Abstract

This study analyzes the correlation of smoking behavior and general health status of respondents and explores individual characteristics as determinant of individual becoming a smoker in Indonesia. This study utilizes data from Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS) on 2000 and 2007. Correlation analyzes and probit regression are the main estimation strategy in this study. There is negative correlation between smoking behavior and general health status of respondents. This finding implies that smokers tend to report their general health status are not good. From the probit regression for IFLS data in 2000 and 2007, it is found there is inverse relationship between smoking behavior and educational level. This imply that individual with primary educational level tend to be smoker with higher probability than individual with higher educational level. Corresponding with income level and housing status, this study finds that smoking behavior in Indonesia related with individual with lower income level.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the factors causing the poverty rate in Indonesia, both positive and negative impacts. There are three variables used in this study including HDI (Human Development Index), corruption (the amount of convicted corruption), and macro-economic indicators (inflation, GDP per capita, population). The variable of macro-economic indicators functioned as the control variable. To his study used panel data method consisting of the data from 2009 to 2013of 28 provinces in Indonesia. The model of poverty in Indonesia can be explained by Fixed Effect GLS model after passing the model selection and classic assumption collision testing. The results showed that among the three indicators, only the variable of GDP per capita having an insignificant effect on the poverty rate. Other factors have significant effects on thepoverty rate. There are two effects including positive and negative effects. The factors with the ability to reduce the poverty rate in Indonesia areHDI (greater effects in the provinces outside Sumatra and Java-Bali), inflation and population. Only the variable of corruption have a positive effect on the increasing poverty rate in Indonesia. The government needs to actively realize the alleviation of poverty program through human development in all provinces of Indonesia.

Abstract

The paper analyzes subject’s behavior in evolutionary process of entry game. The experiment is designed to analyze the behavior of the subject. The experiment is set in sequential entry games. Process of the game was conducted under asymmetric information, uncertainty, payoff perturbation and random matching. The subjects of the experiment were students of the Universitas Udayana, Bali, Indonesia. Subjects who play as new-entrance firms tend to choose “stay-out” strategy when the uncertainty and the amount of loss increase. Meanwhile, the subjects who play as an incumbent firm, which set to have more information about the game (market) rather than the new-entrances, most of the time abuse their position by choose “threat” strategy, which not a credible strategy for some of them. Experimental studies shows that New-entrance tend to weight more on lost when the risk increase (from risk averse setting to risk seeking setting), and tend to choose sure value over a lotteries although the expected value from lotteries is higher or the same. These findings support the reason that Indonesian youngsters tend to choose a job as a PNS or employee of existing firms. The results also support the reason that Indonesian businessman is more willing to open a new business if they have a guarantee for their losses.

Abstract

At present, inclusive growth is a major issue in economic development. Inclusive growth encourages individuals to access education, health and other components that support a better standard of living. In East Java, high economic growth is followed by a high level of income inequality. The role of government is needed to encourage more quality growth through investment financing in the form of education and health investments. The purpose of this study is (i) to determine the relationship between financing of human capital investment and economic growth and (ii) to determine the impact of financing human capital investment on growth inclusiveness in East Java. The analysis method uses simultaneous regression method with two main equations. The findings show that financing of human capital investment has a significant effect on economic growth. This means that human capital investment can be used as an alternative policy to encourage economic growth in East Java. However, there is a problem that only a certain percentage of people with high levels of education, health and purchasing power enjoy economic growth. The second finding explains that inclusiveness can occur if the government encourages the effectiveness of financing the education sector which is still limited to increasing quantity but weak in the quality and productivity of the education sector. So that the existing human resource capacity is not able to encourage the creation of growth inclusiveness in East Java.
