Abstract

Lele Dumbo was used to be a superior clariid catfish ardely cultured in Indonesia. Despite its aquaculture success, there was uncertainty about its taxonomic identity, whether it belongs to an African catfish (Clarias gariepinus Burchell 1822) or a hybrid resulted from a hybridization between African catfish C. gariepinus and an Asian catfish C. fuscus. Though lele Dumbo was no longer popular, the genetic improvement program has successfully developed lele Sangkuriang strain, and that have recently been extensively cultivated in Indonesia. As a lele Dumbo strain, the identity of lele Sangkuriang is also uncertain, thus need to be verified. The present study aimed to investigate the similarity of lele Dumbo through morphometric and meristic characterizations using samples of lele Sangkuriang (collected from BBPBAT Sukabumi, BPBAT Cijengkol and PT STP) compared to those of African catfish C. gariepinus introduced from Thailand and Kenya. The characterizations were carried out through measurement of 20 standard morphometric characters and five meristic characters the data obtained were then analyzed using principal component analysis. The results suggested that the values of morphometric and meristic characters of all three samples of lele Sangkuriang were not different from those of African catfish C. gariepinus. Likewise, the results of principal component analysis performed on morphometric and meristic characters also revealed that morphometric and meristic characteristics of all three samples of lele Sangkuriang were not different from those of African catfish C. gariepinus. Those results revealed that biometric characteristic of both lele Dumbo and African catfish C. gariepinus was not different, thus they seem belong to the same species.

Abstract

G. PANGGABEAN, J. HANSON & N. WULIJARNI - SOETJIPTO 1987. The effect of drying on the viability of Citrus seeds. Berita Biotogi 3(7):330 - 332. The effect tesistence drought on the germination of 4 species of the Citrus seeds were studied under the laboratory conditions.The germination of the C.amblycarpa and C. aurantifolia seeds were still high at the moisture content less than 10 %. Meanwhile, the germination of C. grandis seeds were high at 10 % moisture content but the viability of the seeds were low at the moisture content below 10 %.Various methods of drying were investigated on the C. reticulata seeds. The best germination of the seeds were treated prior drying the seeds under the laboratory conditions. The germination of the seeds decreased rapidly under silica gel, dehumidifier and drying in the oven at 40°C.

Abstract

H. SUTARNO, H. ROEMANTYO & E.K. SUPARDIJONO. 1985. Plants with lowly statures in the kitchen gardens in Teluknaga, Citeureup and Pacet. Berita Biologi 3 (2): 49 - 54. Studies on kitchen garden crops of the lower stratum (3m) including climbing plants were carried out in Teluknaga (0-10m), Citeureup (200-500m) and Pacet (600-1400). These studies were aimed at obtaining information on species variation, cultivation and utilization. The species number in those three subdistricts were 14, 36 and 37 species, respectively. Among the most commonly observed crops were chilipepper, pineapple, sugarcane, coco-yam, cassava and taro. The relatively good soil and climatic conditions as well as reasonably large habitants being farmers, the home-gardens in Ci-1 teureup and Pacet enabled the owners to fully utilize their home-gardens for agriculture.

Abstract

Toona sinensisis a plant species included in Meliaceae family.In China, the leaves of T. sinensis are used in Chinese traditional and herbal drugs for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, urethritis,gastric ulcer, enteritis, diarrhea, chronic dysentery,itching, andcancer. Barkis the part of plant that contains phenolic compounds. Phenolic compounds have redox properties that can act as a reducing agent or hydrogen donor so its have antioxidant properties. In this study, four types of solvent were used for partition of T. sinensis bark extract.The fractions were used to examine the effects of solvents on total phenolic content sand antioxidant activity. Total phenolic content of fractions was determined using Folin-ciocalteu reagent while antioxidant activity was carried out using phosphomolybdenum, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging, ferric reducing power and ß-carotene bleaching assay. Results showed that ethyl acetate fraction has the highest content of total phenolic compound (36,42 ± 0,05 mg GAE/g) and the stronggest of antioxidant activity on total antioxidant (34,44 ± 0,03mg AAE/g), DPPH radical scavenging (IC50= 35,23 µg/mL), ferric reducing power (IC50=128,55 µg/mL) and ß-carotene bleaching assay (IC50 fraksi (125,62 µg/mL). Instead of n-hexane fraction has the lowest content of total phenolic compound and the weakest of antioxidant activity of all antioxidant activity assay. It can be concluded that the difference in the polarity of the solvent partitioning lead to differences in total phenolic content and antioxidant activity.

