Abstract

Aim: This study aims to evaluate the effects of effleurage massage with olive oil on the severity of pressure ulcers in bedridden patients at a private hospital in Yogyakarta. Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group approach. A total of 30 participants were selected using accidental sampling and divided into two groups: the intervention group (n = 15), which received effleurage massage with olive oil twice daily for three days, and the control group (n = 15), which did not receive the intervention. The degree of pressure ulcers was assessed through clinical observation based on the pressure ulcer staging classification (Braden Score). Data analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test to analyze changes in the degree of pressure ulcers before and after the intervention in each group, while differences in the degree of pressure ulcers between groups after the intervention were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U test. Results: Most respondents were aged ≥60 years (90%), male (66.7%), and had a Braden score in the very high-risk category (76.7%). In the intervention group, 86.7% of respondents did not develop pressure ulcers and 13.3% developed Stage I pressure ulcers, whereas in the control group, 73.3% did not develop pressure ulcers, 20.0% developed Stage I pressure ulcers, and 6.7% developed Stage II pressure ulcers. The results of the Wilcoxon test showed no significant change in pressure ulcer stage in either the intervention group (p=1.000) or the control group (p=0.157). The results of the Mann–Whitney test showed no difference in post-test pressure ulcer stage between the intervention and control groups (p=0.512). Conclusion: The administration of effleurage massage using olive oil did not have a significant effect on the severity of pressure ulcers in bedridden patients at a private hospital in Yogyakarta. Future studies are recommended to use a larger sample size, a longer intervention duration and observation period, and a study design that allows for the evaluation of changes in condition before and after the intervention.

Abstract

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the slow deep breathing technique on pain scores in post-surgical patients. Methods: The study used a quasi-experimental design with a pretest and posttest approach, with a control group. A sample size of 48 respondents, consisting of 24 in the intervention group and 24 in the control group, was selected using accidental sampling according to inclusion criteria. Pain intensity was measured using a visual analog scale before and after the intervention. The intervention group was given the slow deep breathing technique once for ten minutes, while the control group received no special treatment. Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test to determine differences in pain scores between the two groups. Results: Based on the study results, the intervention group experienced a decrease in the average pain score after administering the Slow Deep Breathing (SDB) technique compared to before the intervention (p = 0.000). Similarly, the control group saw a decrease in the average pain score between the pre- and post-observation measurements (p = 0.004), although the magnitude of the decrease was smaller than that of the intervention group. Conclusion: This study concluded that there was no significant difference in post-surgical pain reduction between the intervention group receiving the slow deep breathing technique and the control group. The slow deep breathing technique can still be considered a supportive non-pharmacological intervention in pain management. Future research is recommended to optimize the frequency and duration of interventions and consider environmental factors and surgical characteristics that may influence patient pain perception.

Abstract

Aim: Pressure ulcers are one of the serious complications of bedrest patients that can cause tissue damage, increase length of stay (LOS), and worsen the overall condition of patients if optimal prevention is not carried out. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of effleurage massage using VCO and proper positioning on the pressure ulcer risk score of bedrest patients in Inpatient Room of Hospital in Yogyakarta. Method: This study employed a quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test on two groups, involving 30 respondents, with 15 respondents in the intervention group and 15 respondents in the control group. The intervention group received effleurage massage using VCO and proper positioning, while the control group only received proper positioning intervention. The instrument used was the Norton Scale, which was administered on the first day (pre-test) and the third day (post-test). The Paired t-test was used to determine the Norton scores in the intervention and control groups, while the independent t-test was used to determine the difference in Norton scores between the two groups.   Result: The results showed a significant decrease in pressure ulcer risk scores in the intervention group after two days of intervention, from 12.67 to 14.80 (p value 0.000). Meanwhile, the control group experienced a decrease in scores, but not as significant as in the intervention group, from 13.13 to 13.80 (p value 0.004), indicating that the combination intervention was more effective in reducing pressure ulcers. Conclusion: With a significant difference in Norton post-test scores between the two groups, and a greater increase in Norton scores in the intervention group, this shows that the combined intervention was more effective than just one intervention alone.

