Abstract

Aspects of students' skills in speaking at the primary level is still lacking. In the English curriculum, students should be able to communicate verbally with correct speech. In learning Introduction material, students are expected to be able to communicate verbally with the direct method. With the use of the English language continually practiced in the classroom, students can improve their English properly. When the teacher guidance students through the direct method directly, their speaking skills improved successfully. This is shown in an increase in the ability to speak in five aspects of evaluation speech (grammar, vocabulary, fluency, pronunciation, and comprehension) in students from pre-test until the second cycle. At pra-treatment, students do not understand the use of the phrase, a good structure in self introduction. Any questions in English concerning the introduction of the personal data has not been understood by the students. In the first cycle, it has shown an increased understanding of the data, especially in answering the question in the introduction. In the second cycle, it has been improved with the ability to speak well, except for students who did not absorb the lessons (there are two students).

Abstract

Abstract Generally, this article aims at familiarizing to teachers who teaching English about essential roles of English literature in language classroom practices. While some teachers may still believe that teaching literature in EFL context encompasses focusing on linguistics competence only. Others who have integrated literature in the curricula have realized that literature has more dimensions other than linguistics that it may have. The main purpose of this article is to introduce several models of literature teaching models and to describe how those teaching models contribute to the language teaching for practical purposes. The reawakening of interest in literature will bring educational or pedagogical in EFL context. In the context of language teaching, literature contributes to three main aspects; linguistic competence; cultural competence; and personal growth. These three main points would be the models for teaching language that would elaborated further on this article. In term of Linguistic model, the teaching is directed to the acquisition of language since the language is the main medium of literature. In addition, linguistic acquisition is believed to be able to bring the students to understand literary works. For cultural model, the teaching focuses on cross cultural understanding; while in the personal growth model, students are expected to combine the two competencies that the two previous models expected to have. At the end, this article is expected to provide suggestions and pedagogical implication of literature teaching practices to teachers who have the relevant field of interest.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to determine the language maintenance occurring in the family domain in Belantih village, Kintamani, Bali. The analysis was limited to the language maintenance in the family domain in the form of speech and lexicons contained in Belantih Village. The data were elaborated on the analysis and presented qualitatively in the form of speech and vocabulary using the theories of the domains of language usage that proposed by Fishman (1968), the theory of language maintenance and language shifting proposed by Fishman (1972) and to determine the factors that cause the language maintenance that analyzed based on the theory strategy of language maintenance proposed by Holmes (1992). The result of the study showed that family domain is the smallest in the domains of social life, and the domain becomes an important indicator of language maintenance. BBA in the family domain in the Belantih village still usage until this time at the level of phonological which there is phoneme /a/ in the middle or at the end of the lexicon, and based on the lexical level, there are several lexicons which is the original lexicon of Belantih village. In maintenance the minority language in the middle of majority language takes some strategies such as phonological and lexical factors, the pattern of language use, demographic factors, and attitudes to the minority language, so in this case the society should have a positive attitude and a sense of belonging to the mother tongue or language minorities. This research is expected to contribute to further research related to the maintenance language as a mother tongue and not only in the domain of family but all of the domains in the society.

