Abstract

This research was aimed to discover the traditional knowledge of Enggano people when using plants as concoction after giving birth. Data was collected through in depth interview, open-ended, and literature studies. The results showed that Enggano people used specific plants as concoction in childbirth process. There were two types of the concoction. The first was used after giving birth to 40 days, jarak pagar or tiarak (Jatropha curcas L.). The second was used after 40 days to 60 days or after recovery, such as dukung anak (Phyllanthus niruri Linn.), kumis kucing (Orthosiphon stamineus Benth.), temu lawak (Curcuma xanthoriza Roxb.), alang-alang (Imperata cylindrica (L) P. Beauv.), banana (Musa sp.), kencur (Kaempferia galanga L.), turmeric (Curcuma longa L.), and ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe). Results from our literature studies confirmed the efficacy of plants used by Enggano people is scientifically acceptable. Further study on phytochemical aspects of these medicial plants is therefore required to be carried out.

Abstract

Two quantitative traits, cherry and green bean characters are the important phenotypic selection in coffee breeding practice. The important well-known character from coffee markets is cherry and bean size. In this study, 43 genotypes of coffee were collected from four districts in East Kalimantan i.e. Kutai Kertanegara, Kutai Timur, Berau dan Paser Utara. The objective of this study was to identify cherry and green bean character using quantitative trait locus (QTL) molecular marker, genetic variation from developed alleles, cluster analysis and association analysis of molecular marker, and phenotype observation. Based on polymorphic information content (PIC) of primers used in this study, the genetic variation was low. Based on cluster analysis, two major groups were identified. The first group corresponds to Arabika that consisted of 3 districts, Kutai Timur, Berau and Paser Utara. The second group correspond to Robusta mostly from Kutai Kertanegara.Significant association of primer markers M480 and M312 with QTL has suggested that they can be used as specific primers linked to size of cherry and green bean.Furthermore, they were potential marker assisted breeding in coffee breeding program.

Abstract

A study of the distribution and ecology of Corypha utan Lamk. (gewang) within the natural habitat of savana ecosystem at Usapisonba'i village area, Kecamatan Nekamese, Kabupaten/Regency Kupang, East Lesser Sunda Islands was conducted to gain an understanding factors controlling distribution and dynamics populations of the species. Three plots with total of 2.1 ha were established at different sites. Reconnaissence throughout the study area revealed that gewang grows in the lowlands below 200 m altitude, but away from the immmediate vicinity of the sea. Populations were studied within different savana types. It was concluded that gewang appears to be relatively associated to the open areas. The abundance of gewang within the study area formed the main savana vegetation as savanna gewang type. Distribution pattern of gewang within the study area tend to be concentrated at the lower part of the plots in particular at relatively flat areas. Examination of seedling and sapling densities in relation to parent trees revealed a large number of propagules fallings to disperse, and in consequence tendencies toward dumb distributions. The seedlings tend to grow under dead parent tree and or at flat of lower areas. Based on the population structure, gewang revealed has good regeneration strategy with high population of younger stages.

NANDA UTAMI. 1986.Pollination in Metroxylon sagu. Berita biologi 3(5): 229 - 231. Inflorescence morphology, flowering biology and insect visitors of sago palm (Metroxylon sagu Rottb.) were observed in Pandeglang, West Java.Sago palm is monoceous plant and self pollinated. However, insect visitors appear to play an important role for fruit setting. It was showed that the number of fruits setting in isolated inflorescence was smaller than in unisolated inflorescence. Some insect visitors recorded were Apis indica, Trigona iridipennis Ryghium haemorrhoidale.and Drosophylla melanogaster

Abstract

Protease is an enzyme that can hydrolyze protein into simpler compounds, i.e peptides and amino acids. Microbial Proteases have the  potency to be applied in industries such as detergents, skins, silver recovery, dairy, baking, beverages and pharmaceutical industries. These hydrolytic enzyme are efficiently involved in the food industry to increase the nutritional value, digestibility, palatability, flavour and reducing allergenic compounds as well as in the management of domestic and industrial wastes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the ability of Stenotrophomonas sp. isolated from Mount Bromo, East Java in producing protease. Protease activity of the bacterial isolate was qualitatively determined by formation of a clear zone surrounded their colonies on media containing skim milk (1%). We analyzed its  proteolic activity against some effects of the incubation period, pH, temperatures and addition of monovalent and divalent metal ionsquantitatively using a spectrophotometer at ? 280 nm.The results showed that the optimum activity after incubation for two days was 315.88 U/ mL. The enzyme has continued to its activity at pH 8 (419.68 U/mL) and maintained its stability at 398.22 U/mL with activities decreased to 94.87%, while its activity at 60°C was 519.86 U/mL and could maintain its stability at 419.58 U/ mL, the activity decreased to 74.75%. The addition of Ca2+ could activated its enzyme activity at the amount of 424.33U/mL, while without addition of the ion its activity was 400.29 U/mL. The addition with ion Mn²+, K+, Na+ and Cu 2+ could act as inhibitors that might reduced the activity of the enzyme.
