Abstract

Kemampuan bahasa Inggris, khususnya Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), menjadi salah satu kompetensi penting yang perlu dimiliki mahasiswa International Class Program (ICP) dalam mendukung kegiatan akademik berbasis internasional.

Abstract

This community service program aimed to enhance the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of sugarcane farmers around Camming Sugar Factory, Bone Regency, in managing agricultural waste into value-added organic compost. The main problems identified were the farmers’ habitual practice of burning sugarcane residues, which negatively impacts the environment, and their limited technical ability to convert waste into useful products. The training was conducted using a participatory training approach that actively involved the community in all stages, including theoretical instruction, hands-on composting practice, and mentoring in the use of appropriate technology such as a sugarcane leaf chopping machine. The program’s effectiveness was evaluated through pre- and post-tests using a Likert-scale questionnaire to assess improvements in participants’ knowledge, technical skills, and attitudes. The results indicated a significant increase in average scores from the “fair” category (3.0) to “excellent” (4.5), with the highest improvement observed in technical composting skills. This program also contributed to reducing open-burning practices, improving soil fertility, and stimulating the development of micro-enterprises in agricultural waste management. Overall, the activity aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) and Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), by promoting circular, environmentally friendly, and sustainable agricultural systems.

Abstract

Abstract. Organic waste problems that continue to increase require effective and sustainable management solutions. One alternative that can be implemented is the utilization of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae or maggots as bioconversion agents for organic waste. This community service activity aimed to improve community knowledge and skills regarding maggot cultivation based on organic waste as an effort to support sustainable waste management in Takalar Regency. The activity was carried out at PPLH Puntondo involving 19 participants through counseling, interactive discussions, demonstrations, and direct practice of maggot cultivation. The evaluation was conducted using pretests and posttests to measure the improvement of participants’ understanding. The pretest results showed an average score of 53.15, categorized as sufficient, while the posttest results increased to 84.21, categorized as very good. This improvement indicates that participatory training methods are effective in enhancing community knowledge regarding maggot-based organic waste management. In addition, participants gave positive responses to the activity because maggot cultivation was considered easy to apply and provided environmental as well as economic benefits. This activity is expected to encourage active community participation in independent and sustainable organic waste management while also creating opportunities for environmentally. Abstract

Eggshell waste is a type of household organic waste that has not been optimally utilized and has the potential to cause environmental pollution. In fact, eggshells contain very high calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), reaching 90–97%, enabling them to be processed into various environmentally friendly and economically valuable household products. This study aims to comprehensively review the utilization of calcium carbonate from eggshell waste in environmentally friendly household products. The method used was a narrative review with literature searches through the Google Scholar database covering the 2019–2025 period, yielding 20 relevant articles that were systematically analyzed. The results show that eggshells are effectively utilized in agriculture as organic fertilizer to neutralize soil pH, in environmental applications as adsorbents for heavy metals, and in household products such as antibacterial toothpaste, aromatherapy candles, natural abrasive materials, and various aesthetically valuable crafts. The success of this utilization is greatly influenced by processing methods, particle size, calcination temperature, and material purity. In conclusion, eggshell waste has great potential as an alternative raw material supporting the concepts of zero waste, circular economy, and sustainable development. Further research is needed on long-term product stability, industrial-scale cost-benefit analysis, and safety tests for direct human applications.