Abstract

Bahasa Inggris di Indonesia berstatus sebagai bahasa asing, di dalam proses untuk memperoleh bahasa tersebut atau yang biasa disebut dengan language acquisition, pemelajar atau mahasiswa banyak yang mengalami kendala untuk mengaplikasikan penggunaan bahasa Inggris tulis ke dalam bentuk yang benar. Penelitian ini berusaha untuk mengabstraksikan jenis-jenis interferensi yang terdapat susunan kalimat tanya dalam bahasa Inggris dan faktor-faktor yang memengaruhi interferensi struktur WH-Questions tersebut pada karangan dialog mahasiswa. Penelitian tentang interferensi pengaruh bahasa Indonesia dalam bahasa Inggris secara umum telah banyak dilakukan oleh peneliti terdahulu, tetapi penelitian yang secara khusus membahas tentang jenis interferensi dan faktor yang memengaruhi interferensi sejauh yang penulis baca belum ditemukan. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah dapat menjelaskan struktur WH-Questions bahasa Inggris yang mengalami interferensi dari bahasa Indonesia dan untuk menjelaskan penyebab terjadinya interferensi penggunaan struktur WH-Questions bahasa Inggris. Teori yang digunakan adalah teori analisis kesalahan oleh Richards (1975). Penelitian ini dirancang dengan metode deskriptif kualitatif, data dikumpulkan dengan metode simak dan teknik catat. Analisis data dilakukan dengan metode agih dan sebagian dengan metode padan. Teknik analisis data yang diterapkan dalam penelitian ini adalah teknik balik dan ubah ujud. Hasil analisis data disajikan dengan metode informal. Sesuai dengan rumusan masalah, tujuan, dan analisis data, hasil penelitian ini  menunjukkan: pertama, berdasarkan jenis-jenis interferensi WH-Questions yang dapat diklasifikasikan menjadi empat jenis interferensi, yaitu (1) addition, (2) omission, (3) substitution, dan (4) reordering. Kedua, terdapat tiga jenis interferensi dasar yang dapat dikombinasikan dengan tiga jenis interferensi lainnya sesuai dengan permasalahan yang ada dalam interferensi yang bersangkutan, yaitu (1) addition dan omission, (2) addition dan substitution, dan (3) omission dan substitution. Selain itu, ditemukan juga faktor yang memengaruhi interferensi. Faktor yang memengaruhi interferensi meliputi: faktor eksternal bahasa dan faktor internal bahasa. (1) faktor eksternal bahasa yaitu (a) attitude; (b) motivasi; (2) faktor internal bahasa yaitu (a) direct translation; (b) overgeneralization.

Abstract

Abstract An analysis on the speech acts used by TGK. Hamzanwadi as a communicative strategy to influence his viewers to do something, showed that the highest percentage is on the use of directive which was due to the characteristic of a sermon as a religious genre which is mostly indoctrination in nature. The purpose of the directives were: to ask, to prohibit, to order, to instruct, and to support which represent the power in TGK. Hamzanwadi?s dakwah.. Kata-kata kunci: Tindak tutur, direktif, kekuasaan, dakwah.

Abstract

Writing system is used to represent or denote something with something else. This study was aimed at kanji in the Japanese language as a form of writing system, in addition to hiragana and katakana. This study was descriptive qualitative. The object of this study is kanji made by the Japanese language learners in Bunutan, Kedewatan. In order to minimize the difficulties in writing kanji, the learners need to understand the meaning of its constituent elements named the origin of the formation, parts of kanji (bushu??) and their meanings. The theory of sign proposed by Pierce was used in analyzing the data. Some aspects were analyzed including icon, index, and symbol in the scratch of kanji made by the learners. The result of this study shows that the Japanese language learners faced some difficulties in writing kanji. The difficulties were found when the learners tried to remember the way to start and write the correct scratch of kanji.

Abstract

Abstract The domination of vowel sounds a, i, and u within the naratif lyrics of Geguritan Sucita seem to represent that the rhyme is euphonious and match with the characteristic of padalingsa: expresive-religious. The religious aura of the lyrics becomes stronger because of the improvement of consonant ng. Concerning the theological aspect of Hindu, if the vowel a, i, and u are followed by the consonant ng (letter of hamsa), they will become the symbol of the three manifestations of God. The first is Ang, which is the holy letter of Brahma. Then, Ing is the holy letter of Isana (Úiwa or Iúwara), and finally, Ung is the holy letter of Wisnu. Therefore, the rhyme of the GS lyrics can be regarded having euphonious-religious character, and moreover, GS is composed to voice and or to sing about religiosity.

