Abstract

This study aims to analyze the ethics of tabligh (Islamic preaching) among muballigh in the Greater Bandung area, focusing on moral values, professionalism, and social responsibility in delivering Islamic messages. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, in-depth interviews were conducted with active muballigh such as Tata Sukayat, Abdul Mujib, Mukhlis Aliyudin, and Tantan Taqyudin. The findings reveal three main dimensions of tabligh ethics: (1) ethical message delivery, emphasizing honesty, gentleness, and wisdom; (2) personal ethics of the muballigh, reflecting sincerity, exemplary behavior, and noble character; and (3) social and media ethics, which require responsibility for public impact and sensitivity to digital contexts. The study proposes a conceptual model called Integrative Tabligh Ethics, which unites spiritual, social, and professional values in Islamic preaching. The implications highlight the need for continuous ethical training and the establishment of a professional code of ethics for muballigh, ensuring that tabligh serves as a means of spreading Islam as a rahmatan lil ‘alamin (mercy to all creation).

Abstract

Explores the communication of Islamic values through written media as a form of dakwah bil-qalam. The advancement of printing and digital technology has transformed human ways of thinking and communicating, including in delivering religious messages. Komaruddin Hidayat’s 250 Wisdoms presents a series of reflective aphorisms that express moral and spiritual teachings (amar ma’ruf nahi munkar) in a simple yet profound manner. This research aims to identify the macro structure (themes) and micro structure (semantic meaning) of the tabligh messages within the text. Using Van Dijk’s discourse analysis model and a qualitative approach, the study applies textual interpretation and literature review. The findings reveal that 250 Wisdoms conveys tabligh messages both explicitly and implicitly through syntactic, stylistic, and rhetorical structures. The study concludes that the book serves as an effective medium of Islamic propagation, delivering messages that are reflective, communicative, and humanistic bridging spiritual teachings with the realities of modern life.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of the religious television drama Tukang Bubur Naik Haji The Series on public awareness in paying zakat, infaq, and sadaqah (ZIS) among the residents of Cikeruh Village, Jatinangor District, Sumedang Regency. The research applies a quantitative correlational method using survey data collected from 94 respondents selected through proportionate stratified random sampling. The results show that the data are normally distributed, fulfilling the assumptions for linear regression analysis. The findings reveal that the message conveyed in the soap opera significantly affects public awareness of ZIS. Partial correlation analysis indicates a low correlation with zakat (r = 0.333), a strong correlation with infaq (r = 0.655), and a very strong correlation with sadaqah (r = 1.000). The coefficient of determination (Adjusted R² = 1.000) demonstrates that the message variable explains 100% of the variance in ZIS awareness. The study concludes that Tukang Bubur Naik Haji The Series serves as an effective medium for Islamic preaching (da’wah) through mass media, successfully combining entertainment and moral education. This research highlights the important role of religious media in shaping moral behavior and fostering social-religious awareness in contemporary Muslim society.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the response of Vespa SIDAT Club members to the monologic khitobah (religious speech) activities regularly conducted as a form of spiritual development within the community. Initially known as a street-based group with a negative public image, the Vespa SIDAT Club underwent social transformation through a community-based da’wah approach. The research employed a descriptive quantitative method, using observation, questionnaires, and documentation for data collection. Findings indicate that the monologic khitobah sessions were well-executed and positively received by club members. Participants showed high levels of attention, both spontaneous and intentional, with primary motivations including the desire to gain religious knowledge and general understanding. Acceptance of the preacher, content, and delivery method was notably strong, reflecting trust and active engagement. Although comprehension of the material was moderate, there were signs of internalization of Islamic values in members’ daily lives. The study concludes that monologic khitobah is an effective da’wah strategy for nurturing character and spirituality within street-based communities. Recommendations are offered to club organizers to enhance the quality of the sessions and to members to improve focus during activities for optimal spiritual development outcomes.

Abstract

This study examines how the WhatsApp group Kopdar Masjid BDG Raya operates as a civic micro-network that reshapes mosque-based Islamic participation among urban youth engaged in the hijrah movement in Greater Bandung. Using virtual ethnography and one-year observation (July 2023–June 2024), the research explores how religious messaging, emotional resonance, and social intimacy are constructed and maintained in everyday group interaction. The findings show that daily spiritual prompts, repentance narratives, and offline gatherings foster a collective moral journey rooted in transformation and belonging. Rather than solely distributing da‘wa content, the group nurtures trust, accountability, and coordinated mosque-based activities that deepen civic religiosity. While the group demonstrates stability and active participation, it is not without limitations. Informants noted some content fatigue and silent readership patterns, as well as subtle frictions when mosque administrators differed in da‘wa orientation or program intensity. These limitations suggest that digital hijrah activism relies on negotiated interaction, ongoing trust-building, and careful coordination with offline mosque authorities. This paper contributes to the study of digital Islamic movements by highlighting the evolving role of WhatsApp as a medium for sustaining spiritual commitment, facilitating civic bonds, and navigating the informal structures of religious authority in contemporary Indonesian cities.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the trend of television da'wah studies in Indonesia using a systematic literature review (SLR) approach. A total of 153 articles were initially identified, of which 20 articles met the inclusion criteria and were included in the final analysis of television da'wah published in the 2009–2023 period. The analysis uses the selection, classification of themes, and synthesis of findings. The results of the study show that 65% of articles still focus on the conceptual aspects of television da'wah, especially related to history, the characteristics of television as a da'wah medium, and the role of da'wah actors. Meanwhile, 25% of the research focused on the issue of the commodification of da'wah including the formation of new religious authorities and audience responses to television da'wah content that tends to prioritize entertainment over educational functions. In contrast, only 10% of the studies examined the use of information and communication technology in television da'wah, showing a significant research gap. These findings have theoretical implications for the need to develop a framework for studying television da'wah that is not only oriented to normative approaches and media political economy, but also integrates communication technology perspectives. Practically, this study provides recommendations for media practitioners and producers of Islamic religious programs to optimize the use of digital technology to improve the quality, interactivity, and educational function of Islamic religious programs on television. The novelty of this research lies in the systematic mapping of the technological gap in Islamic religious programs on Indonesian television, which can be the basis for further research and development of Islamic religious programs on television that are adaptive to the digital era.

Abstract

This study aims to explore in depth the role of moral critical thinking in facing contemporary challenges in da'wah, particularly in the context of spiritual counselling. Using a qualitative approach, this study examined the subjective experiences of da'wah practitioners, spiritual counsellors and religious leaders through semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions and document analysis. Through thematic analysis, the study sought to identify major emergent themes related to the application of moral critical thinking in da'wah practice. The primary goal of this study is to emphasise the importance of moral critical thinking in ensuring that da'wah remains an effective tool for social transformation in the modern era, particularly in the face of challenges such as globalisation, pluralism, and rapid technological development. The findings highlight the significance of moral critical thinking in tackling modern issues in da'wah from a spiritual counselling approach. Through in-depth analysis of data collected from interviews, focus group discussions, and document analysis, several key themes emerged, highlighting the need for da'wah practitioners to develop critical thinking skills in navigating the complexities of the digital age, addressing social injustices, and fostering peace and resilience. By integrating moral critical thinking with spiritual counselling, da'wah practitioners can effectively address contemporary challenges, promote ethical engagement, and make meaningful contributions to the spiritual and social well-being of individuals and communities.
