Cultural studies constitutes an interdisciplinary area critically discussing socio-political contexts of various cultural practices in society. Its focus is on the relation among such cultural practices and the power controlling them. Cultural studies was pioneered by the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies (CCCS) of the University of Birmingham, England, in 1960s. Unlike what has been a tradition in the modern epistemology, cultural studies is concerned with what human emancipation aims at. Therefore, cultural studies does not only refer to a theoretical-conceptual matter but also to the location and critical action in which it manifests itself.

Abstract

"Upin Ipin" animation is a popular children's film series in Indonesia, including Denpasar from 2010-2023. The Upin Ipin animation shows the background of a Malaysian village with its own culture, and the characters who play a role in it can represent the Malay-Malaysian identity and the various tribes that exist in Malaysia. The research used qualitative methods, and data were analyzed using discourse analysis theory and ideology theory. The results show that the issue of Malay-Malaysian identity plays a role in the production of Upin Ipin animation. The identity is visualized through the characters in the story, along with the environment that considers the socio-cultural background of the local Malaysian community. The construction of the environment, socio-cultural life, religion and culture, and language represent the Malaysian identity. This article contributes to the understanding that Upin Ipin animation is not just entertainment but a medium to introduce the Malay-Malaysian cultural identity. Abstract

In the era of globalization, the integration of local cultural elements into modern architecture is becoming increasingly important to maintain cultural identity. Bali, with its rich culture and architectural traditions, offers a variety of elements that can be adapted to enhance the aesthetics and functionality of modern buildings, including bank offices. The main focus of this study is to analyze how Balinese organizational values ??and cultural heritage are reflected in the physical design of bank offices, including layout, building materials, and architectural ornaments to enhance customer interaction and service creativity. The research methods used include a qualitative approach, case studies of bank offices in Bali, field observations, and interviews with architects, bank employees, and customers. The results show that cultural integration in the architectural design of bank offices can strengthen corporate identity, enhance customer experience and interaction, and encourage service innovation. In conclusion, this study emphasizes the importance of considering cultural aspects and organizational values ??in architectural design as an effective way to create an environment that supports service innovation and enriches customer experience and also contributes to cultural preservation. These findings confirm that architecture that reflects organizational culture and local traditions can be an innovative strategy to improve the image and competitiveness of banks in the era of globalization. Abstract

This dissertation which is entitled ‘The Existence of the Jemaah Ahmadiyah (Ahmadiyah Congregation) after Ketapang Tragedy in West Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara’ has been actually inspired by the latently continued sectarian conflict issue resulting from the strong resistance put up by people to its existence. The pressure it has faced has been horizontal, vertical and structural. Based on the background and problem described above, three basic questions are discussed in this study and are formulated as follows: 1) how the existence of Jemaah Ahmadiyah (Ahmadiyah Congregation) after the Ketapang Tragedy in West Lombok is; 2) what strategies are developed to maintain its existence after the Ketapang tragedy; and 3) what are the meanings of its existence after the Ketapang tragedy? The approach of cultural studies, which includes the theory of social segregation, the theory of subaltern and the theory of practice, is used as the theoretical orientation. Qualitative descriptive and interpretative analysis is used as the research method in this study. The data needed were collected by in-depth interview, observation, library research and documentation. Based on the analysis of the results of the study, it is identified that the latent Ahmadiyah conflict occurring in Lombok has been the representation of the history forming the continued religious (Islam) discursive struggle. The claim of truth resulting from the epistemological difference in religious interpretation has been the source of the basic problem. As the characteristics of the religious interpretation developed by what is taught in Ahmadiyah is so autocritic (innovative) in nature that diametrically it extremely contrasts with the people who adhere to authoritarianism; it tends to be theopratical and its rivals tend to be theocentric; as a consequence, it is difficult to unite it and its rivals. After the Ketapang tragedy, the resistance put up to the Jemaah Ahmadiyah is getting socially and culturally segregated and this can be observed in socio-cultural, economic and religious aspects of life. The strategies it has developed to maintain its existence after the Ketapang tragedy are defensive strategy, consolidation strategy, intra-religious dialogue strategy and welfare improving strategy. The polemic of its existence, which used to pertain to theology and philosophy, is now expanding into sociological, cultural and political domains. Theologically, the continued discourse of Ahmadiyah conflict could mean the representation of the struggle of religious views with the epistemological difference as the source. Sociologically and culturally, the continued discourse of Ahmadiyah conflict is the representation of the fact that the local centrism politics is getting stronger. Politically, it might be stated to represent the confusing positions of the State and religions in Indonesia. Furthermore, it might indicate that the civilization war (gasw al-fikr): Islam versus the Western countries (which are identical with Christianity) would occur again. Abstract

Corpus provides a significant amount of data that can be utilised to retrieve actual language use, especially for teaching English for academic purposes. Accordingly, exploring academic English verbs (AEVs) across five disciplines, i.e., tourism, business, linguistics, management, and cultural studies, is essential. Further, it is also crucial to compare AEVs against Coxhead’s Academic Word List (AWL). A personalised corpus was built from 100 Scopus-indexed paper abstracts to achieve these objectives. Subsequently, the AntConc software was employed to retrieve AEVs. The study discovered that the top 50 AEVs varied across five disciplines and had similarities and differences, representing the characteristics and uniqueness of each field of study. The AEVs generated from the established corpus also appeared in Coxhead’s AWL. Consequently, the findings generated by this study are worth teaching, especially to EFL students, to robust the richness of verbs for academic purposes. Consequently, pedagogical implications are also described further in this study. Keywords: academic article abstracts, academic English verbs, corpus linguistics, English for academic purposes

