Abstract

In Indonesia, da’wah activities have been implemented in various ways, including mountaineering. However, data showed that many mountain hikers in Indonesia had been seriously injured (even died) due to a lack of knowledge and preparation for hiking. This article aimed to analyze the goals of mountain hiking and fulfilling the reproductive health conducted by Pendaki Hijabers community members. The authors used a phenomenological approach with a descriptive-analytical type of qualitative research. The research was conducted at Mount Merapi and Prau Dieng, Indonesia, from 2019 until 2020 with 25 informants. The data were analyzed using Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and Maqāşid al-Syarī'ah theory. The results showed that the goals of Pendaki Hijabers community activities varied, such as meditation on nature, exploration of nature verses ‘āyāt kauniyah’, da’wah through mountaineering, deepening mountaineering skills, eliminating negative stereotypes of hijab, ideological deconstruction of society through the hijab, and fighting developmentalism through social service, sport, education, and religious activities. Based on the CEDAW review, mountaineering for women, on the one hand, had a positive impact on psychology because it can eliminate double burden concepts and negative stereotypes for women. On the other hand, mountain hiking has a potential negative impact on women's reproductive health because luggage is too heavy, hiking during menstruation, and consumption of food and drinks that are not ideal. Based on the Maqāşid al-Syarī'ah review, mountaineering activities supported ḥifẓ dīn ‘safeguarding the religion’ because they are oriented towards the da’wah of Islam. But, mountaineering that does not pay attention to aspects of reproductive health potentially harms the goals of sharia in the form of ḥifẓ nafs ‘safeguarding the soul’ and ḥifẓ nasal ‘safeguarding offspring’.

Abstract

While consolidating democracy in Muslim-majority countries like many Arab countries today, the problem of opposition between the people and the rulers still leaves a latent conflict. The opposition is not new in the Islamic world. In this context, the Ḥanābilah oppositional movement against the al-Ma'mūn's miḥna policy finds its significance here. The article aimed to determine the genealogy of the Ḥanābilah opposition to the al-Ma'mūn's miḥna policy and to correct the Weberian perspective in reading socio-religious movements, mainly the movement carried out by the Ḥanābilah ulema community by offering a socio-convergent perspective. This article is more a religious research than research on religion. The data in this study were sourced from books written by Ibn Ḥanbal and other relevant books. Data were analyzed using data display, data verification, and conclusions techniques. The results show that Ibn Ḥanbal's opposition to the miḥna is motivated by maintaining theological orthodoxy and protecting the authority of the Sunni ulema. Ḥanābilah's oppositional actions are more related to the conflict of authority. This convergence thesis is in line with the blurred approach of Edmund Burke and Adonis or the double-edged sword theory of Alberto Melluci. Opposition as part of efforts to construct a civilized political system which is not only seen from an opposing side but also as a sparring partner in carrying out the function of amr ma'rūf nahy munkar 'commanding right and forbidding wrong' to the government to realize good governance.

Abstract

Sumenep Batik has characteristics such as asymmetrical motifs and colors that reflect natural representations. Generally, figures of plants, animals, and acculturation inspire the creation of batik motifs. However, the inspiration for the motifs of the Sumenep Batik is strongly influenced by the acculturation between religious values and local culture. The pattern of motifs is considered a form of cultural communication with Sumenep Batik as the medium. This article aimed to discover the meaning of the motifs from the perspective of religion and local culture acculturation because studies on the motifs of Sumenep Batik still need to be made available. Economic and human resource aspects dominate Sumenep Batik's research. The method used is descriptive qualitative, collecting data through observation, literature review, and interviews with Madurese Batik artisans, entrepreneurs, and cultural observers. The summary of the information is then analyzed using Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic theory. The result is that there has been a process of cultural acculturation -starting from the 13th century- as evidenced by the existence of five elements of cultural acculturation in the pattern of Sumenep Batik motifs. Starting from the influence of the Hindu-Buddhist kingdom, then the Islamic sultanate, the influence of Chinese culture, then the influence of coastal culture, and finally, the influence of religious elements that influence the motifs of Sumenep Batik. Based on the semiotic analysis, the pattern of batik motifs originating from plant parts influences the implementation of Islamic religiosity elements. In Islamic rules, it is forbidden to depict creatures that have souls. Besides that, the combination of plants and orange color also describes the warmth and happiness expected to always exist in the people of Sumenep Madura.

Abstract

Pancasila is the foundation of Indonesia's national ideology, which promotes unity in diversity and harmonious relations between different religions and cultures. This article aimed to explore the development of nationalism-religious character through the project to strengthen Pancasila student and Rahmatan lil Alamin profiles. This research utilizes a literature review approach to examine the existing literature on the role of religion in developing national identity and character, as well as the importance of Pancasila in Indonesian society. The research also analyzes the current state of education in Indonesia, with a focus on the potential of the education system to promote nationalism-religious character development. The research findings suggest that integrating religious and nationalism values into the education system can help promote nationalism-religious character development among students. The project to strengthen Pancasila and Rahmatan lil Alamin student profiles in Indonesia can contribute to this effort by instilling in students a sense of responsibility towards their country and their fellow citizens. In conclusion, developing nationalism-religious character through the project to strengthen Pancasila and Rahmatan lil Alamin student profiles in Indonesian Islamic educational institutions is crucial for promoting national identity, peace, and countering radicalism. By integrating Pancasila values and fostering religious tolerance, these institutions can shape students into responsible citizens who uphold national values and contribute to the harmonious development of society. Challenges such as curriculum integration, teacher training, and community engagement must be addressed to ensure the successful implementation of this project. Further research is recommended to assess this initiative's long-term effects and sustainability in achieving its intended outcomes.

Abstract

Female circumcision remains a social issue in Muslim society, along with the rise of gender-based violence cases in Indonesia. It has became rather a polemic after regional policy on that matter was issued inconsistently. This study aimed to determine the polemic of female circumcision in Garut Regency based on cultural and regional policy analysis. The study utilized qualitative method with an ethnographic approach. The data taken were based on primary data and secondary data. Data collection techniques used were interviews and literature that supports the research. The results obtained in this study are that the polemic about female circumcision occurs because of differences in views based on fatwa so that society constructs female circumcision subjectively. Differences in the belief in the concept of female circumcision, which has become a culture in society, and the different techniques or processes for implementing female circumcision have resulted in the development of perceptions of female circumcision. The inconsistency of the policies of the Minister of Health Regulations makes the community have a bias towards pros and cons by the paradigm of religious leaders, parents, gender activists, and health workers.

Abstract

The relativism problem –allegedly has become a frightening specter for a stable religious and social existence. Relativism which believes there is no absolute truth; the truth is relative, raises a problem by denying the existence of God's truth and declaring that human is the measure of all things. Even though human statements, when viewed from this review, also become very relatively charged. Therefore, an in-depth study of relativism and its implication for Islam must be investigated. This paper tried to provide a solution problem of relativism by using the worldview theory from Al-Attas, which can guide humans to know the direction and purpose of their behavior in viewing actual reality. The authors used a qualitative research method, collected data on the issues raised from various reading sources such as books and journals, and analyzed data using Al-Attas' theory. Critical analysis methods supported by solid historical reviews found that this understanding of relativism triggered other notions that deconstructed the truth claims of Islam as a complete religion and messed up fixed Sharia law 'śawābit'. Relativism is the root cause of multi-dimensional problems, especially religion and social issues. Therefore, the existence of an ideal moral measure that is universal is necessary and manifest.
