Abstract

The presence of invasive alien plant species has been known to cause various negative impacts on ecosystems in theinvaded conservation area. This research aims to identify diversity and distribution pattern of invasive alien plantsspecies in Sempu Island Nature Reserve, and to determine the most influential environmental factors to theirdispersion. The methods used were the combination of quantitative vegetation analysis and rapid assessmenttechnique followed by the principal component analysis. As many as 10 invasive alien plants species (belonging to 7families) have been identified within this conservation area, e.g., Pistia stratoites, Ageratum mexicanum, Vernoniacinerea, Cyperus rotundus, Passiflora foetida, Centotheca lappacea, Eleusine indica, Imperata cylindrica, Hedyotiscorymbosa, and Lantana camara. All invasive alien plant species found in the sampling plots had a clumpeddistribution pattern. The most influential environmental factors to the invasive alien plants dispersion were landslope and distance from shoreline. Keywords: distribution pattern, environmental factors, invasive alien plants, Sempu Island Nature Reserve

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study aimed to quantify the population of Birgus latro in the Batudaka di Togean islands, Central Sulawesi. The research on robber crab was conducted in Batudaka Island, Togean, Tomini Bay, Central Sulawesi. In the study site, 21 plots measuring of 50x50 m2 were created bounded by raffia. Feed in the form of shredded coconut is placed in each plot in the afternoon. At night was performed observations and catchs. In the "base camp" every crab crab carapace caught measured in carapace length and weight. During the study, 277 crabs were caught, consisted of 173 males (62.45%) and 104 (37.55%) females. Based on the formula calculation of Schiller (1992) population figures obtained 821 803 ± 195 030 crabs in Batudaka Island. By regression analysis between carapace length with weight, it was found that the growth of B. latro is negative allometric, i.e., weight gain is faster than the increase length of carapace. The weight gain of female is slightly higher than that of the male. Whether male crab population or female equally composed of 9 age groups. This study showed that 66.7% of male crab and 29.1% of female crab has entered the market size. Keywords: Birgus, crab, carapace

Abstract

ABSTRACTUltisol dominated about 25% of the total land area in Indonesia. It has the potential to be used as agricultural land and shallot plants have a considerable prospect to be cultivated in ultisol soil.  Ultisol generally has not been handled properly. It needs some specific treatments due to the low nutrient contents, caused by the intensive leaching process. One of the effort to overcome the soil quality problems that occur in ultisol soils (high soil acidity, average pH <4.50, high Al saturation, and low macronutrient content such as P, K, Ca, Mg, and organic material content) is treated by the using the soil conditioner such as the supplying of organic materials in the form of compost and biochar. In this work, the biological organic fertilizer was also applied to increase microorganism activity in the soil. The experimental design used in this work was completely random design which has 8 combinations of soil treatment, compost, biochar and bio-organic fertilizer. Soil parameters measured were pH, C-Organic, P-Available, total bacterial population, soil respiration, and phosphomonoesterase enzyme activity. The agronomy parameters of shallot were also measured. The results showed that treatment of compost, biological organic fertilizer, and biochar have significant effect to increase soil microorganism activity in the form of total population of bacteria, soil respiration, P-Available and pH. The treatment also had a significant effect on supporting plant height at 2 and 6 MST, number of leaves at 2 MST, wet weight and dry weight of tubers. Keywords: biochar, bio-organic fertilizer, soil microorganism activity, shallot, ultisol

Abstract

ABSTRACTAntagonistic Interaction between Lactobacillus 5NS and Candida tropicalis. Centrifuged supernatant of medium where Lactobacillus 5NS grown inhibited growth of three strains of Candida tropicalis. The Inhibition activity was detected using paper disc method. When the supernatant was induced with living cells of C. tropicalis Y393 strain, it inhibited the tested yeast strains. Inhibition activities of this supernatant against C. tropicalis Y390, Y391 and Y393 were equivalent to that of phenol at the concentration of 20.56 , 25.02 and 25.04 mg/ml, respectively. However when the supernatant was induced with heated or living cells of Candida tropicalis Y390 and Y391, it did not show any inhibition activity on all yeast strain tested. Thus the data indicates that there may be a specific interaction between Lactobacillus 5NS and C. tropicalis Y393 in which under the induction of specific certain yeast such as C. tropicalis Y393, Lactobacillus 5NS produces a toxin-like that is not spesific for the yeast target. Such interaction between normal flora and patogenic yeast may be happen in the digestive tractus.Key words: Lactobacillus, yeast, Candida tropicalis, antagonist

Abstract

Deltamethrin is an active ingredient of insecticides such as decis, and its common pollutant observe in agricultural soil.  Microbes that able to degrade deltamethrine and produced IAA as plant growth promoting hormone is important to support organic agriculture. The aim of this study was to find deltamethrin degrading bacteria capable of producing IAA and to evaluate  the effect of nitrogen on degradation rate of deltametrin and IAA production. Deltametrin degrading  Bacteria was  isolated from non-organic rice fields around Cibinong Science Center. Deltamethrin degradation ability was evaluated in NMS medium with the addition of a nitrogen source: yeast extract, urea and NPK. Analyses of 16S rDNA showed that deltamethrin degrading bacteria and producing IAA was identified as Pseudomonas sp. PIV-8-2. Nitrogen siginificantly affect the degradation deltametrin rate, but not on  IAA production. Only on the addition of yeast extract and urea significanly  affect to IAA production after 2 days incubation. Keywords: Deltamethrin Degradation, IAA, Pseudomonas sp. PIV-8-2, Farming.

Abstract

ABSTRACTStudy on The Relationship Between Phytoplankton and Current Velocities due to Operationof Jatiluhur Reservoir. High abundance of phytoplankton may create oxygen depletionwithin water column, in which may also lead as a threat to the fisheries activities of floatingcage in the Jatiluhur reservoir. In addition, phytoplankton may also clog the filter within watertreatment plant that is currently using the water from Jatiluhur reservoir. The research objectivewas investigate effects of changing water current velocity to the abundance of phytoplanktonin the Jatiluhur reservoir. Phytoplankton, measured as chlorophyll-a, were sampled at 10 differentsampling points of 0, 4, 8 and 10 m depth. While current water velocities were calculated usingtwo-dimensional multilayer equation. The equation will calculate x and y axis current velocitieswithin different depth of the reservoir. Result shows that in the area in which the currentvelocities higher than 15 cm/s less phytoplankton would be found. These velocities found ifthe operation of water discharge from reservoir was more than 70 m3/s. The research suggeststhat discharging operation from reservoir can be used as an indicator for the early warningsystem for the fisheries activities in the reservoir. Keywords: Jatiluhur reservoir, current velocity, phytoplankton abundance, reservoir operation,two-dimensional multilayer equation