Abstract

Jurnal ini membahas mengenai karakteristik dan bentuk ujaran bahasa Jepang orang Osaka tinjauan linguistik kebudayaan. Data dikumpulkan melalui interview langsung. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan teori linguistik kebudayaan menurut Foley (1991), Palmer (1996), dan Riana (2003). Dari data yang ditemukan, karakteristik dan bentuk ujaran bahasa Jepang orang Osaka ditunjukkan dengan kenyamanan berbahasa dengan menggunakan leksikon ‘akan’, bentuk hormat bahasa Jepang orang Osaka dengan leksikon (~haru), bentuk sopan bahasa Jepang orang Osaka dengan leksikon ‘sai de gozaimasu, sou de omasu, sou dasu, sai de gowasu dan sai de goasu’, bentuk keakraban berbahasa dengan bentuk ‘dou dekka, moukatte makka’, dan bahasa Jepang Osaka kasar ‘ahou’ Kata kunci: karakteristik, bentuk hormat, bentuk sopan, keakraban berbahasa dan bahasa kasar.

Abstract

English achievement of the students of Faculty of Letters Ahmad Dahlan University Yogyakarta is low. The indicator is the English ability of the students, because English has an important role as an International language in the world. Besides the result of learning RAP of the students shows in average scores of 56-65 (C). The problems which are discussed in this research are: 1) the effort of how to improve the achievement of RAP by using TBL and 2) the evidence that shows as the English achievement of the students in studying RAP. TBL, which is used in the treatment is done into 3 cycles: the first cycle has been done by 4 meetings, the second cycle has been done by 4 meetings, and the third cycle has been done by 4 meetings. All the teaching–learning process of RAP is done by collaboration and creativity in preparing materials. It is a result of CAR which is done in Reading Class A Faculty of Letters UAD Yogyakarta from June up to December 2008. There are planning, preventative steps of performance, observation, and reflection. The data are taken from the real condition that the result of learning process of RAP of the students is low. To get the data the researcher does an observation, an interview, besides asking the students to fulfilling the form, giving test, and analyzing document. Data validity investigation technique which is used in this research is Data Resource Triangulation and Method Triangulation. Informant Review is also used in Data Validity Test. Reliability Estimation to guarantee the reliability of Data are found by Test and Observation. To analyze the data the researcher uses the result of observation that is reflected and the learning result of the students that is achievement. The technique of analyzing the data is Descriptive Statistic Technique and Critical Analysis to know the improvement of the situation in detail and precisely according to the improving of the treatment in each cycle that is the improvement of the 1st, the 2nd, and the 3rd cycles. After having the preventative steps of performance by using TBL in RAP which have been done in the first, in the second, and in the third cycles, there is a significant result. It shows that more than 75% of the students who have got good grade with more than 65 scores. There are 20 of 27 students get good scores: 10 students (37,04%) get the score between 66-79 (B); and 12 students (44,44%) get the score between 80-88 (A), and 5 students (18,52%) get C (56-65). It means that there is a significant improvement of English achievement by using TBL in teaching RAP. The Affective Aspect and the Psychomotor Aspect are also significantly increased, because according to the result of Paired Sample Test, the correlation significant shows below 0,05 (

Abstract

Speech act is language use which considered as the system of communication in speech done by people on certain situations. Speech act can be stated as the essence of language use related to physical component and psychological language self. It is a deliberacy to make interpretations on what would like to say, for instance speech wedding ceremony done by Madurese at Kalidandan village, Pakuniran district, Probolinggo regency had some phases, those are phase of engagement, pre-wedding, marriage, and post wedding. This research used qualitative descriptive approach with listening method (observation method). The theory used in this research is theory pragmatics. The analysis results stated that illocutionary act at speech act of madurese wedding ceremony at Kalidandan, Pakuniran, Probolinggo are concluded (1) asking, (2) do not play around in marriage, (3) grateful, (4) regret, (5) willingly, (6) patient, (7) time of scarcity before harvesting, and (8) pregnant under married. Meanwhile, it found part of speech act (1) direct speech act, (2) indirect speech act, (3) literal speech act, (4) nonliteral speech act, (5) direct literal speech act, (6) indirect speech act, (7) direct nonliteral speech act, and (8) indirect nonliteral speech act.
