Cultural studies constitutes an interdisciplinary area critically discussing socio-political contexts of various cultural practices in society. Its focus is on the relation among such cultural practices and the power controlling them. Cultural studies was pioneered by the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies (CCCS) of the University of Birmingham, England, in 1960s. Unlike what has been a tradition in the modern epistemology, cultural studies is concerned with what human emancipation aims at. Therefore, cultural studies does not only refer to a theoretical-conceptual matter but also to the location and critical action in which it manifests itself.

Abstract

The general election directly conducted to vote for the regent and vice regent (Pemilihan Kepala Daerah, abbreviated to Pilkada) by the people in Badung Regency in 2005 was the first one. The people’s direct involvement in the local political life moved highly dynamically. The struggle for power by various strengths affected various dimensions of the people’s lives; therefore, it is interesting to investigate the local political dynamics in the Pilkada directly conducted in Badung Regency in 2005 in the perspective of cultural studies. There are three problems formulated in this study. They are (1) what was the dynamics of the Pilkada directly conducted in Badung Regency in 2005 like?; (2) how the relation of strengths affected the local political dynamics in the Pilkada directly conducted in Badung Regency in 2005?; (3) what were the implications and meanings of the local political dynamics of the Pilkada directly conducted in Badung Regency in 2005? The results of the study show that fluctuative changes took place continuously with regard to the form and functions of societal structure. Culturally, the people’s ideology changed from being mono centric into being multi centric. The relation of strengths became segmented into three main strengths forming a new formation of strength referred to as trisula. This led to an institutional configuration, differentiation of power and locality sedimentation, and provided meanings to competition and tolerance, emancipatory, political comodification, adaptive leadership and local democratic cultural strengthening. Keywords: dynamics, local politics, and direct pilkada in Badung Regency

Abstract

Cultural tourism is the largest industry in the world and the fastest-growing sector. This has caused many cultural heritages in the form of temples to be used as tourist attractions, including the Puncak Penulisan Temple in Sukawana Village. As a result of state intervention and capitalism through tourism, it has resulted in the expansion of functions and transformation of cultural values at Puncak Penulisan Temple. Based on the background of this problem, this research aims to (1) analyze the process of commodification Puncak Penulisan Temple, (2) understand the ideology behind the commodification of Puncak Penulisan Temple, and (3) examine the implications of the commodification of Puncak Penulisan Temple. This research was designed using qualitative methods with a critical cultural studies approach. Data collection was carried out through interviews, observations, and literature studies relevant to the research title. Then the collected data was analyzed using qualitative descriptive analysis. The theories used to analyze research problems are the theory of genetic structuralism (Pierre Bourdieu). The results of the research show that the practice of commodifying the Cultural Heritage of Puncak Penulisan Temple has gone through a long process. This is caused by changes in habits (habitus) such as open attitudes of the community, changes in thought patterns and economic orientation, as well as the potential of the Sukawana Village community in the form of cultural and natural heritage. The commodification process is society's response to the struggle between globalization and capitalism through tourism with society's cultural values. The ideology behind the commodification of the Puncak Penulisan Temple's cultural heritage is the ideology of capitalism and the ideology of preservation. The commodification of Puncak Penulisan Temple's cultural heritage has implications for cultural, economic, and social aspects that influence the lives of the people of Sukawana Village. Abstract

This research analyzes political communication in voter participation during the 2020 simultaneous regional head elections in Bangli Regency amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. It examines forms of political communication, underlying ideology, and implications. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews and document studies, applying theories such as persuasive communication, critical hegemony, social practice, and power-knowledge relations. Findings indicate that online political communication during the pandemic facilitated interaction between election actors and voters but had drawbacks. Issues included limited election information, outdated voter data, and inaccurate permanent voter lists. Additionally, budget constraints, insufficient personal protective equipment, and health protocol violations were significant challenges. The ideology behind political communication was the hegemony of community figures, political elites, and successful teams over voters, resulting in power-knowledge relations and transactional political practices. Elderly and disabled voters in mountainous areas were particularly marginalized. Practical findings show that online political communication limited voter references, reducing freedom in choosing candidates. Theoretical findings indicate that online political communication disrupts social interaction during Covid-19, and hegemony theory is effectively applied in the Bangli community, which practices local culture. However, power- knowledge relation theory cannot be universally applied, as traditional figures dominate voters and the central executive board determines coalitions and candidate pairs. Abstract

Sade is a hamlet inhabited by the Sade indigenous peoples in Central Lombok. The culture of the ancient Sasak tribe is still implemented by the Sade people to this day. One of them is the Nyèsèk tradition. Nyèsèk is a tradition of weaving cloth which is also a symbol of maturity and a condition for marriage for women of the Sasak Sade tribe. This tradition was originally private because it was only inherited to girls, but as the times rolled in, the tradition of weaving this cloth then underwent a transformation from being private to a side job for housewives in Sade hamlet. The determination of Sade hamlet as a Tourism Village in 1989 made this tradition undergo a second transformation where the Nyèsèk tradition is a commercialized cultural attraction. Based on the background of the problems presented, the purpose of this study is first, to analyze the factors that cause the Nyèsèk tradition to undergo cultural transformation. Second, to analyze the forms of cultural transformation in the Nyèsèk tradition. Third, to understand the implications of cultural transformation in the Nyèsèk tradition in Sade Tourism Village. This study uses qualitative research methods and data collection techniques through observation, interviews and document studies. The theories used in this study are social practice theory and social-being theory. The data analysis in this study uses inductive analysis. The results of the study show that first, the cause of the Nyèsèk tradition undergoing cultural transformation is divided into two, namely internal factors originating from the Sade community in the form of economic factors and external factors originating from the needs of tourists, namely the trend of cultural tourism which is strengthened by the role of the government in developing cultural tourism on the island of Lombok. Second, the form of cultural transformation of Nyèsèk is a transition from being private, then to domestic sector work and finally to the public sector. Third, the implications of the transformation of the Nyèsèk culture are divided into two, namely positive implications which affect the improvement of people's welfare and negative implications that obscure the essence of the tradition of the ancestral heritage of the Sasak tribe. Abstract

