Abstract

Philosophy of Science is a key component of science teacher education because it helps prospective teachers understand the nature of scientific knowledge, its justification, and its educational value. This descriptive qualitative study analyzed essay responses from 78 pre-service science teachers at Makassar State University who participated in a multiplatform game-based Philosophy of Science course. Four essay questions assessed understanding of ontology, epistemology, axiology, and the integration of these three dimensions within junior secondary science education. Data were examined through qualitative content analysis supported by codebook development, repeated reading, peer review, negative-case analysis, and descriptive quantification. Results indicated strong understanding of ontological concepts (95.0% valid responses) and axiological reasoning (96.3%), while epistemological understanding was less developed (59.6%). Integrating the three philosophical dimensions proved most challenging, with only 53.8% valid responses and 40.5% demonstrating complete synthesis. Students primarily recommended debate-based games (31.3%), reflecting an emphasis on critical thinking. These findings provide a framework for assessing philosophical reasoning through essays in game-based science teacher education.

Abstract

Modul ajar merupakan salah satu perangkat pembelajaran penting dalam implementasi Kurikulum Merdeka yang perlu dipahami oleh calon guru. Namun, masih terdapat mahasiswa calon guru IPA yang belum memahami secara optimal struktur dan komponen modul ajar sesuai karakteristik Kurikulum Merdeka. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan memberikan edukasi kepada calon guru IPA mengenai penyusunan modul ajar dalam implementasi Kurikulum Merdeka. Kegiatan diikuti oleh 32 mahasiswa semester 4 Jurusan Pendidikan IPA FMIPA UNM dan dilaksanakan menggunakan pendekatan partisipatif melalui tiga tahapan utama, yaitu sosialisasi materi, pendampingan dan pengecekan modul ajar, serta diskusi dan tanya jawab. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa peserta memperoleh pemahaman awal mengenai struktur dan penyusunan modul ajar dalam implementasi Kurikulum Merdeka. Selain itu, peserta menunjukkan antusiasme dan keterlibatan aktif selama kegiatan berlangsung. Dengan demikian, kegiatan edukasi ini memberikan kontribusi positif dalam memperkuat pemahaman calon guru IPA terkait penyusunan perangkat pembelajaran sesuai karakteristik Kurikulum Merdeka.

Abstract

Limited laboratory facilities and the low utilization of technology in science learning are among the main challenges in improving students’ conceptual understanding, particularly for abstract topics. One possible solution is the use of a virtual laboratory based on PhET Interactive Simulations. This Community Service Program (PKM) aims to enhance teachers’ understanding and skills in utilizing virtual laboratory-based learning media. The activity was conducted in the form of training for teachers at UPT SPF SMPN 27 Makassar using the Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) method. The implementation consisted of three stages: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. Data were collected through observation, questionnaires, and participant feedback. The results indicate that the training was successfully carried out and received positive responses from participants, with satisfaction levels categorized as very good (above 80%). Furthermore, teachers demonstrated improved understanding and skills in using PhET Simulation as a learning medium, particularly in explaining abstract science concepts. Therefore, this training can serve as an alternative solution to overcome laboratory limitations and support more interactive, visual, and meaningful learning.

Abstract

The community service activity aims to improve teachers skills in designing interactive learning videos using Edpuzzle as an effort to strengthen teachers digital competencies in the era of 21st century learning. The community service method used is Participation Action Research (PAR), which consists of problem identification, planning, implementation, and the stage of collecting data to evaluate the results of the activity. The training was conducted at Rama Sejahtera Junior High School, Makassar City, involving eleven teachers who were selected purposively based on their teaching experience and interest in developing digital learning media. Descriptive quantitative statistical analysis was conducted to measure the improvement in participants' abilities and their feedback on the activity. The results showed an N-Gain value of 0.501, which is in the moderate category, indicated a significant increase int teachers skills in designing interactive learning videos. The average participant feedback score reached 4.5 out of 5 (90%), with the highest aspects being the clarity of the material and the delivery of the resource persons. In addition, 82% of participants also succeeded in producing interactive Edpuzzle-based learning videos that met the eligibility criteria for use in classroom learning. These findings showed that practice-based training is effective in improving teachers technical skills and pedagogical understanding of the use of Edpuzzle as an innovative learning medium. This activity has succeeded in encouraging teachers to be more innovative in designing learning media that is more interactive and relevant to students' needs

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the profile of students' analytical abilities in completing case study assignments on the topics of Global Warming and Carbon Emissions in a Philosophy of Science course. The research employed a quantitative descriptive approach involving 31 students from the Science Education Study Program. Data were collected through the assessment of case study assignments and analyzed based on four aspects: case comprehension, problem analysis, evidence-based argumentation, and communication of results. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including mean scores and achievement categories. The findings revealed that the case comprehension aspect achieved the highest mean score of 90.03 (excellent), followed by problem analysis with a mean score of 80.61 (good), evidence-based argumentation with a mean score of 71.10 (good), and communication of results with a mean score of 60.19 (fair). These findings indicate that students were able to understand issues related to global warming and carbon emissions effectively; however, they still require further support in communicating their analytical findings in a systematic and argumentative manner. Case study-based learning has the potential to serve as an effective strategy for fostering students' critical and reflective thinking skills in Philosophy of Science courses.
