Abstract

This study aimed to determine the improvement of students' critical thinking abilities through the application of edmodo's assisted discovery learning model. The study was conducted on students of class XI MIPA 2 high school 2018/2019. This study used a true experimental design in the form of a pre-test and post-test control group design. Sampling was done by a cluster random sampling technique. Data collection used reasoned multiple choice test instruments and questionnaires. The result of test analysis of students' critical thinking skills showed that the average post-test value of the experimental class was lower than the control class. The N-gain test result showed that the magnitude of the increasing of the experimental class was 0.43 lower than the control class which is equal to 0.57. The application of edmodo assisted discovery learning model had a positive effect on students' critical thinking abilities with a low category as indicated by the correlation coefficient of 0.37 and the magnitude of the influence given is 14.08%. The conclusion of this study is the application of edmodo assisted discovery learning model can improve students' critical thinking skills. Furthermore, students agree to use edmodo's assisted discovery learning model for acid base learning.

Abstract

Information gained from lecturers of organic chemistry study program in chemical education Riau University, student activities and learning outcomes are still relatively low. The researchers believe that contructivism -based students’ worksheet as a new learning method is needed to overcome the problem. The study was conducted using the application of contructivism-based students worksheet in organic chemistry  II  subject to increase students activities and their learning outcomes. The data were collected by observation and test. Statistics descriptive qualitative and quantitative were used to analyze the data. The data of learning outcomes were analyzed by Shapiro- Wilks normality, Wilcoxon hypothesis test and paired samples test. The result showed that average values of student activity for each subject namely aldehyde-ketones, carboxylic acids, amines and free radicals were at 37%, 37%, 30%, 36%. The result from wilcoxon and paired samples test, with significant test 0,000 < 0,05 showed that student learning outcomes on organic chemistry II subject by constructivism-based students’ worksheet was improved, It can be seen from average value of the pre-test and post-test were at 19.77; 72.15, respectively.

Abstract

Critical thinking skills are important competencies that need to be developed in chemistry learning. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the guided discovery-based thermochemistry module in developing critical thinking skills based on gender differences. The subject of this research was 76 females and 20 males of class XI Mathematics and Nature Science from three high schools in Ponorogo, Indonesia. This study used one school for each category, namely high, medium, and low. The research method used a quasi-experimental design with one group pretest-posttest. The data analysis technique used T-test with SPSS 21 software. The result showed that the average increase in student scores or normality gain score (n-gain) was 0.5050 to 0.6362, which means students' critical thinking skills improved after the implementation of guided discovery-based thermochemistry modules. T-test result in high category schools obtained T count > T table (2.142> 2.032), which showed that there are significant differences between the critical thinking skills of female and male students. Meanwhile, T count and T table in medium category school were 1.353 and 2.034, respectively. T count and T table in low category school respectively 1.106 and 2.068. Analysis of T-test results in medium and low school categories can be written -T table < T count < T table, is means there is no significant differences between the critical thinking skills of female and male students. Thus, guided discovery-based thermochemistry modules are effectively applied to high, medium and low school categories.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop pop up book on Chemical in Household topic.  Method of the study used Research and Development by 4-D stages model; define, design, develop and disseminate. Validation sheet and practically questionnaire were the instrument to collect the data. The pop up book was validated by four experts, 2 lecturers from the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Negeri Padang, 1 lecturer of FBS Fine Arts, Universitas Negeri Padang and 1 junior high school science teacher. The practicality of the instructional materials was carried out on 1 science teacher and 27 eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 21 Padang. The data obtained were analyzed by using Cohen Kappa Formula. The validity test of the  Pop Up book  obtained an average value of kappa 0.87 moment with a very high category and a practicality test for the book based on the results of data analysis from teachers’ and student questionnaires. The response of teachers’ questionnaires obtained a 0.89 kappa moment value with a very high practicality category.  The response of students’ questionaires got an average moment value of kappa 0.83 with a very high practicality category. The result also showed that the Pop Up book can increase students' interest to learn and understand science lessons in junior high school level.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the 21st century skills of students in learning chemical equilibrium with the Flipped Classroom-Collaborative Problem Solving model. Flipped Classroom is a learning model that students learn first outside the classroom through video, then carry out active activities in class such as discussions, presentations, making posters, and doing practicum. Collaborative problem solving is done when students discuss in solving problems for each learning activity. The research method used descriptive qualitative method. Data collection techniques were: observation, interviews, questionnaires, and reflective journals. Data analysis consisted of several stages, namely data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and verification or conclusions. Based on data analysis, this learning model made students active in learning and also made the students learn independently outside the classroom using mobile learning and searching some sources of references. In addition, students were actively involved in problem solving discussions, presentations, making projects, and practicums that were designed by students themselves. Thus it can be concluded that the Flipped Classroom-Collaborative Problem Solving learning model can train and grow students critical thinking skills, creativity and innovation skills, communication skills, and collaborative skills in learning chemical equilibrium.

Abstract

ICT learning media mostly emphasize students content and motivation. The emphasis on protecting the environment as a form of development of sustainable living awareness is often considered not significant. Accordingly, many youth students begin to lose development of sustainable living awareness. This study aimed to produce and evaluate a learning media based on games in Android mobile learning- Chemsdro (Chemistry in Android) oriented to Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) on the topic rate of reaction. Characteristic  of Chemsdro Learning Media was the topic of rate of reaction created in the form of games that embedded in android mobile phones with game characters who have a mission to protect the environment. This learning tool was designed to give motivation for students to care about the environment. This research was Research and Development model, it was adopted the steps from Thiagarajaan including define, design, develop, and dissemination steps. The subjects of this study were students grade XI of SMA 1 Kendal. The product validation showed that the Chemsdro learning media was a very appropriate category to use with the Aiken V coefficient of 0.9. Student assessment of Chemsdro learning media also showed a good category.
