Abstract

Western Qur'anic scholarship has progressively abandoned Orientalist paradigms of textual plagiarism, relocating the scripture within the dynamic epistemic space of Late Antiquity. This study critically systematizes Holger M. Zellentin’s trialogical framework, evaluating the methodological tension between robust historical contextualization and the acute risk of textual over-fitting. Utilizing an elaborative-critical qualitative methodology, this research conducts a hermeneutic reading and cross-cultural thematic triangulation of Zellentin’s foundational corpus, specifically analyzing his longitudinal tracing of late antique legal codes and prophetic narratives. The analysis demonstrates that Zellentin successfully elevates the Qurʾan to the status of an active reformer that critically integrates and supersedes Judeo-Christian traditions. By mapping Qur'anic penal injunctions and incest prohibitions against Justinian decrees and Syriac marriage laws, and juxtaposing the miracles of Jesus against the polemical Toledot Yeshu, Zellentin provides granular evidence of a sophisticated textual trialogue. Nevertheless, this relentless genealogical tracking forces a strict dependency on external biblical and Byzantine antecedents. Such microscopic intertextuality inadvertently flattens the scripture’s internal prophetological architecture, reducing its sovereign theological pronouncements to reactive editorial synthesis and neglecting its intrinsic structural unity. Ultimately, this research advocates for a methodological equilibrium that incorporates the pluricultural debates of the Late Antique milieu without subordinating the Qurʾan’s independent theological rationale and absolute distinctive nature (Eigengesetzlichkeit) to its historical precursors.

Abstract

Living Qur'an scholarship has largely focused on locally bounded communities, whereas digital religion studies have paid limited attention to the reception of sacred texts in online environments. This article examines the One Day One Juz (ODOJ) community in Indonesia as a digital living Qur'an phenomenon, investigating how digitally mediated Qur'anic recitation reshapes religious practice, communal identity, and collective social action. Using a hybrid digital ethnographic approach, the study combines participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and platform document analysis, with data analysed thematically through the proposed Digital Living Qur'an (DLQ) framework. The findings demonstrate that ODOJ institutionalises daily Qur'anic recitation through digital peer accountability, extends Qur'anic practice across interconnected digital platforms, constructs a distinctive symbolic ecosystem, and mobilises nationwide social action despite tensions between ikhlāṣ and riyāʾ, quantity and quality, and democratisation and standardisation. The study argues that these dynamics cannot be fully explained by either conventional Living Qur'an scholarship or digital religion theory alone. It therefore proposes Digital Living Qur'an (DLQ) as a new analytical framework that integrates both perspectives to explain the reception of the Qur'an in digitally mediated communities. Beyond Indonesia, this framework offers a transferable model for analysing comparable digital scripture communities across the Muslim world.

Abstract

Iṣlāḥ is a key Qur'anic concept that signifies comprehensive reform across human life. Its interpretation, however, is often limited to repairing damage or reconciling disputes, leaving its broader semantic relations insufficiently explored. This study examines the meaning of iṣlāḥ and its derivatives in the Qur'an using an Encyclopedic Semantic approach and analyzes their implications for human life. Employing qualitative library research with descriptive-analytical methods, the study traces the diachronic and synchronic development of the concept. The findings reveal that iṣlāḥ and its derivatives occur 180 times in 41 forms across 54 surahs. Its basic meaning refers to improvement, the removal of corruption, and the restoration of proper order as the opposite of fasād. In the pre-Qur'anic period, iṣlāḥ was associated with peace, security, conflict resolution, and social welfare; in the Qur'anic period, it expanded into spiritual, moral, familial, and social dimensions; while in the post-Qur'anic period, it developed toward reform, reconciliation, balance, and the common good. The resulting semantic network positions iṣlāḥ as a comprehensive principle encompassing spiritual transformation, ethical conduct, social harmony, justice, family development, and the protection of vulnerable groups. This study contributes to Qur'anic semantic studies by proposing an encyclopedic framework for understanding iṣlāḥ as a holistic paradigm of reform oriented toward justice, harmony, and the common good.
