Abstract

It has been argued that technology can improve learners’ motivation. Furthermore, technology integration has been regarded one of motivational strategies or techniques to improve learners’ positive attitudes. In this regard, one of motivational strategies that can be given to learners is incorporating CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) to EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classrooms. Therefore, the present research analysed the effects of CALL on a group of Indonesian EFL learners’ motivation. In order to obtain the results, the present research conducted a quasi-experimental study toward 40 college students. In addition, a set of questionnaires adapted from Taguchi, Magid, & Papi (2009) as well as semi-structured interviews were used as research instruments. In addition, English tests will be given to the respondents to see the effects of CALL on the improvement of learners’ achievements. The results of present study suggest the positive effects of CALL on learners’ motivation. In addition, learners’ achievement also improved after being intervened with CALL. Nevertheless, the use of CALL needs to be supported by teachers who are capable enough to provide suitable materials that suit learners’ need. Thus, it seems important for teachers to be provided with prior sufficient training on how to use CALL effectively.

Abstract

Teaching materials play a very important role in the learning process. A good teaching material is a collection of material contents that can facilitate teacher and students in completing the learning steps and can achieve the learning objectives appropriately. However, not all teachers provide teaching materials in accordance with the courses being taught and this makes it difficult for students to equate the perception of the material from the level of depth and the scope of the material to be learnt. This is the background of researcher to conduct this research. The purpose of this study is to develop teaching materials for writing skills in English Language Studies Media Studies for Communication Studies Students Based on Genre Based Approach. The research method being used is Research and Development (R&D). The samples are students from English of Media Studies. The result of this study produced an English writing material consisting of six topics developed by adopting Genre Based Approach in learning situation.  It is hoped that teachers can use and promote this approach in teaching students writing to get maximum writing results.Key words: Teaching materials, writing skills, Genre Based Approach

This study used qualitative approach and the data were collected through questionnaire, interview, and observation. The participants were four English teachers in senior high school that have teaching experiences more than 10 years. The result showed that teachers’ affective states in EFL reading were high and triggered by external motivation. Regarding the feelings in EFL reading, the teachers have more positive feelings depending on text difficulties. Furthermore, the teachers showed high volition, attribution and self-efficacy in EFL reading because of internet era that allow them to access many reading sources and exercises. The analysis revealed that the teachers were more confident in this present time compared to their past experiences in EFL reading. The higher affective states could be beneficial for the teachers to overcome their reading problem and to train the teachers’ responsibility toward their own reading experience.

Abstract

Subject-verb agreement is relevant in determining one's grammatical ability. The study examines the 70 English major students of UNTIRTA through a questionnaire. They are in semester four or second-year students of the academic year 2019-2020. A percentage result per item has been the indicator of students' knowledge on the five categories namely; the basics, impersonal subjects, quantities, exceptions, and main and auxiliary verbs. The verification of the incorrect response is through the short-written production of students' composition. Not only nouns that used as subjects but also other parts of speech and unit blocks of syntax.  It reveals that a lot of students commit mistakes in choosing the right verb that agrees to the subject. This finding implies interference of first language and second language as parcel in mastering the subject-verb agreement which results to struggle and confusion among the learners. Lack of emphasis on grammar practice in writing is also a reason in applying the rules especially the basics. Moreover, cultural difference is a barrier in interpreting the sentences wherein the learners’ vocabulary is limited. Suggested instructional strategy is a regular practice of the rules in the form of drill.

Abstract

This research analyzed research backgrounds, namely research territory (claim centrality, problems, a review literature) and research niche (gaps) of EFL students' research proposals. The research design was qualitative research employing text analysis. The researchers used a random sampling technique to select two research proposals' backgrounds. Moreover, the contents of the research proposals' backgrounds analyzed using the CARS model  (Swales & Feak, 2012). The research findings showed that the students tend to find it difficult in addressing the research territory (problems) and establishing a niche (gap). First, the students apparently find it difficult to develop their ideas as a result of the students apparently find it difficult to establish a niche (gaps). Second, the students tend to find it difficult to compose their ideas started from the general views to the specific thoughts. Last, the students lack consistency in using tenses.

Abstract

This paper aims to answer two research questions: (1) What design of an Extensive Reading program can be developed in the EFL setting with time constraints and (2) How do students respond to the design implementation. To achieve these goals, the study used Design-Based Research and, in the practice, it was carried out in 3 major phases. The initial phase was the analysis of practical problems. The second phase was literature research to inform the planning and development of the prototype design and the last phase was the implementation and reflection of the implementation of the design. The study was carried out in one semester in an English Education Department of a university in Indonesia. The study results in an alternative design to an ER+ program that is called Transdicto. Transdicto is conducted in five major steps: (1) extensive reading/ listening, (2) note-taking, (3) exploring, (4) contextualizing, and (5) transforming. Observation and interview revealed that the students responded well to Transdicto; they found the steps of the activity were relatively easy to follow, useful, and engaging

Abstract

In 2019, a rape case involving two students of UGM went viral. After being headlines in many news articles, the case was settled in February, and one of the newspapers which cover this news is The Jakarta Post who released an article entitled ‘UGM settles alleged sexual abuse case’. Through systemic functional grammar, this study attempts at analyzing the transitivity processes and participants in the article, and it aims at describing how it signifies the power relation and representation in the article. This is a qualitative study which applied critical discourse analysis, and the data used are sentences and clauses taken from the news article. To analyze the data, the researcher applied Halliday’s transitivity theory and Fairclough’s theory on power and representation. The results of the study reveal that there is an unequal representation in the article where it gives more opportunities for UGM to deliver their statement and argument since UGM holds more power than the other participants.

Abstract

One of the prevalence of digital technology in academic writing, particularly in literature reviews, is the use of paraphrasing tools. However, there is a lack of research focusing on overcoming students' paraphrasing difficulties in writing.Using the notion of Schuemann, C., Byrd, P., & Reid. (2006), this paper explores students’ difficulties with paraphrasing and the use of online paraphrasing tools. A descriptive qualitative approach was used to collect data from 30 students enrolled in the Magister's of English Language Education (MELE) study program. Students' responses to two types of questionnaires were used as data sources. The study found that 83percent of the paraphrasing tools were used to rewrite the source text. Then, the most difficulties in terms of content, structure, language, and paraphrase strategy are paraphrasing itself, using correct grammar and appropriate vocabulary, and redundant/un-variative words. Furthermore, online paraphrasing tools mainly assist students in using the appropriate parts of speech (3.88) and in selecting appropriate vocabulary (3.79). It can then rewrite the source text using the same idea but a different writing style (3.75), correct grammar (3.67), the appropriate synonym to paraphrase (3.67), and changing the active sentence to the passive voice and vice versa (3.54). It can also change the source text's sentence structure (3.46), use proper tenses in literature reviews (3.38), and use proper discourse markers (3.33). Finally, students of the MELE study program can change the source text. Despite the numerous advantages of online paraphrasing tools, students are unable to read or comprehend text, which is the first step in the paraphrasing process.
