Abstract

This study aims to examine how prophetic leadership is constructed and practiced within the socio-cultural dynamics of Islamic boarding schools and to develop an integrative conceptual framework based on empirical evidence. A qualitative research design with an extended ethnographic approach was employed, with data collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis involving leaders, teachers, senior students, and administrative staff, and analyzed using thematic coding. The findings reveal that prophetic leadership is manifested through four interrelated dimensions: spiritual legitimacy, exemplary behavior, transformational negotiation, and cultural reproduction. Spiritual legitimacy is constructed through collective religious validation, while exemplary behavior functions as a medium of moral socialization within the institutional community. In addition, leaders continuously negotiate between traditional religious values and organizational transformation demands. This study proposes an integrative framework in which spirituality is positioned not merely as a moral foundation but as an active instrument of leadership practice. Theoretically, the study contributes to leadership scholarship by offering a context-sensitive model of spiritual leadership, while practically it provides insights for strengthening leadership strategies in faith-based educational institutions.

Abstract

This study analyses how academic supervision is enacted as an instructional leadership practice to improve educational quality in a pesantren-based madrasah, a context that remains underexplored despite its distinctive integration of formal schooling and religious formation. Using a qualitative single-case study design at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Darullughah Wadda'wah (MTs DALWA) Bangil, Pasuruan, data were gathered through in-depth interviews with the principal, the vice-principal, and six teachers, alongside non-participant observation and documentation study, and analysed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña with source and technical triangulation. The findings show that supervision is conducted systematically across three stages, namely participatory planning, dialogic classroom observation and feedback, and evaluation tied directly to teacher professional development, functioning as continuous professional development rather than administrative control. The study's central contribution is the identification of a Spiritual-Instructional Leadership model, in which supervisory legitimacy derives not only from the principal's managerial position but from religious authority embedded in the pesantren. This spiritual legitimacy, expressed through the ethic of mutual learning (mudzakarah), converted initial teacher resistance into collaborative engagement, demonstrating that Western-derived instructional leadership frameworks require contextual reworking in faith-based settings. The study contributes to educational management theory and offers practical guidance for the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag), showing how pesantren-based madrasahs can operationalise academic supervision in ways that respect local religious-cultural norms while meeting national quality standards.

Abstract

This study aims to look into the management of the Arabic language environment (Biah Arabiyah) in Pondok Pesantren Darullughah Wadda’wah (Dalwa), Indonesia, using the Total Quality Management (TQM) theory with the integration of spiritual values. This study sought to explore the role of the management of the organization in the sustainability of the Arabic Language Environment. This current study used a qualitative case study method. Participants of the current study included the pesantren management, the language program management, teachers, and students, as they were the key individuals involved in the implementation of the Arabic Language Environment. Thematic analysis of the data revealed the following findings: The sustainability of the Arabic Language Environment is supported by the following three mechanisms: the planning of the language environment, the embedding of the use of the Arabic Language in the academic and social activities of the pesantren, and the supervision of the institution. In addition, spiritual values embedded in the pesantren culture strengthen students’ intrinsic motivation to maintain the use of Arabic in daily communication. These findings lead to the development of a conceptual framework called the Hybridized Spiritual–TQM Model, which integrates quality management principles with spiritual values to sustain the language learning environment. Keywords: Arabic Language Environment; Spiritual Culture; Total Quality Management.

Abstract

The decline in yellow-book literacy skills at the elementary level is a serious challenge for Islamic boarding schools. This study aims to analyze the strategy of organizing intensive learning to reduce the number of novice students reading the book at the Darullughah Wadda'wah Islamic Boarding School. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this study examines the Ta'lim al-Muta'allim book guidance program in seven classes of fourth-grade elementary school students. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with the Department of Education, and a documentary study of evaluation results. The research findings indicate that the "Triple Supervisor-Small Group" strategy is a key factor in the program's success. By dividing the class into small groups accompanied by three supervisors alternately, the quality control of the guidance becomes more precise. The high intensity of meetings (5x a week) with an effective duration of 45 minutes has been proven to be able to form a reading habit and accelerate mastery of the "Crucial Chapters" of Arabic grammar. Although the success rate has not reached 100% due to differences in individual learning speeds, the evaluation results show significant progress from the category of unable to read independently. Multi-layered supervisory management and routine monthly evaluation meetings are crucial quality assurance instruments. This research highlights the importance of human resource organization and time efficiency in Islamic boarding school curriculum management to accelerate the literacy skills of novice students in classical texts.

Abstract

Background. The research into Islamic boarding school (pesantren) curricula has mainly centred on the process of institutional change, whereas the internal workings of fiqh turath have received scant attention from the perspective of the modern theory of curriculum. It is noteworthy that turath may be regarded as a means for realizing the idea of a vertical curriculum because the point has never been considered theoretically before. Purpose. This study aims to analyze the vertical continuity of fiqh learning in pesantren and to examine the extent to which the structure of classical texts reflects the characteristics of a spiral curriculum. Method. A qualitative longitudinal case study was conducted at Darullughah Wadda’wah Islamic Boarding School. Data were collected through curriculum documents, examination archives, classroom observations across three instructional levels, and semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders. The analysis employed qualitative curriculum mapping and cognitive task analysis based on the revised Bloom’s taxonomy. Results. The findings show that core fiqh themes recur systematically across instructional levels, accompanied by progressive argumentative deepening and increasing cognitive complexity. This pattern reflects an implicit spiral structure embedded in the mukhtashar–syarah textual tradition, indicating a consistent form of vertical alignment without formal curriculum engineering. Conclusion. This paper contributes theoretically to the discussion by reinterpreting the idea of a spiral curriculum through a text-based epistemology, where it is shown that coherence in curricula can result from the inherent structures in classical texts. This theory is used to develop the Turath-Based Spiral Curriculum Model, which seeks to integrate traditional Islamic education with modern curricular theory. Due to the limitations of the single case study design, this theory is not a general theory but rather a theoretical proposition.
