Abstract

Dental plaque accumulation is a common oral health problem among pregnant women and is associated with anincreased risk of gingivitis, periodontitis, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. In Bunder Village, Pamekasan, preliminaryobservations showed a high plaque index among pregnant women, highlighting the need for accessible and safe plaque-controlinterventions. Natural mouthwash derived from herbal plants such as betel (Piper betle) and basil (Ocimum basilicum) leaves hasbeen suggested to possess antibacterial and antiplaque properties, yet comparative evidence in pregnant populations remainslimited. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of betel leaf and basil leaf decoctions in reducing dental plaque index amongpregnant women. This quasi-experimental study involved 32 pregnant women selected using Slovin’s formula and randomlyassigned into two equal groups. Each group rinsed with either a boiled betel leaf or basil leaf solution prepared using standardizedprocedures. Plaque index was measured before and after rinsing using the Patient Hygiene Performance (PHP) Index. Datanormality was assessed using the Shapiro–Wilk test, while within-group and between-group differences were analyzed using pairedand independent t-tests, respectively. Both betel and basil leaf decoctions significantly reduced plaque index (p < 0.05). The betel leaf group showed a greater mean reduction (Δ = 1.23 ± 0.75) compared to the basil leaf group (Δ = 0.85 ± 0.65), with the between-group comparison indicating a significant difference favoring betel leaf (p = 0.003). In conclusion, both herbal decoctions effectively lowered plaque index among pregnant women; however, betel leaf decoction demonstrated superior antiplaque efficacy. These findings support the potential use of betel leaf decoction as a low-cost, safe, and natural alternative mouthwash in prenataloral health programs. Further studies with longer follow-up and standardized phytochemical assessment are recommended.

Abstract

Children with intellectual disabilities often experience substantial challenges in understanding and performing effective oral hygiene practices, which contributes to a disproportionately high prevalence of dental caries and unmet dental treatment needs. Limited cognitive abilities, reduced motor skills, and low health literacy further hinder their ability to maintain proper oral hygiene. Addressing these gaps requires educational approaches that are accessible, engaging, and tailored to their learning characteristics. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Dental Joyful Learning video a short animated educational intervention on improving oral health knowledge among students with intellectual disabilities at SLB Paedagogia Surabaya. A quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach was employed involving 20 students who met the inclusion criteria. Participants completed a structured Guttman-scale questionnaire before and after a single 3-minute video intervention. Data were analyzed descriptively and statistically using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test to determine changes in knowledge. The findings demonstrated a marked improvement in oral health knowledge following the intervention. Prior to the video exposure, 75% of participants fell within the poor knowledge category, with an average score of 34%. After the intervention, 80% of participants reached the good category, with the mean score rising significantly to 83%. The Wilcoxon test yielded a p-value of 0.000 (<0.05), confirming a statistically significant increase in knowledge. In conclusion, the Dental Joyful Learning video proved effective in enhancing oral health knowledge among children with intellectual disabilities. The use of concise, visually engaging, and cognitively appropriate audiovisual media can serve as a practical and impactful educational strategy in special-needs settings. This study highlights the value of tailored digital health education tools in promoting better understanding and supporting preventive oral health behaviors in this vulnerable population.

Abstract

Gingivitis is one of the most prevalent oral health problems among pregnant women, primarily triggered by hormonal changes that increase gingival sensitivity to plaque and local irritants. Despite its high occurrence, inadequate knowledge of oral health care among first-trimester pregnant women (K1) remains a significant concern, potentially worsening gingival conditions and overall maternal health. This study aimed to examine the relationship between pregnant women’s knowledge of dental and oral health maintenance and the incidence of gingivitis at the Karanggeneng Community Health Center, Lamongan Regency. This study employed an analytic survey design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 37 first-trimester pregnant women were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire assessing knowledge of oral health care and a clinical examination using the Gingival Index to determine gingivitis status. The relationship between variables was analyzed using Spearman’s rho correlation test. The findings revealed that the majority of respondents had a moderate level of knowledge (54.1%) and experienced moderate gingivitis (62.1%). Statistical analysis demonstrated a significant correlation between knowledge of oral health maintenance and gingivitis status (p = 0.020 < 0.05), indicating that lower levels of knowledge are associated with a higher severity of gingivitis. In conclusion, there is a significant relationship between oral health knowledge and gingivitis among first-trimester pregnant women. Improving knowledge through targeted health education is essential to promote better oral hygiene practices and reduce the risk of gingival inflammation during pregnancy. These findings highlight the importance of integrating oral health education into antenatal care services.

Abstract

Periodontitis remains a major cause of tooth loss among the elderly, significantly affecting masticatory function, aesthetics, and overall quality of life. Despite its high prevalence, limited awareness and misconceptions about oral health among older adults may contribute to delayed prevention and treatment. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the relationship between elderly knowledge of oral health and the incidence of periodontitis at the Kemuning Integrated Health Post, Rejosopinggir Village, Jombang Regency. This research employed an analytic observational design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 32 elderly participants aged ≥60 years were selected using random sampling. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire to assess oral health knowledge and clinical examination using the Russell Periodontal Index to determine periodontal status. Statistical analysis was performed using the chi-square test with a significance level of 0.05. The findings revealed that the majority of respondents had poor knowledge of oral health (78.1%), and most participants exhibited severe periodontal conditions, with an average Russell Periodontal Index score of 3.55. However, the chi-square test indicated no statistically significant relationship between oral health knowledge and the occurrence of periodontitis (p = 0.396 > 0.05). These results suggest that knowledge alone is insufficient to influence periodontal health outcomes. In conclusion, although poor oral health knowledge is prevalent among the elderly, it does not significantly correlate with the incidence of periodontitis in this population. Other factors, such as behavioral habits, access to healthcare services, systemic conditions, and socioeconomic status, may play a more dominant role. Comprehensive and practical oral health interventions are therefore recommended to improve periodontal health among the elderly.