Abstract

Cultural processions in the Central Himalaya are centuries-old practices. These are celebrated in the entire region and all seasons. Further, these processions are well-integrated with nature, places, culture, and society. This paper examines the cultural processions and their historical and spiritual significance in the Central Himalaya. The cultural processions take place when the idols of folk deities both male and female, including Dolies and Nishans, are carried by the devotees from their abodes to other cultural places. The priests, devotees, and a large number of people follow the processions. The Dolies and Nishans are decorated with colourful clothes and ornaments. Musical instruments such as Dhol, Damau, and Bhankore (Ransingha) are played. The devotees sing Jagars (folk songs) and dance. During the processions, all people wear colourful dresses. They walk barefoot about 10-12 kilometers in a day. The time of the profession varies from one day to six months, depending upon the existing culture. The route of the procession is pre-decided. Every day, the procession stays in the next village, which falls on the route and it continues till the procession ends. These processions have high historical importance and lead to spiritual attainment. Keywords: Cultural procession; Pilgrimage; Festival; Jagars; Central Himalaya

Abstract

This comparative study investigates on how Snow White has been portrayed in various media. It draws comparisons between the 2012 film Snow White and The Huntsman and the traditional fairy tale Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, focusing on how her strength and agency are depicted. Snow White is portrayed in classic storybooks as a helpless, innocent character who needs other people's protection. This version of the narrative is frequently based on the Brothers Grimm version (MA Arthawati, 2023). On the other hand, the film presents a rebellious reworking. Snow White shows herself to be a proactive heroine who determines her own course in life. The analysis looks at this change and emphasizes how Snow White is portrayed in the movie as a valiant warrior who is actively against evil, which subverts conventional gender stereotypes (Riris, 2023). Through examining these contrasting portrayals, the study sheds light on the evolving cultural expectations surrounding female characters in fairy tales and their modern adaptations. It reveals how Snow White's characterization reflects a shift towards more empowered and active heroines, resonating with contemporary audiences who seek narratives that challenge traditional tropes of femininity. Throughout looking at these diverse portrayals, the research shows how cultural expectations about female characters in fairy tales and their modern versions have changed over time. As a result, it resonates with modern audiences who are looking for stories that subvert conventional notions of femininity. Snow White's portrayal, it turns out, represents a shift towards more powerful and active heroines. Keywords: Characterization, Cultural and Society, Fairy Tale, Film, Snow White

Abstract

The government's strategy to promote desa adat (customary village) materialized through the implementation of Regional Regulation Number 4 of 2019 in Bali, fostering a dynamic interaction aimed at enhancing desa adat resilience. This study examines the dynamic forms of interaction between these institutions. Data were obtained utilizing a qualitative approach, including literature reviews, observations, and interviews. The data analysis results are described using theories of hegemony, ideology, discourse, and the power of knowledge. The research concludes that diverse forms of interaction between the government and desa adat encompass involvement in the formulation of desa adat regulations; participation in religious rituals and cultural activities; and relevance in financial governance. Theoretical findings suggest that power operates through interactions to assert dominance over desa adat by spreading discourse, knowledge, and ideological strategies. This article provides valuable insights for shaping regulations that better align with the identity and autonomy of desa adat. Abstract

Management and engineering of traffic and road transportation are programs initiated by the Gianyar Regency government with the aim of achieving an integrated transportation system that ensures safety, security, order, smoothness, regularity, success, utility, comfort, and efficiency throughout the Ubud sub-district and its surrounding areas. This policy aligns with the community’s purchasing power, public interest aspects (road users), environmental sustainability, spatial planning, and advancements in knowledge and technology. The research addresses the following issues: 1) how is the implementation of policies on traffic management, road transportation engineering, and parking in Ubud sub-district, 2) what factors hinder the implementation of traffic management, road transportation engineering policies, and parking in Ubud sub-district? The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, using the theory proposed by Merilee S. Grindle. The findings indicate that the management and engineering of traffic and road transportation, as well as parking, are not yet one hundred percent effective due to inadequate infrastructure, such as parking spaces for residents, workers, and tourists, and a lack of personnel both from the police and the Gianyar Regency Transportation Agency. Abstract

This research seeks to critically examine the commodification of traditional Balinese wedding ceremonies that occur at Taman Prakerti Bhuana, which offers Balinese wedding services in a more attractive and prestigious package. The study aims to understand how sacred cultural practices, rich in spiritual meaning, are transformed into commercial products focused on consumer satisfaction and economic gain. The issues will be addressed by answering the following research questions: (1) What is the form of commodification of traditional Balinese wedding ceremonies at Taman Prakerti Bhuana, (2) Why does the commodification of traditional Balinese wedding ceremonies occur at Taman Prakerti Bhuana, and (3) What are the implications of the commodification of traditional Balinese wedding ceremonies at Taman Prakerti Bhuana. These issues are analyzed using the theories of religious commodification and Bourdieu's theory of practice, employing qualitative research methods. Data collection techniques include literature study, observation, and interviews, followed by interpretative analysis. The research findings indicate that this phenomenon leads to the degradation of traditional values such as "menyama braya," a concept of togetherness and mutual cooperation in Balinese society. The commodification of these ceremonies also impacts the social dynamics of the local community, reducing active community participation and eroding the spirit of mutual cooperation. Ultimately, this study highlights the challenges faced in preserving Balinese culture, where traditional rituals that undergo changes to meet market demands risk losing their authenticity and original meaning.
