Abstract

The transformation of education in Indonesia has become a central issue that continues to be discussed in the realm of national education. The government is trying to present a curriculum that is adaptive and relevant to the needs of the times, one of which is by creating the Merdeka Curriculum. Although the Merdeka Curriculum gives teachers greater authority, there is a lack of comprehensive research on how the conversion from CP to ATP impacts the concept of Merdeka Mengajar. This study aims to analyze the process of formulating CP to ATP with the aim of exploring the meaning of "Merdeka Mengajar" in more depth. Using content analysis, this study examines the Merdeka Curriculum documents, especially the process of converting CP to (ATP) in a case study. The Merdeka Curriculum provides space for educators to be creative in learning, but there needs to be a better mechanism to ensure alignment in achieving learning objectives. The flexibility of the Merdeka Curriculum has the potential to increase the relevance of learning, but also poses challenges in maintaining the quality and uniformity of student learning outcomes. The Merdeka Mengajar concept carried by the Merdeka Curriculum is to provide greater autonomy to teachers to plan and implement learning according to the conditions of students in achieving the CP of the curriculum.

Abstract

The lexicon of a language is a crucial part of its linguistic structure. If students lack a thorough comprehension of vocabulary, their proficiency in English will be adversely affected. However, students should prioritise improving their ability to regulate and use words. This study aimed to determine if there is a distinction in vocabulary proficiency among seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 7 Tarakan when taught using audio textbooks as a learning medium compared to traditional media. The research findings indicate that students who received instruction using audio textbooks had a significant disparity in their vocabulary proficiency compared to those taught using conventional textbooks. Consequently, listening to audiobooks might prove advantageous for students in enhancing their language proficiency. Teachers at SMP Negeri 7 Tarakan and other schools are contemplating using diverse technological media, such as audio textbooks, to aid pupils in acquiring language skills. This is being undertaken in an attempt to build innovative teaching approaches.

Abstract

This study investigated the association between students' enthusiasm to learn and their English academic performance in the eighth grade at SMPN 1 Tarakan during the pandemic. This investigation employed a quantitative methodology based on the correlation method. A stratified random sampling procedure was used to choose the 54 eighth-graders from SMP Negeri 1 Tarakan sample. A learning motivation survey and an examination of the student's English Semester Exam results were used to gather the data. The association between students' motivation for learning and their proficiency in English was examined using Pearson's product-moment correlation. The mean score of 59.50 out of 29.63% on the questionnaire indicated that the eighth graders of SMPN 1 Tarakan were not enthusiastic about learning despite the epidemic. During the pandemic, the English scores of eighth-graders were also low, with a mean score of 57.19, or approximately 66.67%. During the pandemic, students at SMPN 1 Tarakan exhibited a highly significant correlation between their English achievement and their motivation to learn, as indicated by this finding.

Abstract

This community service project at Muhammadiyah Senior and Junior High Schools in Tarakan, North Kalimantan, sought to resolve the issue of low student engagement and English language proficiency within the English Community (EC) program, which had previously employed conventional teaching methods. The primary objective was to improve learning outcomes by incorporating media-assisted instruction. Comprehensive needs assessments, stakeholder engagement, and collaborative planning with school principals, EC coordinators, and teachers comprised the project. Educators were instructed on the effective utilization of multimedia resources. Iterative feedback and continuous improvement were incorporated into the implementation. The findings indicated a 20% enhancement in students' English proficiency and a 25% increase in motivation and engagement. These results emphasize the significance of continuous evaluation, student involvement, capacity building, needs-based customization, and collaborative design in educational interventions, which result in substantial enhancements in language learning and overall student participation.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the significance of effects of mind mapping on student’s writing abilities. This study employed a quasi-experimental design. The research sample consists of two classes selected through purposive sampling techniques. Data was collected using writing tests administered during pretest and posttest to measure students’ writing abilities. The results indicated that the mean difference in the control class is higher than that in the experimental class. This is because the use of mind mapping is most effective when used with actively participating students. In contrast, in this study, students in the experimental class were less active during the learning process. On the other hand, in the control class, students actively played online an online game called Roblox. The Roblox game helped students expand their English vocabulary, which potentially aided their writing. From this study, it can be concluded that mind mapping is still effective in helping students improve their writing skills, although it was not maximized in this context. The results would be more significant if the students were actively engaged in the learning process.

Abstract

Kata Kunci: Kurikulum Merdeka; Pengembangan Profesional; Guru Daerah Perbatasan; Pengabdian Masyarakat ABSTRACT Geographical isolation and limited digital infrastructure pose significant challenges in ensuring equitable access to teacher professional development, particularly in border regions such as Sebuku District and Nunukan Regency. Teachers in these areas face difficulties participating in continuous training on the Merdeka Curriculum due to high transportation costs and weak internet connectivity. This community service program aimed to enhance teachers' capacity to implement the Merdeka Curriculum through an intensive, participatory, and context-based workshop. The program was conducted over four days (October 31 to November 3, 2023) at SDN 01 Sebuku and involved 60 elementary school teachers from 10 partner schools. The implementation method included core material delivery (CP, ATP, and P5), group discussions, instructional material development simulations, group presentations, and direct feedback sessions. Results indicated that 80% of participants demonstrated an adequate understanding of developing ATPs, teaching modules, and P5-based materials. However, minor support is still needed in adapting instructional steps and designing comprehensive character development activities. Positive responses from the local Education Office and partner school principals affirmed the relevance and effectiveness of this initiative. The training strengthened teachers' practical competencies and highlighted the importance of multisectoral collaboration in bridging the educational access gap in remote and underserved regions. Keywords: Merdeka Curriculum; Border Area Teachers; Professional Development; Community Service

Abstract

Learner autonomy is a critical outcome in EFL education, yet the mechanisms through which instructional frameworks and educator behavior influence autonomous learning remain underexplored. This study investigates the impact of the New Learning Guidelines, a structured pedagogical framework, on the development of learner autonomy among undergraduate EFL students. Employing an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, the study involved 539 students categorized into positive (n = 78) and negative (n = 462) attitudinal groups. The quantitative data were collected through structured questionnaires, and qualitative data were collected via semi-structured interviews. Quantitative findings revealed that students with positive attitudes demonstrated substantial gains in goal setting, strategic planning, and self-monitoring, whereas those with negative attitudes showed limited improvement from structure alone. Thematic analysis underscored the role of relational scaffolding, emotionally responsive, supportive teacher-student interactions as a critical factor in fostering autonomy among disengaged learners. These findings challenge deficit-based perspective on learner motivation and advance autonomy theory by emphasizing its socio-relational dimension. The study suggests EFL educators may integrate clear instructional guidelines with affective and relational pedagogies to address diverse learner dispositions. Practically, the findings underscore the need for teacher training programs to integrate relational strategies with structural management to promote learner autonomy effectively.