Abstract

Aim:  Phubbing" and "smombie" behaviors are consequences of the inability to use technology wisely—specifically, the excessive use of smartphones. Self-control is a crucial aspect to consider regarding phubbing and smombie behaviors; poor self-control often manifests most visibly during social interactions. This study aims to analyze the relationship between self-control and phubbing/smombie behaviors among adolescents at MTsN 1 Kediri. Methods: This is a quantitative study employing a correlational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach, involving a sample of 236 7th and 8th-grade students at MTsN 1 Kediri. Purposive sampling was used as the sampling technique. The Self-Control Scale (SCS) was used to measure self-control, while the Phubbing & Smombie Scale (PS) was used to measure phubbing and smombie behaviors. Data were analyzed using Spearman’s non-parametric correlation test. Results: The study yielded a correlation coefficient (r) of -0.238 with a significance value (p) of 0.278. Since p > 0.05, the null hypothesis (H0) was accepted. This indicates no statistically significant relationship between adolescent self-control and phubbing/smombie behaviors among students at MTsN 1 Kediri. The results reveal a research gap compared to previous studies; while earlier literature suggests a link between self-control and phubbing/smombie behaviors, this study found no significant relationship. The findings suggest that the behavior is driven not by weak self-control, but by factors such as the need for group conformity (fear of appearing unsupportive if one does not check their phone during gatherings) and the requirements of group tasks that necessitate intensive phone use. Conclusion: There is no relationship between self-control and phubbing/smombie behaviors among adolescents at MTsN 1 Kediri.

Abstract

Aim: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a chronic complication of diabetes mellitus that carries a risk of infection, amputation, and increased mortality. Selecting the right wound cleansing solution plays a crucial role in supporting the wound healing process, but evidence regarding the effectiveness of Electrolyzed Strong Water Acid (ESWA) in DFU patients is limited. This study aimed to analyze the effect of wound cleansing using ESWA on DFU healing compared to normal saline. Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental, post-test-only control group design and was conducted at Rumah Luka Surabaya from April 29 to May 29, 2019. A total of 100 respondents were selected using simple random sampling and divided into a treatment group receiving ESWA wound cleansing (n=50) and a control group receiving normal saline (n=50). Wound healing was evaluated using the Bates-Jensen Wound Assessment Tool (BWAT) every three days for one month. Data analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney test. Results: The mean BWAT score in the treatment group was lower than in the control group (20.25 vs. 25.18), with a mean decrease of 16.75 and 11.07, respectively. Both groups were in the wound regeneration category. The Mann-Whitney test showed no significant difference between the two groups (p=0.078). Conclusion: Wound cleansing using ESWA did not have a statistically significant effect on DFU healing compared to normal saline. However, the group receiving ESWA showed a trend toward better clinical improvement, suggesting ESWA has the potential to be used as an antibacterial and relatively economical alternative for wound cleansing in DFU patients.

Abstract

Aim: The Chronic Disease Management Program (Prolanis) is a strategic initiative of BPJS Kesehatan aimed at improving the quality of life of patients with chronic diseases through integrated services at primary healthcare facilities. The success of this program is influenced by the availability of nursing human resources, the implementation of program activities, and participant involvement. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the availability of nursing human resources and the implementation of activities with the participation of Prolanis participants in Public Health Centers (Puskesmas) in Banjarmasin City. Method: This study employed a quantitative analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The population consisted of 27 Public Health Centers in Banjarmasin City implementing the Prolanis program, with total sampling used as the sampling technique. Data were collected using observation checklists and documentation. Data analysis was conducted through univariate and bivariate analyses using Fisher’s Exact Test with a significance level of α = 0.05. Result: The results showed that most Public Health Centers had adequate nursing human resources (88.9%), and the implementation of Prolanis activities was categorized as achieved (85.2%). However, participant involvement in the Prolanis program was predominantly inactive (66.7%). Bivariate analysis indicated no significant relationship between the availability of nursing human resources and participant involvement (p = 0.529), nor between the implementation of activities and participant involvement in the Prolanis program (p = 0.268). Conclusion: The findings suggest that participant involvement in the Prolanis program is not solely influenced by the availability of nursing human resources and the implementation of activities, but also by other factors such as motivation, perceived benefits, and family and environmental support.

Abstract

Aim: The final stage of nursing education represents one of the most psychologically challenging periods for students, as they must navigate demanding academic responsibilities while confronting the uncertainties of transitioning into professional life as future nurses. These compounding pressures create a conducive environment for the emergence of both academic burnout and quarter life crisis among nursing students. This study aimed to examine the relationship between academic burnout and quarter life crisis among final-year nursing students. Method: This study employed a quantitative approach with a correlational analytic design and cross-sectional method. The population consisted of final-year nursing students. A total of 84 final-year nursing students were recruited using a total sampling technique. The instruments used were the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey (MBI-SS) adapted into Indonesian to measure academic burnout, and the Quarter Life Crisis questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using the Spearman Rank correlation test with a significance level of α = 0.05. Result: Nearly half of the respondents experienced moderate academic burnout (48.8%), while more than half of the respondents experienced quarter life crisis at a high level (52.4%). The Spearman Rank correlation analysis demonstrated a significant positive association between academic burnout and quarter-life crisis (p = 0.000; r = 0.504), indicating that higher levels of academic burnout were associated with higher levels of quarter-life crisis, with a moderate correlation strength. Conclusion: A significant positive correlation was found between academic burnout and quarter life crisis among final-year nursing students, indicating that the higher the academic burnout experienced by students, the higher the quarter life crisis they feel.