Abstract

MUNAF. 1986.The hosts and species of ticks of the genera Amblyomma, Boophilus and Rhipicephalus recorded parasitizing buffaloes and cattle in Indonesia.Berita Biologi 3 (6) : 287 - 292.About 30 species of mammals,one reptile and Several birds were incriminated as the hosts for seven species of ticks of the genera Amblyomma, Boophilus and Rhipicephalus parasitizing buffa loes artd cattle in Indonesia. Among the ticks, B. microplus and R. pilans: are considered a serious pest to livestocks, whilst A. testudina'rium could become a- potential vector in spreading diseases.A. babirussae was recorded as an endemic species found in Central and South Sulawesi; and R. haemaphysaloides seemed likely to have a limited distribution in the upperpart half of Sumatera only. A key to identify the seven species of ticks listed is given.

Abstract

Penelitian mengenai aspek-aspek biologi remis marga Corbicula yang ada di Indonesia dapat dikatakan masih amat sedikit.Beberapa aspek yang telah dikerjakan antara lain mengenai sistimatiknya (Benthem Jutting 1953 dan Djajasasmita 1977) dan bebeiapa aspek ekologinya oleh Budiman & Djajasasmita (1979). Tulisan ini menguraikan hasil penelitian lanjutan Budiman & Djajasasmita (1979) dengan tekanan pada aspek-aspek sifat kelamin, pemijahan dan pertumbuhan larva remis Corbicula javanica dari perairan sekitar Bogor.

Abstract

Dalam rangka pengunpulan contoh tumbub-tumbuhan di beberapa orang staf Herbarium Bogoriense antara lain telah mengunjungi cagar alam Telaga warna.Dari kunjungan itu diketahui adanya beberapa jenis tanaman bukan aseli Indonesia tumbuh di sekeliling telaga dan sebagian di antaranya rupanya sengaja ditanam. Hal ini mengherankan oleh karena status Telaga Warna hingga kini adalah cagar alam, Cagar alam dalam Undang-Undang No.5 tahun 1967 tentang Ketentuan-ketentuan Pokok Kehutanan, Pasal 3 ayat 3a didefinisikan sebagai " hutan suaka alam yang berhubung dengan keadaan alamnya, termasuk alam hewani dan alam nabati,perlu dilindungi untuk kepentingan ilmu pengetahuan dan kebudayaan ".Definisi itu oleh Nasution (1968) diperjelas dengan menanbahkan bahwa perlindungan itu dilakukan oleh Pemerintah sedemikian rupa sehingga keadaannya tidak berubah,Mereka yang akan memasuki cagar alam harus mempunyai surat izin istimewa,yang memuat antara lain larangan-larangan membawa perlengkapan berburu atau merusak setiap jenis kahidupan liar.

Abstract

The effectiveness of some rhizobial strains as inoculants on the growth of Albizia procera and A. saponaria.Berita Biologi 3(8) 405 - 412.Four experiments have been carried out under green house conditions,using 0.5 gallon plastic pots, filled with 1.5 kg of sterile sands.The experimental design was completely randomized design with five replications.The first and second experiments were implemented on A.procera which consisted of 11 and 9 strains, lasted in 10 weeks respectively.The third and the fourth used 7 strains for each experiment,were implemented on A.saponaria,lasted in 12 and 16 weeks respectively.The results showed that all inoculated plants produced root nodules. In the experiments I and H,good results were demonstrated by strains number 34, 85 and 119, while strain Rsg showed very poor results.Rhizobium which showed poor results were strains Raf 1,Raf 2, Rap, Rss, Ri and Le. In the experiments III and IV, good results were demonstrated by strains 82 and 85,while very poor results were shown by strains Cg and Ri, poor results were shown by strains 34, 119 and Le.

