Abstract

This study aims to examine how prophetic leadership is constructed and practiced within the socio-cultural dynamics of Islamic boarding schools and to develop an integrative conceptual framework based on empirical evidence. A qualitative research design with an extended ethnographic approach was employed, with data collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis involving leaders, teachers, senior students, and administrative staff, and analyzed using thematic coding. The findings reveal that prophetic leadership is manifested through four interrelated dimensions: spiritual legitimacy, exemplary behavior, transformational negotiation, and cultural reproduction. Spiritual legitimacy is constructed through collective religious validation, while exemplary behavior functions as a medium of moral socialization within the institutional community. In addition, leaders continuously negotiate between traditional religious values and organizational transformation demands. This study proposes an integrative framework in which spirituality is positioned not merely as a moral foundation but as an active instrument of leadership practice. Theoretically, the study contributes to leadership scholarship by offering a context-sensitive model of spiritual leadership, while practically it provides insights for strengthening leadership strategies in faith-based educational institutions.

Abstract

Abstract

Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) face growing challenges in preserving traditional Islamic values while responding to educational modernization and changing student behavior. This study examines how the Qismu Riayah division at Darullughah Wadda'wah Islamic Boarding School integrates Islamic values with contemporary student behavior management to support holistic student development. A qualitative case study design was employed, with data collected through semi-structured interviews involving 37 informants, non-participant observations, and institutional document analysis. The findings reveal that Qismu Riayah functions not only as a disciplinary unit but also as a structured mentoring and character-development system. Traditional Islamic values, including ikhlas (sincerity), adab (ethics), discipline, and collective responsibility, are embedded in daily mentoring, dormitory supervision, and counseling, while contemporary approaches such as peer mentoring, positive reinforcement, and restorative practices strengthen students' behavioral and emotional development. The study demonstrates that Islamic values and modern student management practices are complementary rather than contradictory. It contributes to Islamic educational management by proposing an integrative model that bridges traditional pesantren values with contemporary student behavior management, providing practical insights for character education in modern Islamic boarding schools.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the transformational leadership mechanisms of principals in building organizational learning in Islamic boarding schools (SMK Pesantren). The study used a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation studies over six months, then analyzed using iterative thematic analysis techniques. The results show that organizational learning is formed through a multi-layered process that begins with moral legitimacy based on religious values, followed by the development of a participatory vision, the creation of a collective reflective space, and systematic individual development. Transformational leadership functions not only as a leadership style but also as a transformation mechanism that integrates institutional values with modern managerial practices. These findings extend the educational leadership literature by demonstrating that the effectiveness of transformational leadership in the context of Islamic boarding schools is strengthened by moral legitimacy and collective culture. This study contributes theoretically through a processual model that explains the relationship between transformational leadership and organizational learning and practically provides a strategic framework for strengthening the organizational capacity of value-based schools.

Abstract

Background. The research into Islamic boarding school (pesantren) curricula has mainly centred on the process of institutional change, whereas the internal workings of fiqh turath have received scant attention from the perspective of the modern theory of curriculum. It is noteworthy that turath may be regarded as a means for realizing the idea of a vertical curriculum because the point has never been considered theoretically before. Purpose. This study aims to analyze the vertical continuity of fiqh learning in pesantren and to examine the extent to which the structure of classical texts reflects the characteristics of a spiral curriculum. Method. A qualitative longitudinal case study was conducted at Darullughah Wadda’wah Islamic Boarding School. Data were collected through curriculum documents, examination archives, classroom observations across three instructional levels, and semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders. The analysis employed qualitative curriculum mapping and cognitive task analysis based on the revised Bloom’s taxonomy. Results. The findings show that core fiqh themes recur systematically across instructional levels, accompanied by progressive argumentative deepening and increasing cognitive complexity. This pattern reflects an implicit spiral structure embedded in the mukhtashar–syarah textual tradition, indicating a consistent form of vertical alignment without formal curriculum engineering. Conclusion. This paper contributes theoretically to the discussion by reinterpreting the idea of a spiral curriculum through a text-based epistemology, where it is shown that coherence in curricula can result from the inherent structures in classical texts. This theory is used to develop the Turath-Based Spiral Curriculum Model, which seeks to integrate traditional Islamic education with modern curricular theory. Due to the limitations of the single case study design, this theory is not a general theory but rather a theoretical proposition.