The Mahabharata epic is better known to people in Bali, especially in shadow puppet plays. However, since 1955, the Mahabharata epic has been presented in the form of comics. This way of storytelling continued until 2014 with the printing of the Mahabharata epic puppet comic by Gun Gun, which presents Balinese cultural icons. This research aims to describe the representation of Balinese culture in Gun Gun’s Mahabharata epic puppet comic. The research method employed a critical qualitative design. Data collection was conducted through observation, interview, and literature study. The theories utilised are comic theory, hegemony theory, representation theory, and articulation theory. The findings indicate that Gun Gun’s Mahabharata epic puppet comic employs three forms of Balinese cultural representation. The three forms are as follows: (1) visual representation, whereby characters and backgrounds are depicted in comics in a manner that evokes Balinese architecture, including wantilan, pura, and togog; (2) verbal representation, which is evidenced by the presence of Balinese vocabulary in the dialogue of the characters, such as om swastiastu, kerahayuan, yadnya, Hyang Widhi, and darma; and (3) narrative representation, which is evident in the explicit portrayal of Hindu teachings, including karma phala. The dialogue of the characters, such as om swastiastu, kerahayuan, yadnya, Hyang Widhi, and darma, and the narrative representation that shows explicitly the teachings of Hinduism, such as karma phala, are also forms of cultural representation. The study of Balinese cultural representation in the Mahabharata epic comic contributes to the understanding that comics also serve as a medium for the adaptation of external cultural influences, thereby reinforcing Balinese identity. Abstract

This article explores the significance of documenting indigenous African dances, specifically focusing on the Umxhentso dance within the cultural context of Xhosa amagqirha in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. Historically, Indigenous dances in African societies have served as crucial elements of communal ceremonies, embodying cultural traditions, spiritual beliefs, and social cohesion. However, colonialism and contemporary globalisation have threatened the preservation of these traditional dance forms. This paper employs a qualitative approach, incorporating interviews with participants and observations and extant literature and data analysis using thematic analysis. The findings underscore the multifaceted role of the Umxhentso dance, highlighting its function as a medium for connecting with ancestors, enhancing divination practices, and reinforcing spiritual potency within the community. Moreover, the article emphasises the value of documenting indigenous dances in combating stereotypes and misconceptions, preserving cultural heritage, and promoting intercultural understanding. This study contributes to the ongoing discourse on the importance of safeguarding and revitalising indigenous African dances to preserve cultural diversity and identity. Abstract

Balinese gamelan as a product and heritage of Balinese culture has been faced with a new reality, that digital technology has taken some of the spirit behind the reality of Balinese gamelan. The phenomenon of digital gamelan is not something new. But for Balinese gamelan today, it is surprising. This problem shows that there are certain efforts in the development of Balinese art. This means that this problem is also generated by the influence of modern lifestyles, namely efficiency, which is expected to overcome other problems such as the difficulty of practicing time or gathering everyone to produce a gamelan music work. Therefore, the demands of those who expect gamelan music, for example, to accompany a dance, are considered to be able to shorten work time, while the use of digital technology can cut production costs. Thus, it is difficult to say whether digital gamelan produces a work of art in the same way as gamelan itself when played by several people. However, the meaning of Balinese gamelan has certainly shifted in the digital simulation phenomenon. Keywords: Phenomena, Balinese Gamelan, Simulation, Digitization

Abstract

This study aimed to uncover patterns of structuration in communication between vegetable growers and intermediaries in the Baturiti District. This study employs a critical communication methodology. Data was gathered via interviews, observations, and document analysis approaches. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive qualitative interactive methods based on structuration theory. Phatic communication, patron-client relations, and divergent communication are forms of structuration in communication, as revealed by the research results. According to the empirical findings in this research, communication actions are shown to improve relationships, resulting in a tendency towards greater intimacy. The result is that the relationship pattern of vegetable farmers has been tied to economic actors, namely middlemen, for a very long time. The theoretical finding in this research is that structuration in communication is in line with the concept of symbolic interactionism, which focuses on efforts to provide interactions using symbols and containing power to weak parties. This research contributes to policy making related to the use of agricultural products. Keywords: communication structuration, vegetable farmers, middlemen

Abstract

This research explores the transformation of the practice of giving "Lin Welin Leto Woter" in Krowe ethnic marriages in Sikka Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, examining the influence of ideological, social, and material factors. Using qualitative methodology, data were collected through observation, interviews, and document analysis. The results reveal ideological shifts driven by modernity and globalization, social tensions triggered by manipulation within the community, and economic impacts driving adaptation. Despite facing challenges, the Krowe community demonstrates resilience by incorporating personal symbols and adjusting practices. Traditional terms persist alongside new practices, reflecting cultural continuity. From a theoretical perspective, these practices reflect the flexibility of cultural symbols, inviting further investigation. In conclusion, the Krowe community's response reaffirms their ability to navigate change while preserving cultural identity, suggesting avenues for further research and recommendations to support cultural preservation.
