Abstract

Mental health conditions, including depression, pose a significant public health challenge in Indonesia, impacting quality of life and healthy aging, particularly among vulnerable populations. This study examines the prevalence of depression and mental health issues, identifies associated risk factors, and evaluates disparities in health service utilization using secondary data from the 2023 Indonesian National Health Survey (SKI 2023). Logistic regression analysis was used to explore associations between mental health outcomes and sociodemographic factors, including age, gender, education, employment, and economic status. The analysis revealed significant geographic and demographic disparities. West Java reported the highest depression prevalence (3.3%) and Bali the lowest (0.3%). Women, unemployed individuals, and those in lower socioeconomic groups exhibited higher prevalence rates. Urban residents had greater access to services compared to rural populations, where stigma and resource limitations were prominent barriers. These findings highlight the urgent need for equitable, community-based mental health initiatives that integrate culturally sensitive care, address social determinants, and reduce stigma. Targeted policies and programs are essential to improving mental well-being, enhancing service accessibility, and supporting healthy aging across Indonesia's diverse populations.

Abstract

Stress in adolescents has the potential to impact various aspects of physical and mental health, including perceived academic ability. Differences in gender and nutritional status such as body mass index (BMI) can affect stress levels and academic perception abilities in adolescents. Objective: To assess the relationship between stress and academic perception abilities based on gender and BMI in high school-aged adolescents. Methods: An observational analytical study with a cross-sectional approach was conducted on 53 students aged ≤18 years at SMAN 2 Parepare. Data were collected through an online questionnaire using the Indonesian version of the PSS-10 instrument and the TASES scale. BMI was calculated from weight and height. Data were analyzed using the t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation. Results: There were no significant differences in stress scores or academic perception abilities based on gender and BMI category (p>0.05). There was no significant relationship between stress and academic perception abilities (r=–0.02; p=0.901). Conclusion: Gender and BMI status do not significantly influence stress and academic perception abilities. Other factors such as coping strategies and social support need further investigation.

Abstract

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains one of the leading causes of death in Indonesia, and its prevalence has been increasing among the younger population. Low levels of knowledge and awareness among adolescents regarding the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle for CVD prevention continue to pose challenges in reducing future cardiovascular morbidity. This community service program aimed to enhance awareness among students of SMAN 1 Parepare about active lifestyles and CVD prevention through targeted health education. The program utilized a combination of presentations, poster-based visual education, interactive discussions and Q&A sessions, as well as game-based quizzes to reinforce learning. The implementation resulted in a noticeable improvement in students’ understanding, reflected through their active engagement and correct responses during learning activities. The interactive educational approach was effective in promoting adolescent comprehension of active lifestyle concepts and CVD prevention. These findings suggest that school-based health promotion initiatives can be replicated to strengthen early CVD prevention efforts among Indonesian adolescents.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examined the association between body composition indicators and cardiovascular health score among young adults from an early cardiovascular aging perspective. A cross-sectional analytic study was conducted using de-identified data from 44 young adults, consisting of 35 females and 9 males. Body composition indicators included body mass index, waist circumference, body fat percentage, skeletal muscle percentage, and visceral fat index. Cardiovascular and metabolic markers included systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, and random blood glucose. Cardiovascular health was assessed using a modified Life’s Essential 8-based cardiovascular health score. Spearman correlation and age- and sex-adjusted linear regression analyses were performed. Higher adiposity indicators were significantly associated with lower cardiovascular health score, including body mass index, waist circumference, body fat percentage, and visceral fat index. Visceral fat index showed the strongest inverse association with cardiovascular health score. In contrast, skeletal muscle percentage was positively associated with cardiovascular health score. Adiposity indicators were also associated with less favorable blood pressure profiles, particularly systolic blood pressure. These findings suggest that body composition indicators, especially visceral fat index and skeletal muscle percentage, may provide practical insight into early cardiovascular health variation among young adults.

Abstract

Abstract. Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, obesity, and cardiovascular disease, are major causes of global morbidity and mortality. Risk factors for NCDs often develop gradually and remain undetected during productive age, including among educators who have high levels of activity and workload. Teachers are a strategic group that plays an important role in building a healthy lifestyle culture within the school environment, yet they often receive limited attention in preventive health screening programs. This community service activity aimed to conduct basic health screening among elementary and junior high school teachers at SIT Bina Insan Parepare as an effort to support early detection of NCD risk factors. The activity was carried out through the measurement of blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, random blood glucose levels, and health education on NCD prevention and healthy lifestyle practices. The activity also included brief consultations related to the participants’ examination results and health risk factors. The results showed that some participants had NCD risk factors, including elevated blood pressure, overweight/obesity, increased waist circumference, and random blood glucose levels above the normal range. In addition, participants showed high enthusiasm toward the health screening and education provided. This activity was beneficial in increasing teachers’ awareness of the importance of regular health checks and the adoption of healthy lifestyle behaviors as part of promotive and preventive efforts against non-communicable diseases. Keywords: health screening; non-communicable diseases; teachers; early detection; promotive and preventive; healthy aging
