Qasidat al-Burda by Imam al-Busiri. Through a refined comparative approach, comparing selected verses of al-Burda with stylistic features in classical poetry such as Banat Su‘ad and the works of al-Mutanabbi, the study highlights al-Busiri’s distinct rhetorical identity. Guided by classical balāghah theory—including ʿIlm al-Maʿānī, ʿIlm al-Bayān, and ʿIlm al-Badīʿ—this research examines how rhetorical devices shape meaning and enhance aesthetic effect. Using qualitative textual analysis, fourteen key verses were closely examined to identify major devices such as metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, and analogy, and to determine their role in reinforcing thematic unity. Examples from the analysis include the metaphor “Shams al-Dīn” (sun of religion), the hyperbolic expression “Nāzhir al-Badr ghayru nāzhir,” and the personification of the sky in “‘Alāmah al-Samā’ al-Dunyā subḥānahu,” each demonstrating Busiri’s ability to construct vivid spiritual imagery. The findings show that Qasidat al-Burda contains fourteen integrated rhetorical constructions that enrich its spiritual message, elevate the status of the Prophet Muhammad, and refine its aesthetic resonance. These rhetorical strategies not only enhance imagery but also strengthen the poem’s communicative, devotional, and didactic functions. The study concludes that Imam al-Busiri successfully merges artistic expression with religious values, producing a work of enduring influence in both classical Arabic literary heritage and contemporary Islamic scholarship.

Abstract

Teacher’s nonverbal communication significantly effects students’ learning experiences, particularly in EFL Islamic classroom context where language and motivation are closely linked. This study examined the effects of teachers’ nonverbal communication on students’ academic motivation using an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design. Quantitative data were collected from 60 students through questionnaires measuring seven aspects of nonverbal communication namely proxemics, haptics, kinesics, chronemics, oculesics, physical environment, and paralanguage and three aspects of motivation that is, autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Qualitative data were obtained through classroom observations and interviews with ten selected students. Findings revealed that kinesics and proxemics received the highest ratings, indicating active use of gestures and classroom movement to engage students. Haptics and paralanguage scored lowest, suggesting limited use due to cultural norms. Correlation and regression analyses indicated a strong positive relationship between teachers’ nonverbal communication and student motivation. Observations confirmed that smiling, nodding, using hand gestures, and approaching students created a positive and low-anxiety learning atmosphere. Interviews supported these results, with students expressing greater confidence, comfort, and willingness to participate when teachers-maintained eye contact, used expressive gestures, and adjusted their proximity. This study highlights the importance of nonverbal behaviors in fostering a motivating EFL learning environment. Teachers’ awareness and intentional use of such cues can strengthen engagement and emotional connection, even in culturally specific settings.

YouTube also helps increase students' intrinsic motivation, foster appreciative attitudes, and encourage them to read literary texts independently. Teachers use YouTube not only as a medium for video playback, but also as a means of reflection, discussion, and understanding strengthening. Supporting factors in the use of YouTube include the availability of internet access, students' enthusiasm for digital media, and the abundance of quality literary content. The obstacles found are network limitations, potential distractions for entertainment content, and limited learning time in the classroom. Overall, this study concludes that YouTube is an effective and relevant learning medium to increase interest in reading Indonesian literature among junior high school students.

Abstract

This study discusses the relationship between lyrics and melody in expressing emotional narratives in NIKI Zefanya’s selected songs, namely Backburner, Take a Chance With Me, and Oceans & Engines. The purpose of this study is to explain how lyrics and melody work together to show emotional meaning. The method used in this research is qualitative descriptive. The data used are from the lyrics and musical elements of the three songs. This study uses lyrical analysis and musical semiotics to identify language and music features that express emotions. Results indicate that metaphor, hyperbole, and irony are the most frequently used figurative devices in the lyrics. Tonal variation, rhythm, and harmony further enhance the emotional expression conveyed in the songs. The combination of these elements creates a strong emotional connection between the songs and the listeners. This study gives a better understanding of how emotions are built through the combination of lyrics and melody in popular music.
