Abstract

The study was conducted to analyse genetic diversity of Goffini Finsch Cockatoo (Cacatua goffini Finsch) bird using RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) marker.PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) was performed on DNA samples extracted from 14 birds, using 18 random 10-merprimers and 2 random 12-merprimers. Fourteen out of 20 primers (70 %) successfully amplified DNAfragmens and 11 out of 14 primers (78,57 %) generated 1-2 specific alkies. The result clearly demonstrated that the RAPD marker allows for genetic diversity analyses of these birds in efficiently. Tree of relationship among 14 birds showed that there were two groups in the population ofGoffin 's Cockatoo.

Abstract

MAMAN RAHMANSYAH,1978.Effect of preconditioning treatments on tomato seeds.Berita Biologi 3(9): 473-4 75. The study the effect of preconditioning treatments for tomato seeds on plant growth and production, five thousand tomato seeds were slowly rehydrated from 6 to 12% moisture content. The treated seeds were sown on moist straw paper at low (26°-28°C)and high (26°- 36°C fluctuated temperatures, others were planted after storage for 48 and 60 hours in the in-cubator (40 C).The germination percentages of seeds, pollen fertility, the percentage of fruits developed, the average weight of fruit and the weight of 1000 seeds were evaluated.Plants derived from rehydrating seeds and stored for 48 hours at 40°C gave the best performance on their germination (more than 90%),pollen fertility (95%) and also the highest total fruits harvested but not on fruit and seed weights. The best result of seed treatment were 12% of moisture content and its were stored for 48 hours at 40°C

Abstract

Abstract

The spread of earthworm habitat much larger on the banks of the rivers in Central Kalimantan. The aim of this study was to characterize the habitat of earthworm located on banks of the rivers of Kahayan and Barito. Preparation of soil profile with dimension 1x1 m and a depth of 20 cm was conducted using transect procedure and positioned from dried riverbed up to river embankment. The results showed that earthworms with a larger size identified as Lumbriscus terrestris was mainly found in Kahayan river, while for relatively smaller species, it was found at Barito river identified as Lumbriscus rubellus. The number of L .rubellus populations is more 12 and 522 earthworms per layer than L. terrestris. The shallow of water level for ground water and rough texture was not suitable condition for earthworm habitat at both location. The level of protein and ash content are 30.30 % and 42.78 % respectively and higher compared to L. rubellus i.e 13.28 % and 6.27% respectively.

Abstract

YAYUK RAHAYUNINGSIH SUHARDJONO. 1985. Berita Biologi 3 (3): 104 - 107. The study of insect fauna in the primary, secondary and swamp forest floor had been done in the Wanariset forest, East Kalimantan, during tije mid of dry season.September to October 1979. More than 18,000 specimens were collected by pit fall traps. This material consisted of 87 families belonging to 15 ordines. Based on the feeding habits of the insects caught during the study, 325% were phytophagous specks,29.07% predator-parasites, 20.93% decomposers and YIA undetermined species. The high density was shown by Entomobryidae, Sminttraridae and Fonrnkidae.

Abstract

Diversity and ecological distributions of amphibians in Berambai Waterfall area, East Kalimantan have never been known. The purposes of this study were to determine the diversity of amphibian species in relation to environmental conditions and the vertical-horizontal distribution. A total of 109 amphibians were captured using methods of the transect and the visual encounter survey for 20 days on two type observation habitats. The results of this study found 18 species from six amphibian families. Based on the number of species, the diversity amphibian index and dominance index have a stable of communities, with the high value of  Shannon-wiener  diversity index (H'),  the evenness  index (E), and the low value of dominance index (D) were 2.26, 0.78, and 0.16, respectively. Horizontal distribution of amphibians in their habitat showed that aquatic amphibian groups were found to be less than 5 m from the river bank, while terrestrial and semi-aquatic amphibians have a distribution of 5?15 m from the river bank. Vertical distribution of Polypedates leucomystax, Polypedates otilophus and Odorrana hosii in vegetation were found from 1.5?2.5 m above ground level, while Ansonia spinulifer, Chalcorana chalconota, Chalcorana raniceps were at a height of 0.5?<1.5 m from ground level. Diversity of amphibian in Berambai Waterfall area related to habitat conditions, while horizontal and vertical distributions are influenced by species, habits and food resources.

Abstract

This study was aimed at describing the forest types and their degradation at buffer zone of Semayang and Melintang lakes,East Kalimantan. The study was carried out in October 1994 by plot method.Within twenty five main plots, 108 tree species belongs to 75 genera and 38 families were recorded.Ouster analysis shows, the plots have high variation in species.By 50 % similarity index, there could be identified five communities (units)in peat swamp forest, eleven units in riparian forest and two units in kerangas forest.Structure, floristic composition and their degradation of communities at each forests are discussed.

Abstract

Tacca leontopetaloides (L.) O. Kuntze has the potential as food alternative source from its tubers and therefore selected for food diversification study. This research was conducted on Kangean island using open-ended interview methods, field observations, purposive sampling and chemical analysis.Tacca leontopetaloides still not much known and utilizated by the local people in East Java. The plant has different local names for each region, such as in Madura they known as "lorkong" and "oto'o", while in Kangean island, known as "to?toan". In Kangean island, local people utilized the tuber to make flour using simple process. The flour was used as a substitute for wheat flour mainly as an ingredient for porridge, cakes ?serpot? and ?eped-eped (omelette)?. The species was generally grow wild in teak garden, so they can be used as an alternative crop under the teak stands. Proximate analysis of Tacca leontopetaloides tubers was also carried out and showed that they contained: 2.67 ? 2.71 % of ash; 6.73 - 7.84 % of protein; 0.43 ? 1.90 % of fat; 0.41 - 0.60 % of crude fibre; 77.09 - 82.65 % of carbohydrate and available energy 352.36 - 365.83 Kcal/100g based on dry weight. Mineral content was also analysed and showed the following value: 173.50 - 173.67 mg/100g of magnesium; 4.00 - 8.69 mg/100g of iron; 69.89 - 87.72 mg/100g of calsium; 904.86 - 966.74 mg/100g of potassium; and 222.59 - 270.46 mg/100g of phosphor. Hence, Tacca leontopetaloides has sufficient nutrient contents from its carbohydrate and mineral.