Abstract

Pada berbagai genangan air, dari danau sampai air yahg tertampung pada sehelai daun, sering dijumpai jentik-jentik nyamuk. Di samping itu dalam genangan air yang cukup besamya sering terdapat tumbuh-tumbuhan air yang umumnya merupakan gulma. Sebagai penghuni habitat ail yang sama tidak mengherankan bila terjadi hubungan atau saling pengaruh antara tumbuh-tumbuhan dan jentik-jentik tersebut. Beberapa jenis tumbuh-tumbuhan sudah diketahui mempunyai daya bunuh terhadap jentik-jentik nyamuk. Chara,Nitetta dan Utricularia adalah beberapa kelompok tumbuhan rendah yang mempunyai kemampuan sebagai larvisida (Anonim 1973). Akan tetapi kemungkinan tumbuh-tumbuhan tinggi sebagai pengandung daya laivisida belum pernah dijajaki secara tegas (Sen1941). Kenyataan sering didapatinya tumbuhan ail atau gulma pada bermacam-macam bentuk perairan dan pengamatan perorangan yang menyatakan bahwa terdapat kemungkinan pengaruh gulma akuatik terhadap kemampuan wadah untuk menghasilkan nyamuk, merupakan suatu gejala yang perlu dibuktikan kebenarannya secara ilmiah.Pembuktian ini akan bermanfaat dalam kemungkinan penggunaan gejala ini dalam usaha pengendalian populasi nyamuk.Dalam usaha pembuktian ini yang pertama-tama harus dilakukan ialah mengetahui sifat-sifat kualitatif beberapa gulma akuatik terhadap tempat tumbuh jentik-jentik nyamuk.Menuiut Eussen (wawancara pribadi 1975) diketahui adanya eksudan pada beberapa gulma dan pengaruhnya terhadap organisme lain, sebagai contoh eksudan gulma Imperata cylindrica yang menghambat perkecambahan ketimun dan jagung.Macam eksudan yang dikeluarkan dari tiap jenis gulma tidak sama, begitu pula pengaruh macam-macam eksudan itu terhadap organisme lain.Dalam penelitian ini beberapa jenis gulma akuatik dicoba untuk dicari pengaruhnya terhadap tapak penangkaran nyamuk.Dalam percobaan ini digunakan jenis gulma akuatik yang banyak terdapat dalam pertanian, mudah memencar dan tumbuh dalam lingkungan/keadaan ekologi yang bermacam-macam. Selanjutnya perlu diselidiki adanya beberapa gulma akuatik yang mengeluarkan eksudan yang berlainan, baik sebagai penghambat (larvisida) atau pun sebagai penarik (attractant) dan diharapkan eksudan-eksudan itu mempunyai pengaruh yang berbeda terhadap populasi nyamuk.Untuk membedakan pengaruh gulma terhadap tapak penangkaran nyamuk dari pengaruh faktor-faktor lain yang mungkin mempunyai pengaruh sama, dilakukan beberapa percobaan.Percobaan-percobaan ini mencakup perlakuan dengan menggunakan wadah, lokasi, dan ada tidaknya lumpur.Berdasarkan percobaan pendahuluan dapat disimpulkan bahwa warna ember tidak menunjukkan pengaruh terhadap kemampuan nyamuk untuk berbiak pada ember tersebut. Pada percobaan ini yang dihitung dan dianalisis ialah nyamuk dewasa saja, karena tingkat inilah yang sanggup berbiak, menggigit serta menularkan penyakit dan yang menjadi perhatian manusia (BIOTROP 1975).Dalam hal ini jumlah nyamuk induk (imago), telur dan telur yang menetas menjadi larva tidak dihitung, karena segi-segi tersebut sudah di luar ruang lingkup percobaan. Percobaan ini dimaksudkan sebagai penelitian permulaan untuk mengetahui pengaruh gulma akuatik terhadap kemampuan wadah untuk menghasilkan nyamuk.

Abstract

The development of seedless tomato fruits will be more attractive to consumers and industry. Artificial parthenocarpy can be induced through genetic crossing, hormone application or genetic engineering. Development of parthenocarpic tomatos has been done by inserting parthenocarpy gene, DefH9-iaaM into tomato genome via Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Sixty putative transgenic tomato lines were produced, and three events (lines) have been selected as the best event, i.e. OvR1#14-4, OvM2#10-1, OvM2#6-2. These lines contained the DefH9-iaaM based on PCR test. This research aimed was to determine the insertion patern of DefH9-iaaM gene in the progeny of transgenic tomatos lines. Parent variety Oval and line Cl 6046 were used as control plants. Results indicated that tomatos line OvR1#14-4 was still contained the inserted DefH9-iaaM gene and followed the Mendelian pattern (3:1) based on molecular analyses and Chi-square test results, while the others were not identified. Line OvR1#14-4 was required to be further evaluated for phenotypic and genotypic analyses for the expression of their parthenocarpy.
